| Garilario09-11-06, 01:47 AM | Diviner 1 / Rogue X Int at least 12, take Sudden Extend and Ex Weapon Prof(Greatbow) feat *Either take greatbow, be an elf, or take a class with martial weapon prof. Turn 0. find/observe your target with spyglass Turn 1. Cast True Strike, Sudden Extended Guided Shot Turn 2. Cast Sniper's Shot. Now, shot your target from 1300ft away(Composite Greatbow) with no penalty, sneak attack and additional +20 to hit. Any suggestion on build/equipment and improvement? |
| guesswhat1232109-11-06, 01:51 AM | repeating crossbow o' doom (speeding+ distance + true strike continious :P ) EDIT: also add on the piercing version of vorpal.. cant think of the name |
| Sithobi109-11-06, 02:28 AM | Wouldn't a sorcerer be better for this position than a wizard? |
| Garilario09-11-06, 02:39 AM | The problem with a sorcerer is the number of spells known. This trick requires 3 different spells. |
| X-Codes09-11-06, 07:35 AM | The problem with a sorcerer is the number of spells known. This trick requires 3 different spells. Scrap sudden extend, just use lesser extend rods and a bucket of Pearls of Power I. Hell, use Wands and the Quick Draw feat. Get Far Shot, too. |
| Dark1ord09-11-06, 08:06 AM | Now, shot your target from 1300ft away(Composite Greatbow) with no penalty, sneak attack and additional +20 to hit.this is cool enough, but 10d6 is on average 35 damage, and that just doesn't seem like a whole lot... using special arrows definitely makes sense - something that would work out a bit like a death attack. otherwise, your whole setup loses it's appeal due to low impact. actually, relying on sneak attack seems like an even worse idea now that I think about it... lots of stuff is immune to that. how about making a specialist who had access to lots of relevant spells that let him set up a killing attack for a specific enemy? don't get me wrong, I like the sniper idea. :) I would just like to see it used to greater effect! |
| Brol_The_Mighty09-11-06, 08:33 AM | I agree, at the moment I too am working on a sniper build, and have come across the problem of sneak attack immunity. Although Telling Blow is a good way around that. |
| Dark1ord09-11-06, 08:49 AM | I agree, at the moment I too am working on a sniper build, and have come across the problem of sneak attack immunity. Although Telling Blow is a good way around that.ok, that doesn't sound right - telling blow grants you easier sneak attack damage, yes, but it doesn't circumvent sneak attack immunity... huh? telling blow is good with e.g. hunter's mercy, definitely. but I don't think it's supposed to otherwise override sneak attack rules. |
| Brol_The_Mighty09-11-06, 09:09 AM | There was a discussion a while back on these boards discussing that very thing. Normally sneak attack feats and such say "this cannot be used on any creature immune to critical strikes/sneak attacks" but it doesn't. I simply states that when a critical is struck, it deals SA damage. Not sure how the thread ended, but last I saw was that it did regardless of type. |
| Garilario09-11-06, 11:55 AM | Hmmm just checked. Too bad assasin's death attack must be melee. So the direction changed: how 'good' can an arrow be? Optimizing an arrow :p Poison seems like a must, the trick is nice for an NPC assasin so don't worry about self poisoning. Diviner 1 / Rogue 4 / Assasin X / other Y |
| obeah09-11-06, 01:37 PM | Hmmm just checked. Too bad assasin's death attack must be melee. So the direction changed: how 'good' can an arrow be? Diviner 1 / Rogue 4 / Assasin X / other Y Rolls..... 1 you shoot yourself in the foot and contract poison Curse you Garilario |
| dvlsadvct09-11-06, 01:58 PM | Throw in Cragtop Archer from RoS for some extra distance @ no penalty to hit. I suppose you would lose some SA pregression, but I think the ends justify the means. |
| Dark1ord09-11-06, 02:05 PM | does it have to be a rogue-ish type of character at all? I mean... lots of spells out there - caster awesomeness and all. lots of spells and class features out there... (hmm, too bad the Arcane Archer's Arrow of Death doesn't have a scaleable DC... but actually, Imbue Arrow does seem interesting enough for this, though... what about a spell that would totally sack the target's fortitude save - and then imbue this on a death arrow? would that work? just thinking out loud here, albeit in parantheses.) it does depend on how far you wanna slide this idea around, conceptually. if you really feel it should be a sneaky kind of sniper (rogue), just let it stay there. ;) |
