A stupid rules question [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-15-05, 01:38 AM This is a super-easy question (I hope):

If you take a transformational PrC (DD, Walker in the Wastes, Acolyte of the Skin, etc) and end up as a Half-Dragon, Dry Lich or other template with a (substantial) LA, do you assume that LA even though you're around 15th or so level?

The reason I ask is that as I understand it, if you were to complete the ritual to become a Lich you take on its +4 LA or if you get transformed into a vampire you get stuck with the hefty +7. Does the fact that you went through a 10 level PrC mitigate the imposition of LA?

I believe it's an effective half-dragon template, as every ability is repeated in that class feature or in the other features of the Dragon Disciple. I'm not 100% certain, but I'd say no. I think the same is also the case of Acolyte of the Skin, though I haven't seen Walker in the Wastes at all.

This is the benefit of taking it over 10 levels -- those levels provide similar benefits through normal advancement, rather than an amazing load of abilities with no hit dice added to balance things out.

05-15-05, 02:08 AM I believe the effective LA has already been figured into the prc. So when taking the full 10 lvs of dragon disciple, you do not have a +3 LA on top of it to contend with.

That is correct. You've actually spent more levels on the dragon disciple to gain the benefits on the template than you would have if you just took it normally. The balancing is done through the prc's progression itself
