How does a cleric gain a third domain from the beginning? I understand four feats at 1st level -- one regular, one human, two from taking those penalty things in Unearthed Arcana, but where does the third domain come from?

A cloistered cleric (from Unearthed Arcana) gets the Knowledge domain as a bonus domain. That's one way.

There is an epic feat which lets you gain an extra domain. Also, there are a few prcs which grant a bonus domain. :)

Other than Cloistered Cleric, you usually get the third domain from prestige classes.

Complete Divine has a few, Divine Disciple (Player's Guide to Faerun) has one of choice, the Draconomicon has a couple....Contemplative and Divine Disciple are the only ones I can think of offhand that give you a choice in the domain.

I have a cohort who has 5 domains despite him really only using the healing domain since he's a Radiant Servant.

A lawful good elf folower of Bahamut could have 8 domains by 11th level.

1 Cloistured Cleric: Combat Casting
2 CC
3 CC: Skill Focus (Knowledge: Religion)
4 CC
5 CC
6 Divine Oracle:
7 Divine Oracle: (mainly for evasion)
8 Seeker of the Misty Isle
9 Church Inquisitor:
10 War Priest
11 Contemplative

Protection, Glory, Knowledge, Inquisistion, Travel, Luck, Oracle, and Nobility

This can't been done from 1st level but if you are using splatbooks you might want to look in the Champions of Darkness book for the Ravenloft setting (tis a Sword and Sorcery book).

It has a feat called Extra Domain. It needs Wis 18+, Knowledge (Religion) 10+, and Divine Caster Level of 7+. It lets you choose another of you gods domains or any domain if you already have all of the ones that belonged to your god.

Not WOTC but I hope it helps.

so cloistered cleric doesn't grant a bonus domain? it just makes you pick knowledge as one of your domains?

No, it grants the Knowledge Domain as a bonus domain. So you have three... whatever you would normally take + the Knowledge Domain.

No, I meant that the option I was presenting could not be done from first level. It was not meant as a blanket statement, just a qualifer for what I was presenting.