| Garilario09-11-06, 10:10 PM | It doesn't need to be rogue based. All I want to keep is the 3-spells-combo for the sniper part. Otherwise just make the attack as deadly as possible. :) |
| guesswhat1232109-11-06, 11:03 PM | enchant the arrows with (insert spell here), some options would be like lightning bolt, fireball, flesh to stone, summon monster #, bestow curse, finger of death, energy drain. Edit: BTW sneak attack damage only applies when your target is within 30 feet. |
| Dark1ord09-12-06, 04:59 AM | ok, ran Telling Blow by customer support - thing is, Telling Blow only works if you are in fact able to score a critical hit against your target. consequently, if the target is immune to critical hits, Telling Blow doesn't work... which does seem kind of obvious. ;) now, are there any class features that lets you crit against stuff that's not normally crittable (I know that's not a word)? enchant the arrows with (insert spell here), some options would be like lightning bolt, fireball, flesh to stone, summon monster #, bestow curse, finger of death, energy drain.since Arcane Archer requires at least one level in arcane spell casting, we might as well stick with the arcane route. Imbue Arrow comes at level 2, so that's 2 caster levels lost. but there are several ways of getting them back, and pumping the DC further... maybe this could even be a divine build, divine feats and all. free stuff from domains - and probably also the right spells? mind you, Arcane Archer was just a quick thought of mine. however, it does seem to work well with the combination of the build presented. Edit: BTW sneak attack damage only applies when your target is within 30 feet.that's why he's using the spell Sniper's Shot, I believe. ;) |
| LiamDeclan09-12-06, 05:58 AM | How about this idea? Human Sorcerer w/ 2 flaws for feats. 1. Extend Spell, Searing Spell, Smiting Spell, Empower Spell 3. Exotic Weapon Greatbow 6. Arcane Thesis Combust 9. Easy Metamagic Empower 12. Energy Substitution fire 15. Energy Admixture fire 18. Maximize Spell Okay now we only have to take Sorcerer to 14th level to cast all my feats on Combust, the rest of the levels can be whatever. I am choosing to go this route though: Sorcerer 6/Havoc Mage 5/ Fighter 1/ Spellsword 1/ Eldritch Knight 7 This gives me a Arcane Caster level of 16 and BAB of 15 and I get 2 more feats to choose. I'll go with Point Blank & Far Shot. I can wear light armor w/no arcane failure which is a plus and with the Havoc Mage I can cast any 8th level or lower spell and make an attack with a weapon in the same round and not provoke any attacks of opportunity. With Smiting Spell I can cast any touch spell (I chose Combust) into an arrow, melee weapon, or bolt. Obviously we want a damage dealing sniper so we choose the arrow. Also I am taking the Sorcerer PHB II variant for metamagic quickness instead of a familiar. Turn 0 Find someone to kill Turn 1 Cast True Strike, Cast Extended Guided Shot Turn 2 Cast a Energy Admixtured, Empowered, Searing, Smiting, Maximized Combust on your arrow burning up a 7th level slot. Make your attack roll in same round shooting farther than 1300ft. Damage now is a whopping 160 + 20d8X.5 for the empower plus the bow damage itself. With the added extra feature that they now also have to make a DC15 reflex save to avoid catching on fire to boot. Best thing about this is that with Searing Spell even creatures immune to fire will still take 1/2 damage from it. There is still room for massive improvement as well. We can get rid of Far Shot and take another Arcane Thesis or Metamagic feat too. Fiery Spell for instance will give us another 20 points of damage. |
