| Dark_Sesshomaru03-07-06, 03:08 AM | I need some help with my wizard build. Im building a wizard at level 6. Hes going to be bent around conjuration, mainly summoning. Im also getting a starting pack of 13,000 gold. Since I wont have a spellbook filled up with a bunch of offensive spells, Ill mostly be summoning creatures to help out instead. But I dont want to miss out on the fun either. I want to summon creatures then fight beside them. So Im thinking of taking 1 level of fighter and have 5 levels in wizard. That way I can have most proficiancies needed for melee. Though, if I took all 6 levels in wizard I would be able to select the fourth level spell list when I reach level seven... So Im kind of between a rock and a hard spot and the deadline is closing in on me. What do you think is the best way to work this type of build? |

If you want to enter melee as a Primary Arcane Caster, you need to resign yourself being a Gish and losing at least a few caster levels. If you want to focus on casting, it's a bit too all-encompassing to drop even a single caster level. Or you could just be a Bard, and Summon things as well as kick ass in melee. That's in addition to all of the myriad other skills, spells, and abilities that the Bard packs in there. Then again, perhaps I'm just Biased... |

Generally if you're going to make something that's extremely good at summoning minions then your best bet is to keep summoning minions. If you want something with a bunch of strong minions that can also fight check out the recent Dread Necromancer Gish thread. Your undead army should already be there, thus you don't have to summon them, thus you're perfectly free concentrate on melee with the full benefit of all those minions right off the bat. |

A Cleric with Persistent Divine Power will have fighter BAB, heavy armor, and full casting levels for Monster Summoning spells. After you take the necessary feats for that, you can take Spell Focus and move into the Thaumaturgist class for better summonings. Also, Summoning Domain will give +2 CL for your summon spells. |

On the other hand the Champion spell template produces max hp summons for a reasonably priced cost. (hmm combining the two rock) War spells are Dr#309 and spell templates are somewhere, i'll go look . |
