I've been playing D&D for about 8 months now and I've built a few diff. kinds of characters but I've never built a spell caster. My G.F. would like to play with us now and she wants to be a spell caster of some sort. I was wondering if anyone has any good ides for a character. My DM allowed us to put a -1 L.A. on all races so a +1 LA is now a 0. Everything else is pretty normal. But were not running eberron so im pretty limited there. Also, were starting her at about I've 5. But I needed a path to follow longer if she decides she likes it. Any help would be great. Thanks

Questions:

1) Divine or Arcane?
2) Is she a noobie to DnD?
3) Does she want to blow stuff up or protect the group?

probably arcane, yes, this would be her first character, blowing things up. also she really wanted to be able to fly. I thought about half fey but i couldnt remember the LA for it and i dont have that book with me.

Human Sorceress/Eldritch Knight with a focus on Enchantment spells and some of the Draconic feats from Complete Arcane, as well as the spells from the Draconomicon. I guarantee any woman will love this character*.

Warmage. There's fewer mechanics involved - she doesn't have to select spells known or memorize spells daily, doesn't have to keep a spell book, gets to wear some armor for some added protection, and the spells are pretty straightforward.

A warlock with the Fell Flight invocation might do the trick. As a warlock, you can blast away all day without worrying about running out of power; I remember when I first tried D&D I always felt I ran out of spells too quickly.

Edit: Oops -- Fell Flight isn't possible until 6th level. However, you could choose a flying race like Raptoran (from Races of the Wild) or Air Mephling (from the Planar Handbook). Air Mephlings get a bonus to Dex and Cha (useful for warlocks/warmages) and have perfect manoeuverability.

I remember hearing half fey being +2, but I don't have the source on that one. Your level is incredibly important on this one, as Fly is 3rd level and only accessible at 5th or 6th level.

Warmage or Warlock is an option for the blasting, but you wouldn't get fly unless you picked up a varient race (and fly is going to cost you some). Maybe a magical item would be a good idea. Even boots of levitation are better than you would think.

Otherwise, I would suggest Sorceror (especially if you don't have Complete Arcane, where the other two are), since then she won't have to worry about spell slot selections at all, and she might enjoy using the charisma to become 'party face'. The class is sub-par on this board, but it is a good one to start out with. Just don't load up on too many damage spells- be sure to get utility and defensive things. If she is creative, illusions are great because they rely almost entirely on that, but are very flavorful and you don't have to worry about a lot of stats for them.

I'd suggest aasimar Sorcerer, Sorc is fairly easy on the mechanics.
Plus most female players (In my experience) like to have good looking/high charisma characters.

Once she gets better at the mechanics, possibly find a PrC that looks interesting, but starting players should try to play straight core classes IMHO.

[edit] as far as flight, Outsider Wings feat from Races of Faerun, gives aasimar/tieflings 30' Average fly speed, with the ability to carry medium/heavy loads (speed is decreased like land speed).

I'd also suggest taking feat: improved flight for the ability to hover (and cast full round spells while flying)