| Pixie4Life09-12-06, 07:31 AM | Your greatbow could use the Splitting special ability (+3) to clone all arrows you shoot from your bow. The cloned arrow is identical to the one you fire and should have the same effects on it (if I remember correctly). So your damage now when firing your first arrow is (using the damage in the post above from LiamDeclan) (160 + 20d8X.5)*2 = 320 + 20d8 assuming you hit with both the original arrow and the cloned arrow (It's a seperate attack roll and damage roll for each of the two arrows). From http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=642656 (the 3.5 weapon special abilities thread) : Splitting (CoR, 42):- **** (Ranged only) I really like this enchantment, but there are some restrictions like you have to have precise shot. Still two arrows for the price of one? Sign me up! |
| Dark1ord09-12-06, 08:21 AM | sweet! :) I think the splitting enchantment would work much better with a spell that didn't rely on huge amounts of damage - I mean, we wanna avoid just knocking off some hitpoints, don't we? that was kinda the point of avoiding sneak damage - although, granted, MUCH higher amounts here. ;) hmm, but wait... hitpoints... how much con damage can we do (I'm not too familiar with all the spells out there)?... hmm or other attributes - how many of them can be reduced to 0 to kill the target? I forget. I was thinking that a sniper of this sort would be best off being versatile - i.e. being able to do his trick against all sorts of target, and not relying on one damage type (and feats for that type). |
| Johny_Favourite09-12-06, 08:32 AM | A selection of bane arrows is always a good idea. |
| Dark1ord09-12-06, 09:14 AM | sure, Bane... "Against its designated foe, its effective enhancement bonus is +2 better than its normal enhancement bonus. It deals an extra 2d6 points of damage against the foe." not the type of versatility I'm looking for. ;) a more on-the-fly-customizable way of making a kill, rather. still looking for ways of sacking the fortitude save, or con... something like (Greater) Slaying could work with this. Death Arrow too, but that's 10 caster levels lost. but (Greater) Slaying is rendered useless by Death Ward, so... hmm, Death Arrow isn't. a Death Arrow from a Splitting bow... and an imbued spell - if there is one - that messes up the target's (fortitude) save in one way or another? you still there, Garilario? ;) |
| LiamDeclan09-12-06, 03:16 PM | Okay you want a way to mess up the Fortitude save of your opponent? How about a way to Con drain him, Int drain him or heck we can Disinegrate him to boot. Try this build for wierd but uber Greatbow goodness. Human w/2 flaws for feats Wizard 12/ Monk 1/ Enlightened Fist 7 1. Combat Casting, Empower Spell, Smiting Spell, Maximize Spell 3. Easy Empower 5. Easy Maximize (wizard) 6. Exotic Weapon Greatbow 9. Twin Spell 10. Extend (Wizard) 12. Arcane Thesis (Disinegrate) 15. Easy Twin 18. Arcane Thesis Okay a 7th level Enlightened Fist can cast any Ray spell as a Touch spell. So what kind of good ray spells are there? We can choose Ray of Stupidity for our Arcane Thesis and it does 1d4+1 Int damage. When we empower, max and twin that one onto our arrow it will be 10 + 2-5 X .5 damage so we are looking at least 12 points Int damage there. We can also use Enervation! I love this idea, Arcane Thesis Enervation, then empower, max and twin that. Looking at about 10 negative levels when you hit. That will be about -10 to his saving throws too. Next arrow needs to be a Poison (spell) Arcane Thesis to Con drain him. Wait forget Con drain altogether. Lets just choose Disinegrate as our last Arcane Thesis. A empowered, maximized and Twinned, Smiting Arcane Thesis Disinegrate is going to do crap loads of damage when our caster level is 19 with this spell. Take in mind that the enemy has already taken -10 negative levels so he will probably fail that Fortitude save. Thats 2 saves at -10 or take 228 + 38d6X.5 damage. Wow. We can do this or just shoot 2 Enervation arrows at him if you are worried about his saving throws. The Enervation would more than likely kill him. Disinegrate would work against practically all enemies. The only items this dude needs is Int. granting stuff and a Magic Splitting Greatbow. Going Dragon hunting now. Oh yeah this build also has 9th level spells. We can also get rid of the Exotic weapon feat for Quicken spell and just get an enchantment on the bow that gives us proficiency in it. This way we find the bad guy, prepare 2 arrows (they last 1 minute), cast a Haste spell, cast a True Strike and Extended Guided Shot, Fire an arrow, cast a quickened true strike and fire your last arrow. |
