| Gilyu02-11-07, 05:15 PM | I am making a dwarf blacksmith in a campaign but I don't know what class to take, any suggestion? PS: I want to craft magic items and we have access to Gestalt classes |
| PhaedrusXY02-11-07, 05:16 PM | Cleric/Fighter. |
| Gilyu02-11-07, 05:18 PM | Even though most spells required for crafting are arcane? |
| PhaedrusXY02-11-07, 05:20 PM | What exactly are you crafting, then? Take the magic or spell domain. You'll get a LOT more useful replies if you read the posting guidelines, and provide more information. |
| Gilyu02-11-07, 05:26 PM | Well, I'll be crafting mostly anything we will need and I still have no idea of what we will need. It's just that I quickly looked in my DM book and most effect seems to need Arcane Spells (For weapons and armor) |
| PhaedrusXY02-11-07, 05:34 PM | I have no idea what books you can use, what your stats will be, etc. Please read the posting guidelines (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626244). I don't want to waste my time listing things you can't even use. I will suggest this, however: a Wizard/Archivist would be able to cast almost any spell in the game, and would use Intelligence for both. Add a level of Runesmith, and you can do so while wearing armor. Edit: 12 levels of Warlock (CArcane) and 2 levels of Chameleon (Races of Destiny) would let you make just about anything, I think. Also, don't forget that you can work with other spellcasters to meet the prerequisites on item crafting. Otherwise, it would be impossible to craft some core items using the core rules only. |
| darksamuari02-11-07, 05:36 PM | I'll throw out some. The Ironsoul Forgemaster (Magic of the Incarnum) The Battlesmith (Races of Stone) The Runesmith; it's a little different from what you are going for but I like runes so... (Races of Stone). And if those don't tickle your whistle you could all ways try to be an Artificer. |
| Gilyu02-11-07, 05:41 PM | Sorry, so I can use : Core, races of stones/wild all the complete, unhearted arcana, vile darkness/exalted deeds (the magic of friends) Race: Dwarf Stats: 18,12,16,18,17,16 (Best rolls in my life, can put them anywhere) Level: 1 Houserules: Varies, I need to ask What Im looking for: A blacksmith |
| Nanshork02-11-07, 06:03 PM | Sorry, so I can use : Core, races of stones/wild all the complete, unhearted arcana, vile darkness/exalted deeds (the magic of friends) Race: Dwarf Stats: 18,12,16,18,17,16 (Best rolls in my life, can put them anywhere) Level: 1 Houserules: Varies, I need to ask What Im looking for: A blacksmith Well with those books and you're going to definetely be a dwarven blacksmith who makes magic items, I'd try to go for the Battlesmith PrC in Races of Stone. |
| Gilyu02-11-07, 06:04 PM | Still, what base class should I take? i have access to Gestalt classes like i said sooner. |
| Nanshork02-11-07, 06:05 PM | Still, what base class should I take? i have access to Gestalt classes like i said sooner. I'm away from my books so I'll have to get back to you on that, sorry. |
| Gilyu02-11-07, 07:19 PM | Ok, I called a few friends and got my hands of "Magic of the Incarnum" which was spoken of sooner. I really liked the Ironsoul Forgemaster so I thought of a base class of: Soulborn/Wizard, using the wizard spells for my craft and Soulborn for the PrC. Opinions? |
| SKAMBANKT02-11-07, 09:04 PM | sounds fine. I´m currently playing a Dwarven Cleric 7/ Battlesmith 2, and it is pretty awesome. Multiplying class level by 3 to define Casterlevel on magic items created, cast spells, wear heavy armour, turn undead, wisdom bonus to dmg with warhammer, AC-bonuses, it is a mean-ass char. I love him to bits. There are stronger classes for item-creation (like Artificer), but if you want to do some real damage on a dungeon-crawl, its not a bad way to go. |
| evilgenius02-11-07, 09:49 PM | Well with those books and you're going to definetely be a dwarven blacksmith who makes magic items, I'd try to go for the Battlesmith PrC in Races of Stone. +1 on the Battlesmith. |
