Starting a Dragon Disciple in a level 10 game.

A friend wishes to develop a Dragon Disciple in a game I am playing. We are playing 3.0 but the DM allows any book and a class that is only represented in 3.5 is OK.

He is allowed to start at level 10. The key is a base class that cast arcane spells without preparation? He would need to go at least 5 levels into it to gain the required Knowledge Arkana 8.

If you can let me know the book it is in, I will know which friend to mug for the book. :D

Any sugestions on a mix of classes that lead up to Dragon Disciple would also be apreciated.

Thanks all :)

You don't need five levels in the arcane class, you can multiclass and space out the levels to get the required skill points.

You can probably find a bunch of D.Disciple builds if you poke around, but here's a couple ideas.

1. Hexblade4/X1: (CW) Full BAB, Good saves, Mettle complements your best saves as DD.
2. DuskbladeX: (PHBII) Full bab, lots of spell slots
3. Bard4 or Bard8: Good saves/skills/boosts, 2nd/3rd level spells.

How about Monk 2/Fighter 2/Duskblade 1/Dragon Disciple X? You could try to make some sort of uber-grappler.

On second thought, I think I'd probably just stick with Duskblade 5/Dragon Disciple X. ;)

Before starting Dragon Disciple, you have to ask yourself if you still want relevant casting or not. Starting DD as soon as possible usually makes your casting an afterthough as you only really use it for prereqs and the occasional true strike. If you start DD by ecl 11, you can have a pretty decent spell selection to make you a semi-gish as you ascend to dragonhood. Starting even later than that means you don't get the final benefits of DD (which are arguably non-optimal), but you get to apply all those extra slots to your high level spells.

Half-Elf Hexblade 1/H-elf Paragon 3 (UA)/Human Paragon 3 (UA)/DD 10/1/2 Dragon Paragon 3. :D But, I'm biased.

Uh, why half-elf?

To get Half-Elf Paragon's and Human Paragon's generic stat bump, I would imagine.

Exactly, PI. Divided Ancestry is the key, allowing both stat-bumps to go where ever you need them. Depending on your needs, the Half-Elf Bard might be a better intro for the Substitution level, but you're practically wedded to Extra Music as a Feat at that point.

Oh, whoops. Missed the Human Paragon in there.

What you get from the following entry classes:
Bard 2 or 4 / Whatever 3 or 1:
Pro:
Cure spells, light armored casting, 3/4 BAB
Con:
bad weapon proficiencies(likely covered with another class)

Cleric 9 / whatever arcane 1:
Pro:
3/4 BAB LOTS of Divine lv5-slots
(Dragon desciple didn't specify the bonus slot have to be arcane, Righteous Might works even if you finish the PrC and become a half-dragon, Divine Power takes care of BAB)
Con:
Late entry to the class, bad weapon proficiencies (Unless maybe war domain)

Warmage(CA)1 / Whatever 4:
Pro:
Armored mage, True Strike at 1st level, not worth getting more if you're just dipping in.
Con:
bad weapon proficiencies(likely covered with another class)

Beguiler 1 or 4(PHBII)/ Whatever 1:
Pro:
Armored mage, trapfinding, lots of skills at lv1
Nice lv1 spells include: Silent Image, Expeditius Retreat, Obscuring Mist, Comprehend Language
Nice lv2 spells include: Glitterdust, Invisibility, Knock, Minor Image, Mirror Image, See Invisibility, Silence, Spider Climb
Con:
Not much use with suprise casting, cloaked casting and the first advanced learning.
1/2 BAB, bad weapon proficiencies(likely covered with another class at lv5)

I think the others have been covered already

cleric9/duskblade1 has all martial weapons and would be a nice entry I think
