I have seen and heard quite a bit about Warlocks. I am starting in a new campaign, and was hoping to possibly create a warlock character, as I have never played one.

Starting out I have 70 points to distribute between the stats, and starting gold for a 7th level character. Any wizards source books are allowed.

I was hoping I could get some character builds to choose from that maximize the warlocks abilities at 7th level. Including which Invocations, Feats, skills and such. Again I have never played a warlock so need help in building a great one.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest starting here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=393586

In general though you should pick a focus like specializing in your blast, pumping up UMD, or being an invocation monkey. Find what the class can do that you like and work on that.

I personally like the UMD focus myself but that's largely because it's much better at higher levels to be a UMD warlock than a blaster-lock. However at 7th level the blast is at about the height of it's power and effectiveness in combat.

Suggested builds:

Warlock 7
Warlock 6 / Mindbender 1
Rogue 1 / Warlock 5 / Daggerspell Mage 1

Blaster focus feats:
Point Blank Shot & Precise Shot
Meta-SLA feats (Empower, Quicken, etc.)
Ability Focus (Eldritch Blast)
Spell Penetration

UMD focus feats:
Magical Aptitue
Skill Focus (UMD)
Craft xxx (Scroll, Staff, Wonderous Item, & Contingent Spell are probably the best)

Note that some of these feats will only work at the higher levels (Quicken SLA, Craft Contingent Spell, etc.)

Also a lot of folks suggest a final build of Warlock 12 / Chameleon 2 / x 6 (more levels of Warlock or a good PrC). This nets you Imbue Item to make stuff and the floating Chameleon feat which can be used to gain extra invocations, craft items, or other stuff as needed....

Where is chameleon? I am not familiar with that either. From what i am seeing you suggest building a warlock who creates items and relies on his or her use magic device skill? What about Invocations and such? Which are best at low level like 7. I woudl like the character to be good at manipulating others, and able to hold their own in a fight, or perhaps change shape to get away from a fight. I am not looking for a melee monger build. Being able to deal some damage however is nice.

if you're willing to spend a couple levels on Cancer Mage, your happy tumor familiar can use your E. blasts for you once in a while, freeing you up to pursue other activities.

The thread I linked too goes invocation by invocation discussing their pros & cons. Personaly I like one inovcation to avoid melee (Spiderwalk or Fell Flight or maybe Flee the Scene). I like Eldritch Spear to be able to attack from further away. I like Entropic Shield & Baleful Utterance as utility defense and offense. See the Unseen is worth it's weight in gold. Voracious Dispelling is *super* useful ... who wouldn't want to be able to dispel all day long?

The Chameleon was in Races of Destiny. However there is a preview of it on the main site that has the full scoop. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041210b&page=1

Also forgot to mention the Supernatural Transformation feat from Savage Species. If allowed the feat turns your eldritch blast from an invocation SLA into a true Supernatural Ability that bypasses SR and does not require a somatic component. Rich Baker suggested that he didn't think that it was legal but didn't think that it would be unbalancing ... I personally disagree. It's incredibly powerful if allowed and negates some of the main weaknesses of the Eldrich Blast.

I also suggest reading the Errata to the Complete Arcane. They made some changes to the blast rules there....

Look into Ruathar as a possible PrC. Full spellcasting, not hard to get into, cool bonuses.

More skill points as well.

if your going for a blaster warlock try going for mortal bane. it adds 2d6 to your eldritch blast 5/ day. (can be quite a bit at lower levels but not so much at higher levels. ) I believe its on BoVD but I dont have my books with me to be sure.
