| kinglawngnome07-31-04, 11:10 PM | this build is entirely about versatility. take a look before i explain it: Human Fighter 1 Str: 18 Dex:16 Con: 14 Int:8 Wis: 8 Cha: 8 Feats: EWP (Greatspear), EWP (Bladed Gauntlets), Two-Weapon Fighting Greatspear +5 2d6+6 x3 crit 10 ft reach Bladed Gauntlets +5 or +3/+3 1d6+4 or 1d6+4/1d6+2 18-20/x2 Now as he stands he can easily switch from reach damage guy to two weapon fighting. at second level (hes going straight fighter, unless anyone has any suggestions otherwise) he takes combat reflexes, and at 3rd hold the line (my dm loves power lungers with rhino hide) from then on he takes WF, GWF,IC, WS, and GWS for both of his weapons, with quickdraw added in as a prereq for a feat my dm is allowing me to make (see below), and of course ITWF and GTWF. Basically, he has 19 feats, and except for combat reflexes or hold the line, they are for different modes. Are there any feats not up there that would help this guy out? any sort of prestige class? THE FEAT: Scorpions Fury (weapon style feat) Prereq: WF (any reach weapon besides spiked chain and lucerne hammer), WF (any light Weapon), Quickdraw, BaB +6 When you charge with a reach weapon in which you are focused in and hit, you may roll your damage normally, then drop your weapon, continue your charge for another 5 ft, draw a light weapon with which you are focused in, and make another attack. Feat Progression (for those interested): 2 Combat Reflexes 3 Hold the Line 4 WF (greatspear) 6 WF (bladed gauntlets) 6 ITWF 8 Quick Draw 9 Scorpion's Fury 10 IC (bladed gauntlets) 12 IC (greatspear) 12 GTWF 14 GWF (bladed gauntlets) 15 GWF (greatspear) 16 WS (bladed gauntlets) 18 WS (greatspear) 18 GWS (bladed gauntlets) 20 GWS (greatspear |
| catharz07-31-04, 11:23 PM | I think you'd to a lot better with a lance. |
| kinglawngnome07-31-04, 11:32 PM | the lance is good for when i charge, however, as i said, my dm is power charging happy, so i like the greatspear for it double damage vs charging opponents ability. at 3rd level, when my dm first starts using power lunging full orc barbarians (power attack is a prereq for powerlunge) ill get 4 attacks off if they power lunge at me if i ready an action |
| catharz08-01-04, 03:12 AM | With Quickdraw you can just hold the spear until you want to charge, then drop it as a free action and draw the lance. |
| kinglawngnome08-01-04, 03:20 AM | however, later ill be stuck buying 4 magic weapons. i'd rather just stick to having 3. |
| Merbeast08-01-04, 05:14 AM | At low levels, I doubt you'll have access to anything that you can walk around with to scabbard a lance. I'm sure there is some magical gizmo somewhere that will let you do it, but otherwise, I doubt you'll want to walk around with a lance at your side or on your back. |
| kinglawngnome08-01-04, 06:16 AM | heh, another good point. i always keep my bladed gauntlets drawn (duh) and i keep my greatspear across my back, ready to be drawn when needed. having a lance poking out of somewhere just doesn't seem to fit. |
| Caterane08-01-04, 05:18 PM | A lance can be put into a special - nonmagical :) - device on your horse. No one carries a lance around. |
| rilem08-01-04, 05:38 PM | If your DM likes chargers so much, why not take Sidestep Charge and Stand Still (both are from Psionic Handbook but are general feats; they don't require psi abilities). I don't like weapon focus and weapon specialization, all they do is tie you to those weapons. What if you find something better? Fighters should use their feats to enhance their flexibility, not constrain it. I'd include some barbarian levels and the snow tiger berserker feat, which will let you charge and make a full attack with those gauntlets. Also search for snow savant's battle-gauntlet trick, which lets you make a mechanically-equivalent bladed gauntlet using only martial weapons. |

| kinglawngnome08-05-04, 10:53 AM | first of all, i rarely have a horse, as its a prime target for a npc or wildbeast. second of all, im not mounted, so a lance does nothing for me beside free up a featand lower my damage from 2d6 to 1d8. third of all, IMO, a fighter should work on improving his ways to deal damage, not adding more to them. fyi, the guy has a speed reduction, so spring attack isn't so useful, and one attack doesn't help, so i have no need for it. i dont have the int to take expertise, slicing away improved disarm and trip. third of all, sorry i didn't mention this before, but ever since i made a psychic warrior that could have 250 strength my dm has not allowed psionics at the table. AT ALL. this includes magical bonuses, feats, and (obviously) classes. |
| PhoenixInferno08-05-04, 11:13 AM | Isn't adding more ways to hurt/maim/kill your opponent better than hitting harder? If you stay versatile, you'll have plenty of options. I mean, how many times can you charge an opponent in battle? What you've got here is a One Trick Pony and if your DM decides to screw you, there are things he can do like use Sidestep Charge, or just set for the charge. Besides, that Weapon Style feat isn't even THAT great - you'd be better off getting potions/oils of Lion's Charge to get pounce - full attack on a charge is WAY better than 2. |

I think this feat does too much all at once. Here's a tweak that might work better for your purposes: Prereq: WF (any piercing reach weapon), WF (any gauntlet or unarmed), Improved Unarmed Strike, BAB +6 Benefit: When you hit with charge attack using a piercing reach weapon, you can continue moving forward (as a 5-ft step forward) and make an additional unarmed or gauntlet attack at your BAB +2 (for charging). |
