Scandal 10-04-04, 12:59 PM	Okay in the following build I am trying to figure out the caster level for Arcane, Divine, And Necromancy just to make sure I understand how the True necromancer and the Ur-priest work.. The Build: Human Monk 1/ Necromancer 5/ Ur-priest 2/ Mystic Theurge 2/ True necromancer 2/ Mystic Theurge 8 feats are: (Cosmopolitan Bluff + Flaw) Cosmo from FRCS 1 - Iron Will 1 - Practiced Spell caster wizard 3 - Arcane Disciple (the feat from complete divien that grants access to a domain) 6 - Spell focus Evil 6 - Empower spell 9 - Extend spell 12 - Persistant spell 15 - Craft staff 18 - Maximize spell Okay so the caster levels Arcane = 20 (practiced spell caster + 5 levels Wizard + 10 levels MT + 2 levels TN) Divine = 22?? (UrP 2 + 10 levels of MT + 1/2 Arcane caster level??) Necromancy = 42?? (Arcane + Divine Caster levels??) I am not sure If I am right or not if someone could correct me that would be great and I know that this has type of build comes up a lot.. Feel free to coment on the above build.. Kadance 10-04-04, 02:58 PM	Since no one else has replied, Ur-priest caster level uses 1/2 of the other casting classes levels, not caster levels. In your build, this is 2 (wizard 5/2 = 2.5, round down)
Scandal 10-04-04, 03:33 PM	To determine the caster level of an Ur-Priest, add the character's ur-priest levels to one-half of his caster levels in other spellcasting classes. I thought it read more like that wich would mean add the caster level of other spell casting classes.. well the caster level of my arcane class would be 20 wouldn't it?? -Scan

Engilbrand 10-05-04, 02:37 PM	One problem is going between editions. Something tells me that the stuff from 3.0 didn't take the Mystic Theurge into account, which is why this stuff just gets goofy. The True Necromancer will be updated in Libris Mortis. I didn't see the part for Ur-Priest and half caster level in Complete Divine. Maybe I just missed it. My recommendation: Don't try this. Not until Libris Mortis comes out.
Xaos of the Mind 10-06-04, 12:01 AM	I actually made a similar build recently, albeit not using Ur-Priest, because I don't think i'll have access to any to train me in the campaign I'm joining. The words "to one-half of his levels in other spellcasting classes" say to me that you would get: Arcane: 5 Wizard + 10 Mystic Theurge + 2 True Necromancer +3 Practiced Spellcaster = 20 Divine: 2 Ur-Priest + 10 Mystic Theurge + 2 (5/2 rounded down) from Wizard (because True Necromancer and Mystic Theurge do not have their own spellcasting progressions and spell lists, they are not *specifically* spell-casting classes, they are reliant upon other classes for spell-casting ability) = 14 So, unless someone comes up with a ruling somewhere stating that any class that gets "+1 level of existing (arcane/divine spellcasting class)" is, by definition, its own spellcasting class... I would say no... Though I think Snow Savant seems to believe differently, given the thread mentioning some 80+ caster level or some such chicanery...
Sang-Drax 10-06-04, 09:02 AM	You're missing something important in there, guys... you must have access to the Death domain to qualify for true Necromancer. It was possible in 3.0, when Master Of Shrouds granted 3 domains at once, but not anymore - it's been nerfed in the Complete Divine web enhancement. On the other hand, I don't really see much of a problem in being able to cast 9th level cleric and wizard spells, with access to Divine Metamagic and stuff. Ur-Priest as it is is rather broken; there's no need for a True Necromancer.
Xaos of the Mind 10-06-04, 09:28 AM	You're right, I did forget about the Death domain requirement. My own build uses a Cleric of Nerull, so the domain problem doesn't exist for me. I did not notice it here, though. So you'd need to add a level of Contemplative to get access to Death. Couldn't do that until level 11, though, and you'd need at least one level of Ur-Priest at that time.
Sang-Drax 10-06-04, 09:38 AM	Problem is, even that way it would not be possible. Ur-Priest necessarily must give up all your divine spellcasting abilities - by that it means the domains, too. As for the Contemplative, the very nature of the PrC is someone who becomes in touch with your god. An Ur-Priest has no god at all. And it's even in the class requirements - "you must have had contact with your god or with his cohort" or something like that. But, if you have no god, it can't be done. Unless there's another way to have access to the Death domain, but I know of none.

Says to me you don't need to worship any deity, you simply need to contact a being that embodies your alignment-based philosophy. Gods are cut out of the equation.
