Anyone here familiar with A Game of Thrones?
I just joined a game of it, we're level 2 characters.
I'm focused on building a Defensive Man-at-Arms

Thus far I'm using a Bastardsword and a Shield.
The Bastardsword is a purely an RP bit. The character is not a knight, but plans on becoming one, until then he'll be using a bastardsword and shield.

I know Sword/shield combos usually are pretty bad in D&D, but after looking at how the Armor is changed, such as Damage Reduction from armor rather than AC, I figured the shield would be useful.

Thus far the build is:

Str 17
Dex 12
Con 14
Int 14
Wis 12
Cha 11

Man At Arms lev 2
6 points worth of disadvantages (I've got oaths to House Tully and the Night Watch).
Feats are thus:
Devotion (Tully): Family, Duty, Honor
Devotion (Knight Watch): Combat Expertise
Human: EWP: Bastard Sword
Lev1: Improved Trip
MAA1: Improved Disarm
MAA2: Brute(Attack): Bastard Sword

I do plan on grabbing mounted combat because the game will be combat heavy and I do happen to have a horse as granted by the GM due to backstory (same wth the sword). I figured I'd make use of my starting package. So aside from those points, what can I do to optimize?

:D I'm not an expert on Game of Thrones but I'd love to see what the optimizers come up with......

BTW did you see that ASOIAF is going to be released as a series on HBO?

Yeah, haven't played in a GoT game yet (though would like to). From what I understand of the rules, though, combat is especially deadly and even a minor wound can prove fatal (no exaggeration) if left unattended for too long.

Definitely something to keep in mind when designing a warrior type character...

Yeah I noticed. The other thing is my character is wearing pieced armor
Chainmail underneath with a Breastplate, so my AR is effectively 8, it's 5 if they do called shots to my limbs.
Also i'm using a large shield, so they're likely going to try and bash through it.

When planning for heavy armor keep in mind the fatugue rules to make sure you can fight long enough.

A shield is much more useful in AGOT so go for it. Also I reccomend choosing either trip or disarm and subbing the other one for Brute(defence).

To truly optimize you would switch to a longsword and then choose a feat to replace the EWP. I kinda like parry but my chars usually wear less armor. Perhaps some type of endurance or raised shock value would be useful.
