For some reason the search is down so I can't find information on this topic:
Building a High AC

If you guys can kind of make this thread a compilation of ways to build up AC, lets say past 40, please post them. All WoTC stuff is cool.

Kind of curious is all. Thanks ahead for any replies.

Check the "King: AC" link in my signature for a build with AC over 120.

Slight problem. "past 40" is too low. Most builds that have that just because they figured they might as well

Master Po (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5381824&postcount=723) has an AC of 55. He is a character I think I might use as an NPC. The build uses some stuff from Rokugan and Dragon magazine, and AC was only one of the things I focused on. I used a really high point buy making him, but he'd work just fine with a lower one, since he really only relies on Int and Dex.

Mystic Wanderer is in Magic of Faerun.

I'll try with an evil build, since everyone else will use the Saint template:
LE Gloura (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20031003e), Venerable age
Overwhelming Attack Monk 2/ Fighter 2/ Blackguard 3/ Arcane Duelist (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20030224a) 2/ Mystic Wanderer 1/ Psion 1

32 pointbuy:
Str 9 (8 base, +6 Enhancement, -6 Age)
Dex 32(18 base, +10 Racial, +6 Enhancement, +4 Inherent, -6 Age)
Con 12 (8 base, +4 Racial, +6 Enhancement, -6 Age)
Int 17 (8 base, +6 Enhancement, +3 Age)
Wis 21 (8 base, +4 Racial, +6 Enhancement, +3 Age)
Cha 42 (18 base, +6 Racial, +6 Enhancement, +4 Levels, +5 Inherent, +3 Age)

Feats:
1. Dodge
3. Mobility
6. Iron Will
8. Power Attack, Improved Unarmed Strike
9. Improved Bull Rush
9. Ascetic Mage
10. Cleave
11. Improved Sunder
12. Combat Expertise
15. Improved Maneuverability
18. Improved Combat Expertise
18. Psionic Dodge

Equipment of Note:
Bracers of Armor +8
Amulet of Natural Armor +5
Belt of Magnificense +6
Manual of Dex +4
Tome of Cha +5
Monk's Belt
Monk's Tattoo
Dorje of Force Screen (manifester level 5)
Dorje of Defensive Precognition (manifester level 4)
two +5 Defending Daggers

AC Bonuses:
10 Base
+16 Profane, Mystic Wanderer, 42 Cha
+16 Unnamed, Arcane Duelist, 42 Cha
+16 Unnamed, Monk with Ascetic Mage, 42 Cha
+2 Unnamed, effective Monk level 11
+16 Deflection, Gloura racial ability, 42 Cha
+8 Armor, Bracers of Armor
+5 Shield, Augmented Force Screen
+11 Dex
+5 Natural, Amulet of Natural Armor
+5 Unnamed, Defending Dagger
+5 Unnamed, Defending Dagger
+3 Insight, Augmented Defensive Precognition
+10 Dodge, Combat Expertise
+1 Dodge, Dodge feat
+1 Dodge, Psionic Dodge feat
Total AC: 130

Also note that this character has a Fly speed of 80 feet with Perfect maneuverability. It is highly unlikely that anything at all will even reach him, much less beat his AC. There should be plenty of cash left over for other equipment as well.

Damn, you people are nuts!!
I love these ideas. How/Could these builds actually work for a "regular" PC in a campaign beginning at level 1? I notice that a few of you used things like Tomes and Bracers included within the "build".

As I am sure you know nothing in the way of magic/loot/weapons are ever guaranteed and so builds can always come out incorrectly.

I guess I should fess up. I want to build this guy (whoever it will be) for an upcoming campaign. I once used an exalted monk with the VOP feats with a level 1 AC 22, no armor, but that campaign didn't take off. Basically just don't want to get touched by a DM who starts out well then usually goes for a TPK around level 5.

Thanks again for your replies. Good stuff.

The Duelist out of the DMG can get a pretty high AC due to their 7th level ability: Elaborate parry, combined with int to AC. The class isn't a powerhouse, but it's alright if you're into that kind of character.

Whoops, forgot about one of the best damage dealing high AC guys out there: The Deepwarden Bearwarrior. You get con to AC, and when you rage you get very high con = very high AC while retaining the ability to deal out some serious damage.

Dwarf Barbarian 1/Ranger 3/Fighter 1/Deepwarden 2/Bearwarrior 5/Warshaper 4

is a very good build. Take the Extra Rage feat and you're good to go. You can finish off with anything you like, really. Bearwarrior levels, whatever.

The Deepwarden Master of Many Forms is even better for this...more flexibility than the Bear Warrior, and access to even higher Con forms.

Heck, at level 7 MMF, he can shift into a Shambling Mound, and wind up with as much Con as he wants. ;)

You can make a core only build with:

Halfling rogue3/ranger2/fighter2/monk3/duelist10
Dex:20, Int:16, Wis:17 starting stats

Can have an
AC: 23 at 1st level
AC: 46 at 20th level

Thats with NO magic!

Given what a character can buy or get by 20th level you should be able to have a 90+ AC. Core only.

Not too shabby.

Halfling Outrider gets a great AC.

When mounted you get extra bonuses to AC
Defense Riding from the class gives you an additional +4 to AC.

I know it's not amazing powergaming but here goes...

Pal 5
Halfling Outrider 10

Dex 18 +2 (20) +4 by levels 16 (24) Glove of Dex Plus 6 (30)
Bracers of Armor +8
Ring of Protection +5
Amulet of Natural Armor +5
Mount Bonus +5
Size +1 (Not sure but I think so)

10+10 Dex+8 Bracers+5 Ring +5 NAC + 5 Ride

AC 44
Defense Ride 48

No shield do to archery focus.

On top of this you are a KILLER mounted archer with the right feats. With a amazing mount and good saves with Evasion! So I'm not a true power gaming build.

Just through in the rest monk for Wis to AC or Duelest and you can get in the 50's with a decent character.

An AC over 40 is no great shakes, and is really expected for a Tank that is focusing mostly on offense. For characters focusing on defense, I'd call any AC over 70 or so "good enough." And, of course, I bias "long-run" effects over "I can boost my AC to 150 for 10 min" day builds. As the BBEG, I'd just say "tell me when you're through," teleport away, then teleport back 10 minutes later.

I'm NPCing a VoP, VoNV Favored Soul/Risen Martyr right now, and he's sporting a 39...at 12th level (pretty much all touch).

You can find the deepwarden in the previews for Races of Stone on the website... saves $30 if you wanted to buy the book for only one class (dont see why)

Halfling Outrider gets a great AC.
*snip*

Now all you need is an awakened mount with levels of devoted defender. :D
