| Micah Orenson02-19-05, 09:10 PM | Hi, Having been reunited with a pile of my gaming gear, and in the absence of a gaming group, I've fallen back on the old stand-by of character creation. I was hoping for some advice on a build, and comments on a couple of unrelated issues. First: I've been tinkering around with ideas for a "soldier" build; it would be combat heavy, but not weapon / role specailized, and with enough skills that things like foraging, ambush, etc. would be viable. An obvious combo would be ranger / fighter, but I'm wondering what else people would come up with. Second, I'm increasingly intrigued by the charisma stacking possibilities of a sorcerer(bard)/paladin gish, but can't seem to get it to work as an "organic" character (i.e., one that would actually be played from 1st level, as opposed to inserted in an ongoing campaign). Gish in general seem extremely vulnerable with their lack of armour, and the need to pump charisma in the build (at the expense of other stats) would make this one even more vulnerable. Third, what is people's opinion of the half-orc? I like it for flavour, and the strength bonus is nice at lower levels, but the hit to In and Ch is rough in anything other than a dungeon crawl, especially in mid to low power games. The St bonus is also easily made up by about level 4 or five, as buffs become more common. Is it a viable race choice for anything other than a strength-led basher? I should point out that I'm the kind of guy that enjoys playing counter-intuitive characters. A half-orc S/P gish, for example, sounds cool to me, despite the obvious problems. I'm also the type of player to show up with a gnomish or halfling barbarian. Micah |
