| Joachim06-24-05, 06:53 PM | We are starting through Dungeon's new Age of Worms AP (in our long-running FR campaign), and we put together a group each modeled after a Marvel Comics Superhero. My character is based off of the X-Man "Angel". Currently, I am planning on taking him 20 levels as a Favored Soul, but I am kind of uncertain as to feat selections. Stats, using a 32 point buy, are: Aasimar Favored Soul of Tyr Str 14 Dex 12 Con 14 Int 12 Wis 16 Cha 16 Trait (from UA) - Quick (+10 speed, -1 hp per level) Flaw - Inattentive (-3 to Spot/Listen) Feat 1st - Celestial Bloodline (RoF) Feat 1st - Outsider Wings (RoF) We are currently 2nd level, and coming up on 3rd. Stat raises are going to be split between Wis and Cha...4th/8th to Cha and 12th/16th to Wis. My feats from this point on are roughly going to be: Feat 3rd - Improved Flight (from average to good) Feat 6th - Sudden Extend Feat 9th - Sudden Maximize Feat 12th - Spell Penetration Feat 15th - Greater Spell Penetration Feat 18th - Sudden Empower Spell selection will be primarily healing at the lower levels, then move towards more offense at levels 10+. Does this character sound like one that can be effective at the higher levels? He seems kind of like a 'tweener' or a utility character. What do you think? EDIT: I am really looking for ideas regarding feat selection more than anything else. |
| Tweedledope06-24-05, 09:19 PM | If you're going 20 levels of Favored Soul why are you taking flaws in order to get Wings? You already get them. Oh, and if you're playing in Forgotten Realms I've got a really good build for you including the favored soul. Favored Soul 8/Witch Hunter 2/Wind Walker 10 This build was originally put out by a guy named Minotaur. It has awesome BAB, Full Favored Soul Spellcasting, and near perfect synergy. I love that build. Your Diety has to be Shaundakul though due to the Wind Walker requirement. Favored Soul - Complete Divine Witch Hunter - Oriental Adventures Wind Walker - Faiths and Pantheons Try it out, it's great. -=Tweedledope=- |
| Bard of DorAr06-24-05, 09:30 PM | Not entirely relevent for power wise, but.. Inattentive is horrible for a character based on Warren. The guy has eyes like an eagle much like the rest of his adapted anatomy. The +10 Speed / -1 HP works as he's a touch more fragile than most (hollow bones). I have to go with the others and saying not to take the whole 20 levels of Favored Soul if you're taking wings from the get go... Beyond that. Quill blast from CD fits his wing knives from when he had the metal wings... the rapier's magical on it's own. He needs quick healing from somewhere as well. But really other than the poor choice of a flaw it doesn't look too bad. |

I wanted them at 1st level, and this was the quickest way to get them. Most games that I play in start at 1st level. Bard: I took Innattentive simply from a powergaming perspective. Considering that aasimar get +2 to Spot/Listen, innattentive seemed to hurt the least. But I see your point. As far as the fast healing goes, he can cast cure spells. Is there a faster version of healing than that :) ? |
| Kurama Youko06-26-05, 12:33 PM | im gonna keep it simple and actually give you what you asked for. I'm proud someone else can see that being a Favored Soul shouldnt have to boil down to what PrC can i jump into next. Aasimar right? Egh not my favorite choice for a Favored Soul, but then again usually only Human is for me... actually that works out type right if you consider Angel is a human who was born a mutant.. or realized his mutation later in life, in which a human who went favorite soul is sort doing, with his increased resistances, damage reduction and wings... oh well, its your character. The first list is more catered toward pulling off a holier than thou art type of character. 1st Spellcasting Prodigy (Favored Soul) 3rd Nimbus of Light 6th Holy Radiance 9th Consecrate Spell 12th Twin Spell 15th Daunting Presence 18th Sanctified Martial Strike note if you dont care about spellcasting prodigy for the bonus spells per day, switch it to Nymphs Kiss for extra skill points, a +2 to cha checks and +1 on saves vs spells and spell-like effects. Another possibility since you want to be Angel (That is if you know of his current ability to heal people through blood transfusions.) take Stigmata. Sudden Metamagic feats arent worth a Spontaneous casters time unless they are gotten for free. Hold a rod of your favorite meta magic feat in one hand and call it a day. This one is more of a melee thing 1st Spellcasting Prodigy (Favored Soul) 3rd Power Attack 6th Cleave 9th Improved Sunder 12th Combat Brute 15th Improved Bullrush 18th Diving Charge or Improved Flight Those feats work will with Rightous Might and Divine Power two spells every Favored Soul should have in there spells known slots. Speaking of spells, heres a composite of some of my favore spells for a 20th lv favored soul. 0th- Cure Minor Wounds, Guidance, Detect Magic, Light, Mending, Read Magic, Purify Food and Drink, Create Water, Detect Poison 1st- Protection from Evil, Divine Favor, Detect Evil, Command, Lantern Light, Ray of Hope 2nd- Elation, Cure Moderate Wounds, Silence, Deific Vengeance, Lastai's Caress, Consecrate 3rd- Daylight, Prayer, Searing Light, Affliction, Hearts Ease, Lesser Vigor Mass 4th- Cure Critical Wounds, Death Ward, Divine Power, Freedom of Movement, Restoration, Stars of Arvandor 5th- Crown of Flame, Commune, Dispel Evil, Planeshift, Dragon Breath, True Seeing 6th- Greater Dispel Magic, Heal, Cometfall, Visage of the Deity, Mass Frostburn, Word of Recall 7th- Mass Spell Resistance, Righteous Smite, Shield of the Archons, Fortunate Fate, Holy Word, Righteous Wrath of the Faithful 8th- Last Judgement, Mass Cure Critical Wounds, Earthquake, Planar Exchange Greater, Fire Storm 9th- True Resurrection, Gate, Miracle, Sublime Revelry if I had to work in any additional spells I'd say change whatever you need to work in Greater Magic Weapon and Magic Vestment... both last for hours, and they progress in strength with caster level. Another good spell is Death Throes, thats right just like the Balor ability. It last for hours as well and does 1d8 per cast level points of damage to everyone in a 30ft burst should you hit -10. Its in the Planar Handbook. |

