The first way is that it is talking about 1/2 of your Abjurant Champion levels and the second is 1/2 your total level. Even if it's the first way, by fifth level you'll still be able to cast as many quickened Abjuration spells of 3rd and lower you could want. Assuming that my first read was right, is the ability to cast quickened Abjuration spells that powerful? |
| Daemoniss10-31-06, 10:10 AM | Your first is correct, its caps up at 3th lvl abjurations. 2.5 rounded up. |
| Drill_Sgt10-31-06, 03:04 PM | is it that powerful? well, round one of combat, you cast sheild which give YOU 9 ac, AND cast protection from evil, for another 7... |

It only increases the AC of spells that provide an Armor or Shield Bonus. So Shield is in, Protection from Evil is out. There are many that have house-ruled this to apply to all spells that grant such bonuses, or house-ruled Mage Armor and similar magics into the Abjuration school. That said, it is still an extremely powerful and useful ability. The Abjurant Champion should really require a bit more. I'd suggest making it require Spell Focus (Abjuration) and proficiency in all Martial Weapons at the very least. Perhaps some skill rank requirements as well. Right now the entry requirements are a joke, as the only painful requirement is Combat Casting -- for any race that gets a martial proficiency for free. Seems a bit lame and biased towards elves. Yes, that's correct, it only has two requirements all Wizards don't get; Combat Casting and profiency in one martial weapon. The other requirement, +5 BAB, is something every Wizard gets at 10th level (perhaps 11th if he poorly timed another prestige class with medium or poor BAB progression). I can't think of ANY Wizard build that wouldn't spend a feat to take this class, unless they just happen to be the wrong race and so don't get a martial prof for free. Afterall, the benefits are great for any Wizard: d10 HD, good BAB, Will save boost (always nice), and the special abilities on top of this. Btw, the d10 HD is just like a +3 HP boost/level for a Wizard, on average, so in 5 levels that's very close to improved toughness (+15 overall), at least pre-epic. Add the special abilities on top of this....and wow! -Drachasor |
