For role-playing reasons that I will only briefly touch upon, my character is going to become a lich. We are playing Forgotten Realms and my character is an Ur-priest, therefore he doesn't worship a diety and in FR that means bad things after death. Therefore, to protect myself from the inevitable I have taken all the neccessary steps to become a lich. I have a contingent spell that will begin the proccess once I hit -9 hps and the necessary phylactery. Now, I'll want someway to protect my phylactery once the process is complete. So far all I have is an Iron Golem and two mummy lords. I don't have a good place to store it nor do I have any other protective measures. What would you do with your phlyactery?
Thanks

Build some form of Sarcophagus to put it in, in a temple under the sea, and have my golems and mummies protect it underwater.

I would also set up Contingencies that teleported it to otehr places around Faerun should people enter anywhere near the Phylactery, by permanent Alarm Spells (as the condition to set off contingency).

So once they kill you in your physical form, you transport back your temple where no man can reach you, and thus you can't get a new body and you are burried alive for all eternity :D.

I'd rather find another spot

Ok fine. Amendment to my initial response. Have some dead bodies ready near your phylactery protected by gentle repose or such magic so that you have SOMETHING to re-enter in order to live again.

Picky picky.

So instead of suggesting something for the OP, you add simply that mine won't work. Nothing constructive, just deconstructive.

Sometimes it is really difficult to find help on these boards, unless you are building something ludicrous or broken.

You want to hide your Phylactery, you say?

Build a tower with tons of traps and stone floors. Now, cast Nystul's Magic Aura on yor Phylactery so it looks like its non-magical. Then, go cast Trap the Soul on something really nasty, like a Great Wyrm Shadow Dragon. Then cast Nystul's Magic Aura on that gem so it looks REALLY magical. Now, on the top floor, put the gem with the nasty in it in some urn or something surrounded by tons of magical traps. Then go down to the second floor from the ground, or something like that. Take your Phylactery, cast Transmute Rock to Mud on one of the floor tiles. Put your Phylactery into the floor tile, smooth it over, then Transmute Mud to Rock.

Voila.

One idea, is cast a permanent Otiluke's Resilient Sphere on the Phylactery, then sink it into a deep part of the ocean. If you get killed, you'll come back right next to the Phylactery, inside the sphere, so you've got a clear space and dont suffer from the effects of the preassure etc, then just teleport yourself out.
If anyone tries to get to it, then they'll have to break the sphere first, while resisting the effects of the preassure, and you can cast alarms and etc on it.

Of course, simply casting permanent Invisibility and permanent Blink on it would certainly go a long way.

Or do what the guy with the Sharn avatar said, except go make hundreds of gems of TTS, mix your phylactery among them, make some of the gems specially coloured so people think they're the phylactery, then hide the gems (use regular gems too) in bunches, all over the tower.

One other idea, though likely your GM would cause the FR gods to take offense.

Take your phylactery, and make it in the shape of a holy symbol of some god (say whatever the FR equivalent of Pelor is), and attaching it to the roof/steeple of one of the Grand Temples for that god, who is going to look for a Lich's Phylactery on the roof of a temple?

Wouldn't the aura of OMG FRIGGING EVIL be a dead giveaway?

I'm sure there must be some way to conceal that.
Or simply place it on the roof (or even *in* the roof) of a god of death, or slaughter or some such, that temple should have an aura of evil anyways.

I maintain that Nystul's Magic Aura is the single most useful first level spell. ;)

How about a 10 x 10 x 10 demiplane with a dimension lock on it?

I'll have to get back to you on this one. I've come to a similar situation, but I didn't have the additional handicap of being an Ur-Priest. I was a True Necromancer (Cleric of Weejas). Let's just say that I made her very happy over the course of my career and when the time came for me to pass, I just handed her the phylactery saying "keep it as long as I'm useful".