| ksbsnowowl09-12-06, 03:24 PM | Not sure what sources you are limiting yourself to, but I have a Sniper Archer in the Archer Build Thread linked in my sig. He does a minimum of 124 damage (or thereabouts) at 10th level. |
| Dark1ord09-12-06, 04:15 PM | looking nice, LiamDeclan! that's certainly the style of a viable sniper - and even though it's a lot heavier on the magic side than the original idea, it's clearly better (so was your first, but it seemed to rely too heavily on one thing). uhm... how do you actually get the spells onto the arrow in this build? oh, and, the haste routine you mention, what rounds excactly are you doing what? I definitely prefer the methods that only allow the target 1 round to - well, die, hopefully. ;) and yes, ksbsnowowl, I do indeed know of your thread! just now, I noticed the build employing the death attack of justice of weald and woe. I never noticed that one before; that seems dead on. one shot, one kill. that class seems to fit the bill of the original idea better, as well. :) comes into bloom rather late, though (death attack)... nasty spells or nasty death attack? I guess it'll be a question of who can keep it up the longest, then. |
| LiamDeclan09-13-06, 04:50 AM | Getting the spells on the arrow is through the Metamagic feat Smiting Spell. This feat is found in the new PHB II. In order of rounds etc... Round 1. Prepare metamagic enervation arrow Round 2. Prepare metamagic disinegrate arrow Round 3. Cast haste Round 4. Cast true strike, cast extended guided shot Round 5. Fire the enervation arrow, Cast a quickened true strike and then fire the disinegrate arrow. Okay it is a little on the slow side to really make someone have a bad day but snipers are supposed to be careful and slow anyways. All in all in only takes 30 seconds to prepare and launch instant death. We can also change the Wizard sniper build to this: Wizard 5/ Monk 1/ Enlightened 7/ Incantatrix 7 this will net us some added goodies and 1 more metamagic feat. We can grab Persistent Spell or Transdimensional Spell. I think Transdimensional Spell would be great for an Arcane Sniper build. |

Now it you have higher ground (and you should) you get an additional +2 to all your ranged attacks How does all this sound for a sniper. And yes I know this is a bit under one mile but it works well enough. Edit: Ohh yeah every hit is one point of con damage to living foes also :D so even with just normal arrows you can drop living opponets. The magical arrows came in my head for the undead and constructs because well... there objects and that spell really :censored: them up. Edit: again... (this is what I meant by not being too familiar with all the spells out there.) Round 5. Fire the enervation arrow, Cast a quickened true strike and then fire the disinegrate arrow.you sure this works? I mean, I suppose you're full attacking, and you can't interrupt that with even a quickened spell, right? besides, your first arrow must count as a surprise round - actually, that's to your benefit, hopefully: round 5 (first "real" round, the surprise round), fire enervation, round 6, hopefully have the best initiative, quickened true strike, fire disintegrate... does that sound right? Okay it is a little on the slow side to really make someone have a bad day but snipers are supposed to be careful and slow anyways. I'd rather use something else. :) as for When it comes to plants, I'm generally not sniping them in the first place. Edit: also damage output aint really all that important when its save or die and con damage. Okay you can still make your arrows with the craft arms and armor feat. I still think you should drop craft wonderous and craft wand, then take Arcane Thesis Poison and Smiting spell. Make your Arrows of Slaying then use Smiting Spell on them for the casting of the Poison spell. Heck go ahead and dip them in poison as well. Now 1 arrow they get hit with makes them have to make several save or die and Con damage. Honestly you are never ever going to have enough Arrows of Slaying on hand anyway. You would be better off with those other 2 feats I mentioned. Or you could take craft rod instead and see if your DM will let you make a Metamagic rod of Smiting Spell. That little rod alone would seriously increase your flexilbility in any encounter. |
