So I think I figured out a way to be able to cast 3 spells AND make a single melee attack all in one round. The first step is to level up as a Duskblade, at least level 13. You will then need 1 level of Havoc Mage (PrC in MiniHB p. 20). At level 13, the Duskblade allows you to cast any touch spell you know as part of a full attack action, and the spell affects each target you hit in melee that round. The bolded part is the important part to remember. So here is spell number 1. At level 5, the Duskblade allows you to cast one spell each day as a swift action, so long as the casting time of the spell is 1 standard action or less. So this would be the 2nd spell, and it is a swift action. Now the Havoc Mage has the Battlecast ability which allows him to take a full-round action to attack and cast a spell. The spell must be an arcane spell he knows of 2nd level or lower with a casting time of 1 standard action or less. When using his Battlecast ability, a Havoc Mage may cast spells requiring somatic components even if he has no free hands. Using Battlecast does not provoke and attack of opportunity. This is our 3rd spell, plus the attack... So basically you use the Battlecast feat to take a full-round action to attack and cast a spell (1), and as part of that full round action you use your arcane channeling to cast a touch spell through your weapon (2) and then finish it off with a QuickCast (swift action) spell. Now, I am not sure, but since Quicken Spell metamagic feat isn't technically a swift action, you might be able to sneak one of these in as an extra spell. Not sure if this would work at all in conjunction with something like Whirlwind Attack or even Lion's Pounce. Seems like it would work well with a Power Attacking True Striker :) So, thoughts? Do I have something here? Can it be expanded upon? |

The Havoc Mage's Battlecast is not part of a full attack action, it requires a full round action, meaning you can't do anything else. The Duskblade's ability requires that you use the full attack action, which you can't do if you are already using a full round action to Battlecast. Both abilities can't be used at the same time. Maybe you could use a swift action spell, Battlecast to attack and cast Greater Celerity, and then use your new full round action to use the Duskblade's ability. I haven't looked at the particulars yet though, so this may not be kosher (and you'll be dazed next round). |

| Andrew06-24-06, 06:36 PM | I had a similar idea for an Enlightened Fist that burns through 5 spells in a round and gets a full flurry attack, but it isn't sustainable. You swerve out of Enlightened Fist to take two levels of Kensai, and you imbue both your fists as +1 spell storing weapons, and pick up Arcane Strike along the way. 1. Normal spell, cast through Enlightened Fist's Arcane Fist ability. 2. Swift spell of your choice. 3. Arcane Strike on the hand you use for most of your attacks. 4. Spell stored in hand #1. 5. Spell stored in hand #2. It's really a one-trick build, though, and you can do the same idea with basic spell-storing weapons. The attack bonus really suffers from all the multiclassing, as does the caster level. It only looks powerful when combined with spells that are generally regarded as too strong for their level, such as wraithstrike or Frostburn's shivering touch spells (9d6 dex damage!). |