I know that isn't the absolute immortality you're looking for, but I'm not one to think that it exists. One thing to ponder...while I've seen several wonderful ways to protect a phylactery, many of them leave you no way to get a new body. See you go back to the phylactery (like a vampire to a coffin ironically). The thing of it is that little box/orb/whatever doesn't move. If there isn't material on-hand, you'll be waiting for a long time.

My best advice is that you need to become a demi-lich as fast as you can. Unfortunately epic might be a ways off for you. Besides all the absolutely rediculous bonuses of being a demi-lich, you don't need to worry about your phylactery as long as your gems are intact. Better yet lets us not forget that astral projection at will. You can hide yourself away on the deepest, darkest, most inhospitable layer of the Abyss and still tour the multiverse.

I seem to remember that astral travelers who enter another plane are gifted with a body appropriate to the locale (a fire-adapted body for the plane of fire and so on). Why not just go back to the material plane that way? It's a real pain when the demi-lich looks like it used to when it lived millenia ago...trust me. It is.

Barring this ascension, think of the most difficult place to get to or the last place anyone would look (preferably both) and set it there. Stock a few bodies nearby and pray. One thing I might suggest: construct an undead army. Gods know you have the time. If something should happen to you, assign one of your intelligent generals the task of bringing you fresh "clothes".

I'll let the others cover hiding the phylactery. Here are a couple things stolen from this thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=177782) of mine:

A) Use Magic Jar all the time to inhabit living bodies. Noone will know you are a lich, or who you are. If you die, you just reform at your phylactery.

E) Before you become a lich, make (or have someone else make) a bunch of clones of yourself. Also, animate some undead and add the spellstitched template to them (Monster Manual 2). Give them the ability to cast Gentle Repose occasionally. Then bury one each of them with one of your clones deep under the earth in inaccesible tombs. This way, even if someone manages to actually figure out you're a lich, destroy your phylactery, and destroy your body, you'll just come back in one of your clones.

From another thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5381919&postcount=13), ideas on how to be tricky with Magic Jar:

2) When they get there, she will cast Meld with Stone on her familiar. She then casts Magic Jar, and possesses a ghoul. Next she casts Shrink Item on her lifeless body, which her familiar picks up. It melds into a 1 ft. diameter stone from one of the giant's packs. The zombie dragon takes this stone (and drops it near the battlefield).

What would I do? Build it out of Aurorum and then encase the phylactory inside of a 1' thick cube of Magically Hardened, Psionically Hardened, Magically Reinforced Obdurium. And then find a nice, safe place to put that with lots of protection around it.

Or make the phylactery an adamantine sphere (think marble-sized), use Nystul's Magical Aura (mask the aura), cover it in dirt, grime, and other sundry nastiness....and give it to a four-year-old human.

I remeber something like this a while ago, can't remember if it was this forum or not. The best idea that came out of that thread, IMO, was to make your phylactery in the form of a teddy bear or something similar, make it undetectable and indestructible, and give it to a little girl. Anyone who tries to destroy will have to locate it, and then wrench it from the hands of a crying toddler who just can't understand why the "heroes" are stealing from her. If no one finds it before it gets thrown away, it is now hidden among massive amounts of trash and so on, and probably winds up completely lost where no one will look for it.

Well, the beauty of Aurorum is that if it ever breaks...and you die...your group mates can always just put it back together and in theory, it should return you to "life".

It being inside a 700ish HP 70ish Hardness cube is that...well...it's darn hard to destory. Plus with all of the protections you have around it...

Where can I find those materials? You guys are throwing out some wonderful ideas. Today is the first game back since I posted this thread. I'm going to feel out the DM on what he is going to be like when I try to find a secret lair. Sometimes he is like; "roll a d20 and add blah" then I find a killer place, or sometimes he makes us rollplay it (which I prefer) because I usually can find a killer place (but at the expense of dragging the party along for an side-quest I don't want them to know too much about.)

I like the trap the soul idea. Also, I am going to use Magic Jar and have a few clones lying around. I aleady have an Iron Golem and two mummy lords ready to hide with the phylactery. Not a bad start I think.

I'll post more after the game and see what the DM says.

Thanks
