according to the PHB 3.5, a druid's companion isconsidered a magical beast, which prevents it from being the target of animal growth, magic fang, nature's favor and the like.
has there been a ruling or errata somewhere that changed this?
If so please state where so I can give a link or URL to my DM.

if not, then what the heck is wrong with the druid......

The errata is as follows:

Animal Companion
Player’s Handbook, page 36
Contrary to the text, a druid’s animal companion is not
treated as a magical beast; it remains an animal.
Trim the first paragraph of the sidebar so that it reads as
follows:
A druid’s animal companion is superior to a normal
animal of its kind and has special powers, as described
below.
