im about to start a new character lvl 8 either a ranger or maybe monk and plan on having him be a shifter or lycanthrope overall which do you think is the better choice? also maybe throw in a couple of suggestions for him to be effective(core books and complete warrior only) please

Though Lycanthropes are fun/powerful, I vote Shifter. ESPECIALLY if you go Ranger. If you can get ahold of Races of Eberron, the shifter racial substitutions are just too nice to pass up. I mean, +0 LA is better any day(except in reference to gestalt and pixies)

You get pushed into a corner a bit as a shifter, the weretouched master is simply too good to pass up. To shift you need shifter feats, and the bonus shifter feats really help. Although some consider it too weak I think even the erratad weretouched master is still a good deal, pounce + claws + 2 strength + 2 shifter bonus feats for 4 levels is not a bad trade.

Weretouched master tiger gives you pounce in a humanoid form, lycanthropes only get their special attacks in animal form. If you really want extra strength you can go bearwarrior afterwards. Sure, you don't have the all day round strength or DR of the lycanthrope ... but you don't have LA either.

Monk works nicely with natural weapons (just use kicks for unarmed strikes, and use all your natural weapons as secondary). Only problem is meeting the prereqs, you have the choice between ranger or scout there.

So you can go monk 4/ranger 1/weretouched master or monk 4/scout 2/weretouched master (uncanny dodge is always nice).

Or the munchkin route ... monk 2/barbarian 2/ranger 1/weretouched master (shifter savagery from RoE is very nice).

Flying kick works nicely with pounce + unarmed strikes + natural weapons ... 1d12 extra damage on every attack.
