| doobiusPortugal10-27-05, 08:50 PM | Hi guys. My wizard has just died to a wraith (coming from the ground, that *****) and due to the level loss and damage he departed very suddenly. So, being tired of dying even when in the back of the party (the DM must have a special place in his "heart" *cough* *cough* for me), I wanted to create a character that had good saves and good AC... I don't mind not casting spells (in fact, I prefer not to, as my other three late characters were spellcasters and a bard  ), or even don't hit enemies to much, I just don't want to die to the first thing that decides I'm his next-to-be favorite meal or vehicle to spawning. So, what I was thinking of was creating a character that had good saves and good AC (not mentioning HP, of course), and cannot be good, and preferably not chaotic evil :D, because the party is evil, or acts like it. My stats are: STR - 15 DEX - 12 CON - 17 INT - 12 WIS - 12 CHA - 15 and I can swap only two of them. We're 6th lvl, and I was thinking in Paladin of Tiranny with a battle plate, but the question arises... what about my touch AC??? That got me worrying, and I wished to know about anything (items, classes, races) that could improve the character as well that touch AC... Thanks for your help... as you can see, it is badly needed... |

Then go with a fun combo of Bear Warrior and Deepwarden. Tel us what books you can use, that could open up some interesting possibilities. If your DM is really open, be a Dwarf Divine Minion (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mb/20050209a) of one of the evil gods. Take your levels of Deepwarden, and once you hit BAB +8, get some levels of Primeval [FB]. Don't forget to buy Wild armor and shield. |

| doobiusPortugal10-27-05, 09:32 PM | oh, we can use most of the books. the requisite is that they are exclusively 3.5, and of course, anything we do must be pre-approved by the DM... so... just 2 questions: where can i find deepwarden and dwarf paragon? (I have almost all the 3.5 books) |
| PhoenixInferno10-27-05, 09:38 PM | Deepwarden - Races of Stone. Also available on the Wizards site. Dwarf Paragon - Unearthed Arcana |

If you're making a character purely to avoid death, paladin or hex will give you a bonus to ALL your saves, the better your charisma, the better. The Paladin can heal himself in Oh **** moments; the Hex can curse his powerful enemies to prevent Oh **** moments. The Occult Slayer provides awesome defense against spells. Warforged constructs are immune to many many thinks, so are monks, and a warforged monk, well, surely you've heard of them by now. Drow and some other creatures get SR built-in; at higher levels, the LA is far far cheaper than trying to somehow buy or craft SR 25 with gold. Improved Toughness from CW gives more HP, Luck of Heroes from Faerun gives +1 to all saves, and weapons that can disarm or trip are never a bad idea. The spiked chain can do both, it even gets a bonus to the disarm, and it's a 1handed weapon meaning you can own and trick out a good shield in your other hand. Only downside is you need Exotic Weapon Proficiency. If you're going for a dwarf race of any kind, Dwarven Defender gets insane defensive abilities; the flavor text basically says "the Dwarven Defender is akin to a living wall that happens to also wield a weapon". They have good saves, special defensive abilities, DR, and a d12 hit die. If your DM is nice, he or she may let you treat Toughness and Improved Toughness as interchangeable to qualify for the class. |

| doobiusPortugal10-28-05, 02:28 PM | this is getting great, guys. thank you all, really. I'm going to follow this sequence (more or less) gold dwarf (+1 vs abeerations is a bonus at this level), LE 1st level - hexblade, feat: Wild talent 2nd level - hexblade 3rd level - ?????? 4th level - fighter (so I can take Heavy Armor optimization - you'll understand why... :D ) 5th level - paladyn of tyranny 6th level - paladyn of tyranny (deflective armor - oh yeah, armor bonus to touch AC... hehehe). so, my only doubt is at 3rd level: is hex 3 worth it? or should I start fighter at 3rd, so I can take another feat from it (I'm breaking commandment VI, by the way :weep: ) if so, what feat should I choose? or I'm completely at the wrong track, here, and I should take another class (attention to the multiclass exp penalty), maybe dwarf paragon (saves up levels next, if I am to take it in the future). What do you think that can be done to improve this? Am I building this right? Thanks again for all your help! |

If you take Mirror Image as one of your spells your AC means a lot less and with Mettle and Cha to Save vs Spells you are very powerful especially vs a single opponent. PS: The Paladin of Tyranny would give you heavy armor proficiency so no need for that fighter level. |
| FriendlyBiscuit10-28-05, 07:50 PM | An extra level of hexblade or an extra level of fighter will both benefit you, and they're roughly equal in benefits. If somehow, you have a wide spread of equally-good ability scores, you could also throw in a level of monk. Another thread on this board describes why monk goes well with Hex. |
