| edwardsobel02-19-05, 05:02 PM | Books allowed: PHB (3.5), DMG (3.5), Complete Warrior/Divine/Arcane/Adeventurer. NO OTHERS 40 point buy for stats. 13th level max. 110,000 gp spellcasters limited to 12th level plus 12000 xp for item creation. looking at a half-orc archer build any suggestions please. |
| Timespike02-19-05, 05:41 PM | I'd personally say go with thrown weapons instead of a bow. If you take brutal throw & power throw you'll lessen your MAD and do more damage to boot. Barbarian 1/Fighter 8/Master Thrower 5/Tempest 5/x1 would make for a nasty strength-based axechucker, but to make it work you need to take Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Brutal throw, Power Attack, Power Throw, and Weapon Focus (probably Throwing axe) |
| ninjapirate_602-19-05, 07:14 PM | Human Fighter 20 get gloves of dex+6 and a +5 weapon(maybe with special abilities), max out your dex and str. 1. Rapid Shot, Point Blank Shot, Manyshot 2. Improved Rapid Shot 3. Precise Shot 4. Far Shot 5. 6. WF(comp. longbow), WS(comp. longbow) 7. 8. GWF(comp. longbow) 9. Improved Rapid Shot 10. Sharp-Shooting 11. 12. GWS(comp. longbow), Greater Manyshot fill in the rest however you want, it doesnt have to be fighter(maybe ootbi). But when you see this guy in action, you'll go :OMG! seriously, he took out a purple worm by himself at lv. 1 ( the rest of the party WAS being swallowed, and in the black bear animal companions case, eaten, but still...) |
| edwardsobel02-22-05, 11:51 AM | bump up thanks for the input any more? BTW I did say max level 13 averything above that will not be usable!!!! |
| PhaedrusXY02-22-05, 03:10 PM | BTW I did say max level 13 averything above that will not be usable!!!!In general, most builds on here are posted with 20 levels. Even if you're starting at a lower level, and think you will probably never play to the higher levels, it's still a good idea to plan ahead. There are alot of archer builds floating around here. I'd take a look at ksbsnowowl's archer thread (http://www.wizards.com/leaving.asp?url=http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=183604), and do a search for cleric archer. I'd recommend the cleric archer myself, especially since you're starting out at a higher level. They only get better with more levels. Does it have to be a half-orc? Personally, I think I'd rather have a ranger instead of a fighter. You get more out of combat options, and can be nearly as good of an archer (or maybe as good, depending on your spell use). |
| edwardsobel02-22-05, 11:06 PM | I already looked at most of them and all make use of books not allowed in the game. NO FR stuff allowed no races of series stuff allowed also no old 3.0 books either. that is why I posted here a new thread. BTW not every build is 20th level. I have asked for help on this board twice and got the same answer. a build that doesn't match what i asked for or a quick go see another thread (that I already looked at and could not use). the last time I asked for a drow wizard and got a quick level breakdown and nothing else. a basic "use this and go away" |
| PhaedrusXY02-23-05, 12:24 AM | BTW not every build is 20th level. I have asked for help on this board twice and got the same answer. a build that doesn't match what i asked for or a quick go see another thread (that I already looked at and could not use).Well man, I don't own any of the Complete series, and so couldn't make you a build utilizing anything from them. Also, realize that the people posting on this board aren't here just to be your personal servants and crank out builds for anyone who posts here. They are mainly bored people that like fiddling with the rules to come up with crazy stuff. New things that haven't been done before, or crazy concepts will generate alot more interest than things that have been done over and over again. There have been alot of archer builds made on here. You might not be able to use everything in those other archer threads, but you can certainly use some of it. You'll get more help if you try to come up with a build on your own, and then post it and ask people to help you tweak it to get the most out of it. Some nice (or really bored) people will go around making up builds for people for scratch on request, but not all. So I'd suggest trying to put a build together on your own, and posting it and asking for advice on how to improve it. It's better to learn how to optimize yourself than just let other people to do it for you, anyway. (You know that old proverb about teaching a man to fish, right? ;) ) This stuff is discussed in the FAQ, also. |

