so, i made this 50th-level character for fun and i've got his critical threat range up to 3-20 with a slashing weapon (which, of course, easily translates into vorpal weapon). The weapon is bladed gauntlets, found in S&F, with a natural threat range of 17-20. 4 numbers. Improved Critical makes it 8. There's a PrC in the BoVD called Disciple of Dispater that triples a weapon's threat range if it is made of metal or something (which doesn't stack with keen). 16 numbers. Then, the Weapon Master PrC in S&F has an ability called Ki critical which, if you already have improved crit with the weapon, adds 2 numbers to the threat range. 18 numbers. and i added 10 levels of dervish from complete warrior because it was funny.

so, the question is, i want a 2-20 (or 1-20, just for kicks) threat range. any other suggestions that could get me that last little bit?

The errata changed the critical threat range for bladed gauntlets to 19-20.

The Disciple of Dispater is 3.0, and in 3.0 keen and improved crit stacked, now in 3.5 they don't, so I would update the Iron Power ability to 3.5 and not allow it to stack.

So you have 19-20 plus imp crit OR Iron Power resulting in 17-20. The 2 from weapon master would stack with the imp crit feat (but not iron power), so you get 15-20. Still not bad - a 30% chance per swing of threatening a critical.

First, making a level 50 character that seems amazingly powerful is just wasted time. Of course they're powerful... they're level 50.
Next, check the S&F errata, Bladed Gauntlet only has a threat range of 19-20. So you're 50th level guy only has a threat range of 10-20, or 6-20 with a scimitar. Finally, you're just as well of as a fighter half your level against Constructs, Undead, Oozes, etc.

So the answer to your question is; don't try for threat range, you're better off going for damage.

to be fair, it wasn't to play a game with, it was just for kicks. second: oh. didn't know about the errata. meh, whatev.

also remember you have to actually hit to threaten; 3-20 threat range (actually less, see above posts, but aside from that) is cute, but if you hit something only on a 12 or higher (or whatever), anything below that will miss anyway and the threat range is wasted.

well, see, that was exactly the point: to be cute. again, i wasn't actually going to play with this character.

the crit-range does not apply to vorpal.

SRD:
Upon a roll of natural 20 (followed by a successful roll to confirm the critical hit), the weapon severs the opponent’s head (if it has one) from its body

Until this day I still do not think my former DM realizes this. He always saw a huge crit range as insane, but I could never convince him that you had to HIT a creature for the crit to come into effect (assuming you were in the range of the crit)...

If you're going to use un-errata'd items, just use the Ninja-To from one of the early OA printings: 29 - 20 threat range.

I guess you're roll attacks with a d30?
