The Space Pope 05-28-04, 04:47 PM	Hi! First post, please don't eat me. ;) Anyways.. My DM and I were recently having a bit of a discussion about D&D and multiclassing. It eventually got around to us debating on whether one can make an effective mass multiclass character. He believes that only characters who specialize can be effective in D&D, while I maintain that it is possible to build an effective character who extensively multiclasses. One thing lead to another, and now I've got 20 bucks riding on proving myself right. Unfortunately, my D&D-Fu is weak. And so I turn to the Character Optimization board, known for being able to tweak the D20 system till it begs for death, for assistance. With 21 levels, 80 points to distribute on stats(None above 18 before racial mods, none below 3), and any +0 to +2 LA race, is it possible to build an effective and fun character who spends no more than 5 levels in any particular class or PrC? I'd appreciate any help or advice you can give me.
rilem 05-28-04, 04:56 PM	You and your DM may be talking about the same thing from different angles. Many of the strongest builds posted here are, in fact, specialized — but they may use seven different classes and PrCs to hone that specialization. Hunt around a bit -- look at the Build FAQ and, especially, the links off of that FAQ -- you'll find plenty of very, very complex builds. Look at the gish (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150451&highlight=gish) thread, the bard (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67002&highlight=gish) thread, and so on. Search for "Kenny, the Ur-Priest Lich", "Cheater of Mystra" and Hulking Hurler (when you do a million points of damage you don't need a cute name) builds. All could be considered "specialized" in some form or other, but use a variety of classes to achieve their goal. If, however, what you're seeking is a build that's good at skills, and spellcasting, and fighting, and healing — in short, everything — that's a little tougher. But it's possible: search for Snow Savant's Triple Threat and Quadruple threat builds for some ideas, but there are undoubtedly more.

Laelenie 05-28-04, 07:34 PM	Paladin 2/Blackguard 10/Nar Demonbinder1/bard 1/Figther 1/Spellsword 1/Arcane trickster 4/ HAS BAB +16 cha to saves cha to damage via divine power +6d6 sneak attack a lot of skill points and a very large class skill list some nifty arcane casting (up to level 8) some nifty divine casting up to level 4 arcane strike for damage 1 bonus feat Impromptu sneak attack & ranged legerdemain pretty much all rounder, don't you think ? Still very powerful build IMHO. P.S: Yoou can change the fighter level with a bard one for better skills, and more casting but you lose a feat. up to u

Blackguard 10 lame :P Space Pope, as rilem pointed out your task is quite easily fullfilled. in most cases its better to stick on one full progression of a PrC though, but you dont have to. there are also some decent PrCs with no more then 5 levels... gs Funny
RabidWeasel 05-28-04, 09:12 PM	Rogue 5/Fighter 2/Barbarian 1/Swashbuckler 3/Invisible Blade 5/Master Thrower 5 STR 10 DEX 18 +1 (level) CON 18 INT 18 +4 (levels) WIS 12 CHA 4 You have great skills, almost full bab, 6d6 sneak attack, int to damage and AC with daggers, and can use palm throw in conjunction with two weapon fighting to make a ton of attacks per round.
