I'm making a wizard for a tournament, 8 lvl, and between my options, is to polymorph self... wich creature is good for 8hd or less? i'm looking for:
A "heavy-hitter", with good combat capabilities, and a good Grappler.

Edit: oh, and something with scent/blindsight

shambling mound is nice and has immunity to critical hits as its a plant. but no blindsense or scent.

another really clasic option would be the troll. only 6 HD but great scores and has scent.

Core books only, by the way... Monster manual and nothing else :p

thanks for those two. I was wondering: wich scores from the troll do I gain?
Shambling Mound is great btw, thx!

One of the hags is not a bad choice either, forgot which is 7 HD though.

Yep, the Annis... do you gain the DR and the SR? (and darkvision)

Treant. Making you immune to mind-affecting abilities is nice. :D

The annis hag is probably the best form to polymorph into at your level. The treant is nice too, but the annis lets you use all of your equipment as well.

You do get the DR, SR and darkvision because they are all (Ex) abilities. Whether DR is (Ex) or (Su) is cleared up in the FAQ. DR X/bludgeoning happens to be (Ex), so you are in luck. Here is the relevant text:Damage Reduction
Unless otherwise stated by the monster’s description, use these
definitions to determine whether damage reduction components
are extraordinary or supernatural.
Extraordinary
• DR #/slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning
• DR #/adamantine
• DR #/—
Supernatural
• DR #/silver or cold iron
• DR #/magic
• DR #/chaotic, evil, good, or lawful

you do not get DR and SR. in fact you dont get any EX abilities unless you have 7 levels in MoMF or 8 levels in MT. the following ins from the SRD on the spell polymorph

It also gains all extraordinary special attacks possessed by the form but does not gain the extraordinary special qualities possessed by the new form or any supernatural or spell-like abilities.

it does gain EX special attacks though which is nice. I had thought you gained specal senses but as polymorph is based off of alter self you actually dont. the following is from the SRD on alterself

You do not gain any extraordinary special attacks or special qualities not noted above under physical qualities, such as darkvision, low-light vision, blindsense, blindsight, fast healing, regeneration, scent, and so forth.

I believe there's a druid spell that would grant you EX senses of a form you change into but I dont remember anything about it. snow savant suggested it in some post a LONG time ago and I dont feel like digging. If the spell works like I think it does you could yoink it from the druid class list with extra spell.

:embarrass Whoops. Forgot it was only (Ex) special attacks, not special qualities. Doh!

Would a hydra work? You wouldn't get the fast healing, but they have 8 attacks or something at 8 hd.

I second the hydra, eight hungry heads of pain is a nasty suprise for any opponent. There is the downside of not being able to use any of your equipment however...

The Hydra seems good, but how does the attack bonus calculation go?
+4 (bab) + 4 (str) = +8
That's the attack bonus?
And the damage?