| PhaedrusXY02-23-05, 06:24 AM | I'd personally say go with thrown weapons instead of a bow. If you take brutal throw & power throw you'll lessen your MAD and do more damage to boot.I don't like Thrown Weapon builds because it isn't really feasible to be able to afford all the magic weapons you'll need to make multiple rounds of full attacks with. You can get the Returning enhancement, or some kind of bracer that enchants normal weapons, but either of these relies on DM interpretation to work. Just using crystalkeep.com, here is a ranger build possibly using material from Complete Warrior: Ranger11/Barbarian2 1 Point Blank Shot 2 Rapid Shot (bonus) 3 Precise Shot 6 Manyshot (bonus), Improved Rapid Shot 9 * 11 Improved Precise Shot 12 Far Shot* *For the 9th level feat, and/or to replace Far Shot: Good candidates would be Ranged Disarm/Pin/Sunder, or Sharp Shooting. Or you could go with Dodge, Mobility, and Shot on the Run (swap one with Imp. Rapid Shot). A good feat if you expect to be able to use a mount alot is Mounted Archery. If you plan on fighting from a mount, I'd pick a warhorse as your animal companion. A 40 point buy is really hefty. You'll want good Dex and Con, and decent Wis and Strength. A decent Int should be possible for skill points, too. Maybe something like: score (point cost) Str 16 (6) Con 14 (6) Dex 18 (16) Int 12 (6) Wis 14 (6) Cha 6 (includes half-orc racial modifiers) I'm not going to go through and pick out gear, heh. Just remember, alot of different cheap magic items usually is a better value than a few expensive ones. So figure out the best combo of +1 or +2 Amulets, Rings, Armor, etc for your money. (Or maybe +3) Go ahead and splurge on a decent bow. If you expect to fight mostly evil stuff (typical game), definitely get Holy on it. As usual, special abilities are usually better than a higher enhancement bonus. |
| ksbsnowowl02-23-05, 01:05 PM | I already looked at most of them and all make use of books not allowed in the game. But not all the content in them is such. Ehem,Well, I’ve finally broken and succumb to the requests to add fully-3.5-compatible Archer builds. My summer gaming group does play 3.5, and I took a look at my group members’ books this afternoon. Here is what I’ve come up with; however, this is largely from memory, so if there are a few minor errors I apologize now, and ask that you point out any errors so I may fix them. Note, you need to worship a deity with a favored weapon of Longbow or Composite Longbow. Human Level Class Feats Class Abilities 1 Ranger PBShot, Precise Shot Fav En (?), Track*, Wild Empathy 2 Ranger Rapid Shot* Combat Style 3 Fighter Far Shot, WF BF 4 Fighter Imp. Init. BF 5 Ranger Endurance* 6 OotBI True Believer Precision Shot +1d8 7 OotBI Close Combat Shot 8 Pious Temp Mettle 9 Pious Temp Manyshot Smite 1/Day 10 Pious Temp Weap Spec WS, DR 1/- 11 Pious Temp Imp Prec Shot BF 12 OotBI Imp Crit Precision Shot +2d8 13 OotBI Grt Weap Foc* Greater WF 14 Pious Temp 15 Pious Temp ? Smite 2/Day 16 Pious Temp DR 2/- 17 Pious Temp ? BF 18 ? ? Those last three feats could be filled with Dodge, Mobility, and Shot on the Run, or some of the ranged feats from Complete Warrior (Ranged-Disarm, -Pin, -Sunder, etc). Also, remember that Pious Templar casts spells from either the Paladin or Black Guard spell lists. I am unsure what would make a good end to this build. You could continue in OotBI, but it doesn’t get anything great in the next few levels. You could take a couple more levels of Ranger to get actual spellcasting ability, or even insert 3 Ranger levels starting at level 8, so as to get Manyshot for free, and thus opening up another feat slot. You could add one level of Ranger and two of Fighter, gaining another Fighter Bonus Feat. You could add levels of Dragonslayer from the Draconomicon, improving your Pious Templar spell casting along the way; or take three levels of Dragonstalker from the same book, gaining the ability to ignore Natural Armor once per day. Now, you may wonder why I chose to go with the 3.5 version of OotBI to gain Close Combat Shot, rather than taking a level of Exotic Weapon Master and using a greatbow. Well, I have a feeling that you will have a hard time finding a god with a greatbow as his favored weapon. I know some FR gods do have bows as favored weapons, and IIRC, Ehlonna now has the longbow as a favored weapon in 3.5, correct? |
| edwardsobel02-23-05, 01:47 PM | I stand correceted and humbled Sorry to all I must have missed that entry where is my head! |
| ksbsnowowl02-23-05, 04:59 PM | That's alright...it is near the bottom. I had to run earlier, so now I'll add a few notes. Given the insanely powerful new Ranger archery spells in Complete Adventurer, it may be well worth your while to gain at least one more ranger level. I would either insert one level of Ranger at level 12, or insert 3 levels of ranger, drop the Manyshot feat (since you'd get it for free from ranger 6), and progress thusly: Ranger 1-2/Fighter .......Drat! nevermind, what I was thinking would give you XP penalties. You would have to add a level of fighter before you would want to add another level of ranger, so you might as well add two levels of fighter and get the bonus feat. At 13th level you could look like this: Ranger 4/Fighter 4/OotBI 2/PTemp 3 Not too shabby, you'd have first level ranger and paladin spells (maybe 2nd level paladin spells - can't recall). Anyhow, life is busy and I've got to run; I'll offer more advise later if I can. |