| Gilyu02-12-07, 07:55 AM | Sure, battlesmith needs to be taken, Ironsoul Forgemaster is neat too (Has secret of the forge too) My problem was mostly, like I said sooner, my base class. Well, thanks for the help people. |
| nittanytbone02-12-07, 09:49 AM | Cleric is NEVER a bad idea for a base class. Good saves, good HP, decent selection of skills, turn undead DMM goodness, and full casting. If you need SP, go Cloistered Cleric and match with something that has heavy armor proficiency for your gestalt. |
| Bonzai02-12-07, 11:09 AM | My personal favorite would be Fighter 2/Incarnate 3/Ironsoul Forgemaster 10/Incarnate 5. You could also go Soulborn 5/Ironsoul Forgemaster 10/Soulborn 5, for more BABs and HP, but then you will need to blow a feat to shape an incarnate soulmeld. The fighter dip was mostly for the weapon and armor proficiencys, but the extra feats don't hurt either. Ironsoul Forgemaster lets you creat magical arms and armors, as well as letting you invest incarnum to bolster your armor, shield, and weapon. Also, Incarnates have a soulmeld called Mage specticles, that allow you to invest in it, to gain the use magic devices skill. This will allow you to use a scroll to meet any casting requirement you may have for an item. Thats just me though. I like the flavor of a non-caster Dwarven Smith. |
| McBAMF02-12-07, 12:25 PM | I know this sounds lazy on my part but it's the right choice. Play a Dwarf Artificer. |
| DeimoZz02-12-07, 01:03 PM | I know this sounds lazy on my part but it's the right choice. Play a Dwarf Artificer. Eberron isn't listed in his allowed books. If combine ironsoul forgemaster and battlesmith in the right way you can get a caster level of 50 for crafting. I don't know exactly how you can abuse that... but it looks pretty cool :P |
| Drunk_Yoda02-12-07, 02:38 PM | I also say that you should go for the Artificer he's the perfect blacksmith... if you use him correctly you can create extremly deadly characters... all you need is a lot of cash. If you cannot use the Artificer(in the eberron campaign setting) try making a Wizard/Cleric/Mistic Theurge with all of the craft feats or if youc an use dragonlance there is a book, can't remember which, there is a basic class with out magic that is called the expert you choose what he specializes in and your specialization give you habilities. Sorry for the typo's I'm in a hurry. |
| McBAMF02-12-07, 08:27 PM | Oh, sorry. I guess I must skimmed over the whole no Eberron thing. |
| Nathreet02-12-07, 10:03 PM | If you need weapons and armor, cleric is a great option. Not to mention that, given the durations on magic vestment and greater magic weapon, you can magic up your party's weapons every morning rather than creating permanent magic items. Plus they can make holy weapons (+2d6 vs. evil), merciful weapons (+1d6, all weapon damage is subdual)amulets of health, rings of protection, ability score boosters and other basic staples. With the right domains you can get access to spells needed for certain items: plan ahead what you'll be making. Btw, I wouldn't craft weapons and armor yourself, unless you have a LOT of time. Enchanting them, OTOH, will save the party a great deal of cash in a short amount of time. |
| OologahQ02-12-07, 11:32 PM | http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10493958&postcount=31 You could probably power up that build with gestalt goodness to fit the bill. For me, the signature item of a good dwarven crafter is the Dwarven Thrower, which is really good with the Bloodstorm Blade class from Tome of Battle. Also, Cleric of Tharmekhul is good for a dwarven crafter, god of the forge and all. |
| PhaedrusXY02-12-07, 11:34 PM | Btw, I wouldn't craft weapons and armor yourself, unless you have a LOT of time. Or Fabricate... |
| Gilyu02-13-07, 08:00 AM | -I DO have a lot of time -Money-wise, I find most of my materials from adventuring -XP-wise there is a spell called Energy Link or something that shares the XP cost of crafting -My idea of soulborn was rejected so I'll simply go Fighter/Cleric and plan my domains |
