A use for the overpriced spellbook [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-15-04, 10:30 PM Just a minor thing I noticed, but it is fairly cost-effective for a 4th level wizard to sell his spellbook to buy an Aureon's spellshard (6,000 gp) at 4th level. While starting gold for 4th level is only 5,400 gp, the wizard's spellbook is worth 2,000 gp on the open market by that point (assuming he started with an 18 Int).

Invest the spells into the Spellshard before giving the book away, and you're set! Except you should buy another spellbook (100 gp). Find something worthwhile to do with the extra 1,300 gp.

As you level up, scribe the two free spells into the book, and then sell it when you like (you've already got the spells in the Spellshard).

10k gp may not be a lot at level 20, but I'm not going to throw it away!

Its a Blessed book lite - 1/2 cost, 1/2 the spells stored. Its also a chunk of stone, making it a bit strionger then the average spellbook.

So ya, it basically does both of the above (maybe 500 spells max?).

Its from Eberron.

11-15-04, 11:01 PM 500 pages is half of a boccob blessed book, but a spell takes 1 page / spell level. So its equivalent in pages number to 5 spellbook, at 6000 its a fair price, assuming you dont have to pay for scribing.

Where is that shard from?

And how do you calculte the value of a spell book you try to sell?

Check the PHB. Its # of filled pages * 50 gp.

And the Spellshard is basically 50,000 gp worth of scribing.

11-15-04, 11:25 PM I really like the fact its harder to hurt than a book.
Its also based on the same idea as a boccob blessed book/2, so if its really that close to an existing (core) item, my DM will surely allow it.
Since its half the cost of the book you can get it earlier also.

I just spent near 3000 gold for spells and scribing at level 5, was the last store for a long time, so I got all I could get ;) And next time instead of waiting to have 6k+ to craft a book, I can just craft one of those shards, Ill look it up.
