| laotching05-14-04, 08:53 AM | #1: Still not answered on my other thread, here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=236612) about Blasphemy working with the stacked True Necro + Mystic Theurge build. #2: How does that build even get higher spell DCs? Or does it? Spell DCs are 10 + spell level + Ability score mod. This would end up no higher than in any other build, as it does not factor caster level into the calculation. #3: Leading on from that, how does the 3.5 Red Wizard get higher DCs? They changed everything from "+1 to spell save DC" to "increases effective caster level," which makes SR spells harder to resist but keeps them the same difficulty as far as saving against them. #4: Which brings us to another question about the Red Wizard--can't you take 1 level as a specialist wizard, a few levels as a sorceror, become a Red Wizard, add the "+1 to existing arcane spellcasting class" every level to sorcerer, be able to learn all the "prohibited" spells as a sorceror, gain all the benefits of being a Red Wizard, and essentially use the wizard class as a dummy class? Edit: Another thing which has bugged me: #5: Each domain is supposed to only offer 1 spell per level, right? So clerics, with their two domains, get to choose one of two domain spells per level to memorize each day. For example, the level 8 Death domain spell is supposed to be Create Greater Undead. So how come Symbol of Death has "[Death]" next to it, as if it were a Death domain? And there are other spells like this, obviously. Perhaps the Cleric domain spells listed in the PHB and elsewhere are merely "guidelines" to choosing which domain spell to take at each level? |

| catharz05-14-04, 06:11 PM | :p Why don't you ask customer service, if you think we're slow? As for the Wizard/Sorceror/Red wizard: Maybe, buy you would be two levels behind a wizard even with the most favorable interpretation. Which effectively cancels out +2 of the spell power  At the worst interpretation, when you specialize as a wizard you can no longer cast spells from prohibited schools even as a Sorceror. |
| laotching05-14-04, 07:54 PM | You'd be one level behind a regular sorcerer, but get Spell Power + a lot. And, heh, I didn't mean to come off as demanding. It's just that if nobody takes an interest in a thread for a few hours, it goes off the front page and nobody sees it again. |
| guarnasco05-14-04, 09:31 PM | #5: i belive is 'cause of certain immunities or bonuses U get to spells with a descriotor, like EVIL descriptor casted at +1 effective level if u have evil domain or immunity to DEATH effects if u are undead just my 0.02€ |
| MorandirNailo05-15-04, 05:35 PM | Blasphemy does not work. It's not a Necro or Death Domain spell, so your increased caster level is useless here. As far as the point of the insane caster level, the main benefits are penetrating SR, and more HD of undead under your control. The TN/MT combo combined with the General of Undeath spell (in several books, among them Ghostwalk and MoF, I believe) is just scary...350+ HD of undead makes for a nice army, especially when they can create spawn themselves (gotta love chain of command). Anyway, if you're looking for other ways to abuse your advanced CL, you need to go to 3rd-party sources, if those are allowed in your game. Necromancy: Beyond the Grave by Mongoose is one of the best Arcane Necro books out there, IMO...and offers several Necro spells with damage that scales with caster level. Hollowfaust: City of Necromancers by S&S is good too, especially for fun flavor. When it comes to spell DCs, sorry, 3.5's pretty much nerfed that. The best way I know of is through alignment spells. SF: Evil still gives a +2 (unless of course Complete Divine changes it) and you might be able to convince your DM to allow a Greater Spell Focus: Evil feat. Combine it with a feat from Monte Cook's Book of Eldritch Might: Lace Spell: Holy/Unholy. It basically lets you add the Evil descriptor to any spell, and adds +2 DC against Good creatures. Combine with SF:Evil for a +2 bump to all your spells, +4 against Good. This raises your CL by another one (Evil domain power) since all spells are [Evil] now. Mor |