| Dark1ord09-14-06, 01:22 PM | ok, I think this fits better in here, so... could this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10073069&postcount=3) (courtesy of Phoenix00, as you'll notice) be used as well? | LiamDeclan09-14-06, 06:06 PM | ok, I think this fits better in here, so... could this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10073069&postcount=3) (courtesy of Phoenix00, as you'll notice) be used as well? I'm afraid there's a feat shortage if everything has to be used... but seriously, that's a lot of arrows. why settle for "death by one arrow" when you might be able to fire several of that type? It doesn't work like he has posted. The splitting enchantment only splits the arrow fired from the bow during mid-flight. The spell Arrowsplit splits the arrow in mid-flight as well. So his normal 6 attacks would split from the bow enchantment into 12 arrows, then the original 6 would split into the spells enchantment. Anyway the way he is trying to do it is not going to work. Reach spell makes touch spells (Arrowsplit) into a ranged touch spell so he can use Chain spell on it. However making the original spell into a Reach spell requires you to make a Ranged Touch attack roll to cast the spell on the arrow. If you do that then you have no attacks that round. If we switch his choice of feats around we might be able to do this. We still keep Arcane Thesis Arrowsplit, we change Chain spell to Delay spell, we change Reach Spell to Easy Metamagic Delay spell, we keep Maximize spell and Empower spell. Now what we do is burn up a ton of spell slots to cast 5 Delayed Maximized Empowered Arrowsplit spells that are staggered in rounds so they all go off at the same time. This will burn up 5 7th level spell slots. The round that they go off you cast your Maximized, Empowered Arrowsplit for the 6th arrow using a 6th level slot and now you fire all 6 enchanted arrows in that round. This should give you at least 36 arrows just from the castings of the spell onto the arrows fired. With the splitting enchantment on the bow you would only get 6 more arrows for a total of 42. Still your enemy is going to have a bad day. I hope you like making tons of attack rolls. Both this build with Delay spell and the other builds I made, in combat against each other would all depend on who went first. Just like most uber builds with tricks. |
| Dark1ord09-14-06, 06:15 PM | It doesn't work like he has posted.good catch. usually I just assume that builds in here work. ;) (actually, atm. I'm trusting you, which may or may not be wise... he-he.) This should give you at least 36 arrows just from the castings of the spell onto the arrows fired. With the splitting enchantment on the bow you would only get 6 more arrows for a total of 42. Still your enemy is going to have a bad day. I hope you like making tons of attack rolls. Both this build with Delay spell and the other builds I made, in combat against each other would all depend on who went first.lots of arrows with nasty stuff on them definitely sounds like a good assassin idea. it's not one-shot-one-kill, but it certainly gets the job done. I'm still not sure what to put on. guess the trick would be to build towards a single effect that's generally effective, or versatility in effects to put on for various situations. oh, and, let's just assume the assassin goes first against his target. preparation and all (what with all the dice to be rolled). ;) |
| Tath09-15-06, 12:56 AM | I think a Chameleon would work well with this. Lots of spellcasting options, stat bonuses, and good flavor for a sniper. Use Spellstoring arrows in conjunction with smiting spell, then use a Splitting bow so whatever arrow you fire is replicated and you are actually shooting two. Chameleon will also give you access to other nifty arrow spells like Hunter's Mercy. Don't forget to get nice arrows and a bow, and always use greater magic weapon. If you could figure out a way to take craft contingent spell (chameleon doesn't qualify), that would be great for super hard targets. Set up all kinda of buffs on a contingency and just say the word, giving yourself all the buffs immediately. a good build idea might be Rogue1/Fighter4/Chameleon10/Peerless Archer 5 Peerless archer gives you power attack for bows. I don't really have time to look into it though. |
