I need a build for a Divine and Arcane caster.
I would like it to focus in one ability score.
It is a good campaign.
access to 9th-level spells both arcane and divine and they should be cast at a caster level of 20.
Anyone?

The first and most powerful that jumps to mind is Dru 3/ Wiz 3/ MT 2/ AH 10/ MT 3-4. CL 17 and 9th level spells in both classes. Can cast in armor. Companion Familiar and Spell Channeling. Wildshape and Shapechange from both class spell lists.

MT is from the DMG and AH is from RotW.

By my math that gets him 7th level Arcane and Divine spells, at CL 14 for Arcane and CL 15 for Divine - even with Practiced Spellcaster, that doesn't meet the OPs requirements. Also, Favored Soul has 2 spellcasting stats.

This is a powerful build, but it still relies on 2 casting stats.

I think the best chance is to go for Wiz 3/Archivist (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20051007a&page=3) 3/MT 10/Arcane Hierophant 4, as long as you can figure out some way to get the Trackless Step class feature (although I have no idea how you could do this). With Practiced Spellcaster for both Divine and Arcane spells, this will give you 9th-level spells of both types, based on Int, and allow you to be Good.

It might be easier to go with Gerdreg's build, though, and just accept that you will need 2 casting stats.

Is this possible in any way with the Wiz/Archivist build?
would be great...but I don't think so!

If you don't mind being an evil god hating athiest, Wizard 5/Mindbender 1/Ur-Priest 2/Mystic Theurge (8 or 10)/Archmage (2 or 4) nets you 18th level Wizard casting and 10th level Ur-Priest casting, and can be used to get a CL of 57 if you use the proper items and a Consumptive Field. However, the Ur-Theurge is a very MAD person.

Yes, that was a pun.

You don't neccassarily have to do the CL 57 trick. However, Ur-Theurge is one of the few [if any] ways to actually get level 9 cleric and wizard spells. The only thing you have to do is have 2 levels of Ur-Priest, 8 levels of Mystic Theurge, and the rest of the levels be in classes that grant wizard caster levels.

My favorite dual-caster build is still:

Psychic Warrior or Psion 5/ABC 1/Beholder Mage 2/Ur-Priest 2/Mystic Theurge 8/XYZ 2

Plenty of room to play around with dips, 20 CL and 9th level spells in both arcane and divine, and all the benefits of Beholder Magery.

It's not completely broken, but it is a significant step up in power from the usual theurgic types.

How can you take the beholder mage PrC?
ABC? XYZ?

With my Dirty Trick #1: Behold (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=540563).

The short version of it is: Polymorph Any Object and Metamorphic Transfer. The thread has details on how to minimize the risk of the situation and explains the sundry benefits of Beholderdom.

What would ABC be? Something that increases Manifester level?
LordofProcrastination

ABC can be anything, really. Advancing manifester level isn't necessary past 5th level.

If you made XYZ 2 more levels of MT, then you could have CL 12 base in Ur-Priest, and Beholder Mage CL 24th, which would make Ur-Priest CL also 24th.

ABC could be Fleshwarper for a bit of flavor. A psion could qualify at level 5.

Disclaimer: If in your game, your DM treats Rainbow Servant as full caster progression then the build below works well.

Wizard 5/Rainbow Servant 10/Sacred Exorcist 1/Dweomerkeeper 4

Full progression, 20th caster level, 1 casting stat, divine metamagic, 1/day SU Wish.

Is this Caster Level 20 overall or CL 20 of Beholder Mage and CL 20 of Ur-Priest?

Sort of - over the course of 14 levels, it gets 12 caster levels for each side.

If your DM plays a little fast and loose with entry reqs for Mystic Theurge, you can pull this one off:

Illumian (Krau, Naen) with Improved Sigil (Krau) feat taken by 3rd level
Dru3/Wiz1/MT X/AH10/MT some more. I'm too lazy to figure out how many MT levels you need to hit the AH reqs. That should get you 19/17 for 9th level spells... and Krau Sigil bumps both of those by 2 to 20/19 (max of char lev)... its not quite 20th in both, but you can pick up a +1 CL easily.

I got lucky and convinced my current DM to let me go Illumian FavoredSoul2/Sorc1/MT17.

First, I'd like someone to explain that. How does Caster Level 12 in Ur-Priest result in Caster Level 24 for Beholder Mage? And how does CL 24 in Beholder Mage result in Ur-Priest CL 24?

