A cleric getting ranger spells? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-29-05, 07:41 PM Well, I just picked up the spell compendium, and flipped over to Hunter's Mercy. Seems like a pretty good spell, might encourage some people to play ranger archers instead of clerics. But then I started thinking what kind of crazy crap it would be if you were a cleric and could get your hand on the spell. And so, I come to you guys with a humble request: Find me a way to get 1st-level ranger spells losing the LEAST amount of cleric spellcasting you can. I would contribute, but frankly I see no other way than taking four levels of ranger. I'd prefer not to take that much of a hit to casting, but if that's the only way, well then I guess i'm stuck with my next character being Cleric/ranger hybrid. Well, thanks for your help in advance. :)

12-29-05, 07:45 PM A Cleric with the right domains can get into Prestige Ranger - that SHOULD grant access to every Ranger-unique spell.

12-29-05, 08:00 PM Extra Spell feat taken at any level after third. You now have Hunter's Mercy, with no caster levels lost. :)

Oh, and I think Alter Self is in the Tranformation Domain from Races of Eberron. Great domain.

12-30-05, 12:46 AM As others have stated, there are a few ways to do it (though some, such as Extra Spell, could be subject to nerfing by your DM). There are two really easy, fully legitimate ways to fulfill your desires.Take one level of Ranger. You now have the ability to use any wand of a Ranger spell. You've only lost one caster level. This is the closest to your criteria of actually being a cleric.Be an Archivist. You get full spellcasting, automatically being able to pull spells from the Cleric spell list. Meet a fourth level Ranger. Have him cast Hunter's Mercy for you as you scribe it into a scroll. Copy said scroll into your prayer book. You can now cast Hunter's Mercy, and you've not lost a caster level.

Since a rangers spell casting level is half his current level, wouldn't a cleric casting hunters mercy (through extra spell) have to cast it as a second level spell?

EDIT: I am mistaken..I thought i read this somewhere on the CO forums before. Since Hunters mercy is only for rangers and their spell level is half their class level. Some spells do have different spell levels based on the class.

12-30-05, 04:50 PM A Ranger (at level 4, when he first gets the spell) would cast it as a 2nd level caster casting a 1st level spell. The cleric would cast it as his normal Cleric caster level casting a 1st level spell. I think you're confusing caster level with spell level. Hunter's Mercy is always a 1st level spell, and caster level doesn't matter at all for it. It has no CL-dependant variables, so it works the same for the Cleric as for the Ranger.
