Ok new campaign starting up, I'm the DM, but the party is small so I'm giving them a DMPC to control I'll use as plot hooks, but they'll be able to use him ingame. The entire game is going to be almost completely against Aberrations or at least after a level up or two.
Level 7, 34 Point Buy, Standard Gold (19,000)
I was looking at the Topaz Guardian to make him good against Aberrations.
I was considering taking a level of Paladin and adding a level of fighter. Considering adding Favored Power Attack and/or Close Quarters Fighting
This is the build so far. Other members are a Cleric, some kind of Arcanist(player hasn't come back with the details yet), and a rogue.
Halvar Marth: Male Human
Ranger 1/Paladin 4/ Topaz guardian 2

Abilities:
Str 16
Dex 12
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 12
Cha 16(+1 from level)

Feats:
1 Quick Recovery
H Power Attack
Rng1: Track
3Weapon Focus(Longsword)
6 Divine Might

I'm looking to optimize him just because I want to throw some great encounters at them and this guy can hold off the enemies so the actual PCs can escape if it comes to that.

Books:Core, Completes, Races of Stone, Lords of Madness.

You're the DM. If you want a DMPC to 'hold off the enemies to let the PCs escape,' you're dealing with a story action, not anything which has to do with optimization.

Just don't steal their thunder. :P
I'd drop the Divine Might and all the other damage-enhancing stuff. Just focus on defense.

If he were to have to 'hold off the enemies' that would be the player choice not mine. They are the ones in control. And for the record I'm only making this character because I was asked to by players and I do think they need another PC, but we are unable to find another person and everyone agrees if they make the PC it'll take away from roleplaying. I'm only looking for suggestions, I probably won't take the most optimized builds because I don't want to steal thunder.

Try Ranger1/Psion4/Sanctifed Mind6/Illithid Slayer9, in that order.

Your best function will be forming a physical barrier between the two spellcasters and your foes, and flanking with thr rogue.
To this end I'd consider Spiked Chain or Guisarme + Spiked Gauntlet.. You can't take Combat Expertise Improved Trip (too bad), but you might be able to take Stand Still. Goad [CW] would be an awesome feat for this character, with the high charisma.

Then again, being the DM you can choose who the NPCs attack anyway...

Ok just by the negativity towards DMPC, I'm going to change this thread into a thread asking for suggestions for my players to become master aberrations slayers.

What feats, builds, anything would be helpful?

OR I'm just going to let this die.
