Greetings. I'm looking for a little advice about an Eberron character. I generally play characters at odds with themselves for one reason or another. Since this will be a PBEM, having a character with a lot of internal conflict is a good thing. :D In the past I've played a Psionic Shifter and a Changeling Hexblade (not the most optimized of character builds, I know).

Anyhow, this time I want to play a brick - a real tough battle focused character (preferably very effective as well :D ) - but I'm at a loss as to what sort of race/multiclass options will give me that internal conflict that will give me enough meat to write about. I've considered some sort of large race with a level in artificer and the rest in barbarian/hulking hurler who fancies himself an inventor/sophisticate but I'm open to any/all suggestions.

The character will be 7th level and part of a mercenary group. The other characters so far are a Phantom Knight, a Druid, and either some sort of Sorcerer OR a Bard/Rogue (hasn't decided yet). As you can see, we are kinda magic heavy as it is. I'm not big on having to pick spells each morning so I'd prefer if you suggest a magic user something with a set list.

My DM is pretty flexible and allows about any book. He's also big on designing your own specialized magical weapons/armor/devices.
Thanks in advance.

Warforged is an intriguing race to play (in my opinion) and is always great for self-reflection. An Artificer is quite capable at tanking, when built properly as well.

Alright, here's something with a bit of angsty flavor:

To be a War Hulk, as I recall, you have to be size Large. Qualify for this by being an artificer or somesuch and drinking a self-made potion of enlarge. Take levels of War Hulk when under the effects of the potion, because you qualify at that time. However, when the potion's effects wear off, you no longer qualify for War Hulk, and lose the class abilities -- bonus strength and the penalty that you can't use your int-based skills.

In normal life, you're a humble artificer with a bit more hit points than might be expected. In combat, after a quick drink, you're a 12-foot-tall, obscenely strong madman.

Name him Dr. J'kull, or something. :D

Tom, how about something from the Tome of Battle? Maybe a lizardfolk warblade from Q'barra or something like that.

The other idea I might suggest is a Binder/Knight of the Sacred Seal (from Tome of Magic). That has plenty of room for bargaining with nebulous otherworldly powers.

warforged ranger - the unnatural naturalist

I was originally going to say druid, but too many spells and your party already has one.

How bout a shifter paladin of the silver flame?

part of an order that so wrongly killed many of his own kind in the name of good.

Im playing an overly intelligent goatfolk tank in a campaign. Its a blast. You can see the build stub in my signature. He is more or less becomming a tracker gish ... great fun playing him! The idea can easily be done with alot of other classes, Warblade as mentioned before included, a Warblade / Wizard / Jade Phoenix mage would be largely the same. Maybe even add Barbarian for rage and Ragemage. Could be fun.

I once played a brute samurai in a Lot5R campaign, it was great fun, it Rokugan you almost have to be able to perform a Tea Ceremony, and Origami scores extra points aswell. Very fun for a 7 foot Crab berserker to sit down perform a tea ceremony flawless. This character can easily be made in DND aswell.

warforged ranger - the unnatural naturalist

Thats what I would have said, or some form of undead druid. The unnatural naturalist has a nice internal dilema to work out.
