Ability drain is bad [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi there. I'm currently playing in an epic campaign and I constantly face one major problem. Things we seem to fight have ability damage/drain attacks and it's really starting to get bad.

That's why I'm here. I need either a spell or item (if spell, something that can be made permanent) that gives immunity to ability drain and ability damage. We DO play with custom items, so if it's possible to make a custom item to do this, I just need a price.

The reason why I'm asking you guys this is because I'm sure plenty of people who are here are looking for a way to become immune to this (since, in the words of a Wizard's Rules Support: "Not many things make you immune to ability damage."). It also seems as something that should be here because if there are ways, I'm sure people could use them in tricks and builds.

Anyways, thanks in advance,
Comman8

Soulfire armour enchantment from BoED. It's a +4 enchantment.

Makes you 100% immune to ability drain/damage and negative levels.

A continuous slotted item of Sheltered Vitality (3rd level Cleric spell from Libris Mortis) will make you immune to fatigue, exhaustion, ability damage, and ability drain for 60,000 gp.

Spell level(3) x Caster level(5) x 2(min/level duration) x 2,000gp

Someone better at this can check my math. A slotless item that did this would cost 120k.

making an item with the "Kiss of the Vampire" spell from the Spell Compendium would do the job also. All the rules for making costomized items are in the DMG. I have worked out a base price using the rules from the DMG:

"Cape of the Vampire," basically a cape with the "Kiss of the Vampire" spell purminantly cast on on it.
Base price: 187,000gp

Anything that makes you undead or a construct will make you immune to ability damage/drain as an extraordinary ability. Most other suggestions here are magical so you could still be damaged by extraordinary ability damage/drain when in an antimagic field or deadmagic zone. Unfortunately AMF and dead magic seem to show up a lot more often in epic games, at least the ones I've played in.

Necropolitan is the easiest one, already listed above.

Another template that is a good one is Voidmind, in MM3, but it's +3 LA. However it gives some other nice immunities and abilities including an additional attack (tentacle) every round.

No one has said so, but just to clarify: being undead does not make you immune to Int, Wis or Cha damage.

Well first, HOW are you getting ability drained? If its poison, and it usually is, Heroes feast is your friend. But address the How, and you dont have to worry about the what.

Right. But it does make you immune to all Ability Drain.

Personally, I think Soulfire armor is the way to go. No DM is going to argue that its broken, and for 25k, you don't have to worry about half of the methods the big bads have to kill you. 3.5 compatible too.

Hmmm, doesn't seem to prevent ability drain though... Just energy drain and all death effects...

Thanks for all the replies.

Let me take a quick second to reply to as many of them as I can.

Templates: Can't do, char's already made and can't be changed.

Soulfire Armor: It doesn't say in it's description that it provides protection against ability drain or damage.

Sheltered Vitality: This is awsome, exactly the kind of thing I was looking for! THANKS!

Kiss of the Vampire: It sounds interesting, but I have many items already that heal me (with cure/heal). So being undead would cause problems. Also, the idea of being "turned" isn't that appealing. Thanks though.

To help you out, most of the time we either get reduced stats by monsters ability (not poison or disease abilities) or by spells that specifically reduce stats. Since it's an epic game, poison doesn't really do much to us anymore (especially since my char has a fort save of 45 and doesn't fail on a natural 1... yay steadfast determination!).

The reason I'm not looking for ways to boost my saves are mainly because of one of two things:

1) There is no save
2) The save is so high there's no chance we could make it reliably.

Oh, and just for anyone who wants to know, this is my current char/build.

Dwarf Fighter 6/Occult Slayer 5/Exotic Weapon Master 1/Deep Warden 2/Weapon Master 11

(Note: Before you ask, yes, I have both exotic weapon master and normal weapon master. We usually play that Weapon Master wasn't turned into Exotic in 3.5).

Hope this helps, and keep the ideas coming!

Templates: Can't do, char's already made and can't be changed. The templates mentioned are acquired templates, meaning they change a person through some kind of ritual. You're thinking of inherited templates which are passed on from parent to offspring. Liches are acquired, half-dragons are inherited.

But if the Sheltered Vitality suits your purposes, and you can get a continuous magical item of that, that is probably the easiest way to go. 60,000 isn't too hard to come up with in an epic game. But again, it won't work in an antimagic field, and magic items can be disjunctioned.