| Khazra Reborn06-26-05, 03:53 PM | ok, id like to recomend half celestial over aasimir. Sure you take another +1La on top of what you have but your wings are free & you get awesome stat bonuses (overall i think the best of almost any template, total +20!), damage reduction, energy resistances, NA, SR, smite evil & spell-like abilites (which make you notice the 1 less spellcaster level then aasimir less). All for the stupidly low +2LA (i still cant believe they havent made half fiend 2LA yet.....) |

All for the stupidly low +2LA (i still cant believe they havent made half fiend 2LA yet.....) Come on what sane DM would allow half celestial at +2 LA..... I second the FS/witch hunter/windwalker build I played and it was awesome to play especially in a fearun setting. |
| Khazra Reborn06-26-05, 04:27 PM | i do..i just make half fiend +2LA also. Compared to some templates/races (anthromorphic, feral & half minotaur spring to mind) there not that powerful. Although, it makes me think maybe threnic should be +1La....... ANyway, if your DM allows it at +2La, half celestial rocks. |
| Kurama Youko06-26-05, 04:33 PM | Okay, let me be the first to point this out. Those Level Adjustments presented in the Book of Exalted Deeds are meant for Races who begin with Racial Hit Dice... the more racial hit dice the lower the LA for the Half Celestial Template. If you are a human or any other humanoid or creature that has no racial hit dice after taking your first class level the LA for a Half Celestial and Fiend is +4. Thank you, that was a kind reminder from your Sane rules interpreter. Also,... how come everyone on these boards tries to change your desired idea into their theres? Its one thing to post suggestions but the guy asked for a 20th lv Favored Soul, and only wanted Feat/Spell Suggestions. and unless your coming from Kara-Tur I dont see how any sane DM is gonna allow you to multiclass into Witch Hunter, specially considering the mechanics behind Oriental Adventurer. |

Its one thing to post suggestions but the guy asked for a 20th lv Favored Soul, and only wanted Feat/Spell Suggestions They said they more wanted feat selection then anything else. I dont think suggesting a different race is that far off suggestions wanted. taking this race will free up 3 feats whilst still achieveing his wings early on. Plus, a half celestial is just an aasimir on steroids with wings! |
| Kurama Youko06-26-05, 05:01 PM | Okay, I made a mistake. I looked over the BoeD again, and yes it is a +2 LA. But they clearly state in the 4th option to which it is mentioned that this option is for characters who dont want a huge array of abilities that normal celestials have. It seem if you use this option you dont gain the special abilities that are gained with progression through the levels that a normal half celestial gets. Meaning your SR wouldnt go up, it'd stay 12, or 11. I forget the base SR. You would only get the Spell-like ability of a creature with 1 hit dice. You'd gain everything else but thats it. It think that also means you'd only have DR/5 magic. |
| Joachim06-28-05, 12:16 AM | Curiously, what are the other Marvel characters in your group, and what are their classes? Remember, these are all just loosely based on Marvel characters, so show restraint: Sabretooth - Feral Human Barbarian (has Jotunbrud for extra flavor) Colossus - Goliath Cleric of Grumbar (Time and Metal, eventually can cast Iron Body) Nightcrawler - Shadow Walker Human Rogue (can use Dimension Door starting at 3rd level) Pyro - Fire Genasi Evoker Thing - Mineral Warrior Dwarf Fighter The DM let us use +1 ECL races, no more than that. I actually made all of the PCs at 1st level and we did a random draw to see who got which ones. I ended up with Angel, who actually was the weakest of the whole bunch, but that's ok considering that I am by far the worst powergamer in our group. |
| Joachim06-28-05, 12:18 AM | And for the record, we have already started playing, and I am a Favored Soul of Tyr. I can't switch to Shaundakul, or be for Kara-Tur, so that whole option is right out. |

If you are a human or any other humanoid or creature that has no racial hit dice after taking your first class level the LA for a Half Celestial and Fiend is +4. Actully you got it backwards. SInce the abilites from 1/2 celestial is based off of racial HD, Humans get the +2 LA and the races with Racial HD get the +4 LA. |
| Sieylianna06-28-05, 09:57 PM | Stats, using a 32 point buy, are: Aasimar Favored Soul of Tyr Str 14 Dex 12 Con 14 Int 12 Wis 16 Cha 16 Spell selection will be primarily healing at the lower levels, then move towards more offense at levels 10+. Wisdom only matters for the DCs of the spells you cast, which doesn't seem to be a big part of your plans. I'd have put the extra points into Intelligence. Ed |
| Kurama Youko06-29-05, 02:32 AM | Actully you got it backwards. SInce the abilites from 1/2 celestial is based off of racial HD, Humans get the +2 LA and the races with Racial HD get the +4 LA. in the 3.5 monster manual the half celestial presented indeed gains half celestial abilities based on its class hit dice as well as racial hit dice. |
