Abusing Arcane Hierophant's Animal Familiar with spells. [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-10-05, 11:56 PM I have been looking at the Arcane Hierophant PrC from 'Races Of The Wild' and I was wondering if anyone else had had the same thoughts that I have had using the following wording found in the PHB.

1. " A master and his familiar can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the familiar’s type (magical beast)."

2. "Additionally, the druid may cast a spell with a target of "You" on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself. A druid and her animal companion can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion’s type (animal)."

I have been looking at various spells that would be abusable for this sort of thing, and I was wondering whether anyone else had any ideas.

Enlarge Person

If you cast this spell upon yourself, you can share the spell with your animal companion to get the equivalent of Animal Growth. A substandard one I know, but it improves the reach of your pet at low levels, and gives it those lovely AOO.

Alter Self

I'm not 100% sure about this, but would changing your pet Ape into a Dire Bear give it extra Natural Armour? Or other types of creatures to get other types of benefits.

Mage Armour & Shield

Those benefits are already apparent.

Transformation

Pop this on your animal companion instead of casting it on yourself, for a lovely increased melee buff. Pet doesn't even need to stay within 5ft if you let it have teh buff instead.

Expeditious Retreat

If you want to speed up your pet for tactical combat.

False Life

Keep your companion alive longer.

Then there is also the other line of useful spells. The touch based combat spells. Why not have your animal companion deliver them for you.

Vampiric Touch

Harm

Hundreds of potential uses. Plus unlike normal familiars if they die, you can get another in 24 hours with no experience loss.
