I'm almost positive I've seen a thread on this before, but my google-fu is weak. I noticed that an Aasimar can cast Sunlight 1/day as a SLA, which I believe qualifies for the casting requirement for Master of Radiance (Libris Mortis). It isn't the most powerful class, but the ability to fire off Sunbeams all willy nilly is quite spiffy.

Now, the whole point of starting with an Aasimar in the first place is so we don't need to start with cleric/druid/spirit shaman (which is obviously the most optimal), but what to use instead? And is such an alternate build even feasible (from an optimization standpoint)? Do note that Ur-priest is not an option since MoR requires non-evil alignment.

The skill requirements are a bit of a hassle, requiring both knowledge religion (5) and nature (8). And ideally, one would hope to get a caster level of 18 in order to max out the sunbeam ability. Accounting for your radiant aura and Practice Spellcaster, we'd only need a caster level of 13 to get that.

I was thinking Divine Crusader might be a nice way to take advantage of those caster increases. But that leaves a lot of "dead levels" for caster levels (I'm assuming the caster level is equal to class level; the text doesn't really say, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Randomly slapping things together, I got something like:
Aasimar 1/Paladin 4/Ranger 1/Pious Templar 2/Divine Crusader 1/Master of Radiance 5/Triadic Knight 6*
*Champions of Valor - advance casting 5/7, special mount, immunity to nausea/sicken/blindness/dazzle/fear

BAB 16, decent saves, max out Divine Crusader Casting (but only get a max caster level of 15, enough for 5 sunbeams), turn undead, mettle, Cha to spells and saves, the potential to persist Righteous Might if you really wanted to burn some feats, and thematically you're really really devoted to Torm (easiest one to meet the feat prereqs for). With LA buyoff, we can fit in the last level of TK for Threefold Smite, although personally I'd just put in a second level of Divine Crusader for better saves, then use one of the casting advancements to get 2nd level Pious Templar spells.

This looks decent overall, but I think it could be better. Any thoughts?

edit: had to fix up my prereqs

Sorry, Master of Radiance requires that you cast it as a divine spell.

hm...not to burst a bubble somewhere, but Master of Radiance states as a prerequisite: "able to cast daylight as a divine spell." Don't Aasimar get light, and as a sorcerer?

Nope, Aasimar got upgraded because simple Light spells are too easy to snuff out.

Also, the Sunbeam ability that masters of radiance get isn't limited by the caster level, but just by how much time you have. (which is 1 minute, or 10 beams, per aura use)

I thought being able to cast spells as SLAs qualified (doesn't it say that in CA somewhere?)... or is the sticking point here "as a divine spell"?

Ugh, reading it more carefully it's only a single sunbeam? Well geez, this PrC just become a whole lot more craptacular. :pbbbtt:

where is this? one of the 3.5 FR books, I assume?

yup - there's a reason why the class increases divine spellcasting.

I'd presume the MM3.5. Here's the SRD link: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/planetouched.htm#aasimar

Heh, don't feel bad. Pretty much all of my CO ideas this week have been totally shot down. I should just stick to my reference threads