Also, I'd like to know if, with the Precocious Apprentice and Improved Sigil (Krau) feats, you meet the prerequisites for Mystic Theurge as soon as level 3 (for the bonus feat), since when you level up, you can use your HD feats to meet the prerequisites of a prestige class. But I want to know if the capacity to cast a 2nd level spell or two means that you are able to cast 2nd level arcane spells. That would allow you to be 20th CL in both arcane and divine (same build than the guy before me) and faster.

Oh yeah it's written.
To determine the caster level of an ur-priest, add the character’s ur-priest levels to one-half of her levels in other spellcasting classes.
But that doesn't explain how CL 12th in Ur-Priest gives CL 24th in Beholder Mage.

Edit: Whoops, my bad.
A beholder mage’s spells function at a caster level equal to twice its beholder mage level.

Bamboo Spirit Folk Wizard3/Archivist3/MysticTheurge4/ArcaneHeirophant10?

I know it was mentioned above, but it really is the simplest, without relying on Ur-Priest-like accelerated casters.
If they're allowed, though...

Ur-Priest: 9th level spells in 9 levels, must be evil. (Divine)
Apostle of Peace: 9th level spells in 9 levels, must be good. (Divine)
Divine Crusader: 9th level spells in 9 levels, one domain only. (Divine)
Beholder Mage: 9th level spells in 9 levels, must be a beholder. (Arcane)

Just to help out.

Are you not considering a gestalt sorceror/favoured soul (+possibly a bit of paladin for divine grace.)

Or are you restricted from gestalt.

Without switching to Beholder for that version of the arcane/divine caster, is Human the best race for this type of charecter, or are there some races that have +wis/+int (in the case of two casting stats) with a +0 LA?

To add to Dark and Stormy's list:
Sublime Chord: 4-9th level casting in 9(maybe 10) levels (Arcane)

A while ago I made an Exalted Apostle of Peace/Sublime Chord/Mystic Theurge(sp?), but I can't remember the build, but that has 2 casting stats, lets see where things overlap:
Archivist/Wizard: Int
Mystic(Dragonlance Spontaneous Divine caster)/Sorceror: Cha(weaker due to spell progression being 1 level slower for both classes)
Shugenja(Complete Divine)/Sorceror: Cha

Can sub Wu Jen or Beguiler for Wizard in the above, or Warmage for Sorceror

If you use Psionics a Psion/Wizard/Cerebremancer could work, but I don't know how you would make up for the 3 lost levels and what to do in the last 4 levels, that build would share Int

Couple things to keep in mind:

1. Archivist is only partially Int based. People seem to consistently overlook the fact that it still needs Wisdom as well.

2. Ur-Priest does not calculate caster level based on your caster level in other classes. It calculates caster level based on your levels in other spellcasting classes. HUGE difference. A Wiz 5/Wu Jen 1/Bard 1/Sorceror 1/Duskblade 1/Warmage 1/Sublime Chord 1 has a caster level of 6 for wizard, 6 for Wu Jen, 6 for Bard, 6 for Sorceror, 6 for Duskblade, 6 for Warmage, and 6 for Sublime Chord...but only has 11 levels in spellcasting classes. Add a level of Ur-Priest, and your Ur-Priest caster level is 7, NOT 22.

The Favored Soul only requires Wisdom for spell save DCs, so if you plan things out well you can still use it for dual casting without losing too much. Just use your FS spells for curing and buffing and other things that don't require saves, and dedicate your Sorc spells to blasting and save or die stuff.

To learn, prepare and cast a spell, an Archvist needs an Int score of 10 + Spell's Level, the DC is Int-based and the only thing he gains from high Wis are bonus spells. So, I guess you're somehow wrong. The Archvist doesn't need Wisdom, but it would be good if he had it. You can easily ignore your Wisdom if you wish, or if you don't have other option.
This can make all the difference here.
Caelic

07-09-06, 07:51 PM
Well, yes. And a fighter doesn't need Strength, but it's good if he has it. I amend my statement: the Archivist needs Wisdom if he doesn't want to suck.

Excelent argument. I'm impressed. ¬¬
What I'm saying is that, if he plays a Wizard/Cleric he is going to need Int 19 and Wis 19 to cast both 9th lvl Wizard and Cleric Spells. If he uses any spontaneous, Charisma based, casting class, he's problably going to lose the 9th level spells, what makes irrelevant if he have enough Charisma to gain bonus spells for that level. Playing a Archivst/Wizard, even with Wis 10, seems a better option, since he'll be able to cast 9th level spells.

Bump.

Still looking for a LA+0 race with bonus to Int and Wisdom. I'm more then likely going to be playing a divine/arcane caster in a game soon.
