| Abelard03-31-04, 10:24 PM | MY DM just sprang a homebrew magic item that grants my bard a cohort (as per Leadership feat), so I've got until Friday night to draw him up (otherwise I think the DM might come up with one for me, and we don't want THAT to happen, do we? ;) ). I think I've decided to go with a war cleric (maybe dwarven), but I've not done anything cleric-like in 3.0/3.5, so I have no real idea on which way to take him, or how to get there! Assume a standard range of "good" scores (say 16 16 14 14 12 12) for now. I'd prefer a melee-type of a short race (which is why dwarf came to mind). Starting funds may be limited; DM is considering making him start with the wealth from the DMG's NPC table (oh, he starts at 8th level) - about 9,400 gp, though I'm obviously trying to increase that! Let's presume I'm not overly successful there. Any published material is considered except Mongoose, of course all subject to DM approval. We play in FR, so anything from that setting is preferred. I'm not sure if multiple PrC's are allowed, but if there's a good RP reason, I think it will fly. That's about it. My cohort is a blank slate, and needs to be written quick! Thanks to all for your help... P.S. - to my DM, who I know will see this: sheesh, you gave me only 2 days! Of course I'd end up here! |

Travel is one of my favorites. Alternatively, you could go for a cleric with the War and Strength domains. Clangeddin Silverbeard is the Dwarven god with these, and his favored weapon is a battleaxe. Protection is also a nice domain, as it gives you access to the Stoneskin spell once you can cast 6th level spells. Gorm Gulthyn has War and Protection, and his favored weapon is also a battleaxe. Haela Brightaxe has greatsword as her favored weapon, and the War and Luck domains. The greatsword is better mechanically that a battleaxe, and Luck has a very nice domain ability. It would be interesting to play a dwarf with a Chaotic bent to his personality also, I think. (Haela's alignment is CG). The Runecaster is also a good PrC, fits a dwarven cleric well, and it only requires one prereq feat. And it's actually a useful feat (imagine that!). If your DM plans on using the new 3.5 version of Persistant Spell in the Players Guide to Faerun, then don't bother getting it. If not, it is a great feat for the fighting cleric. |

If your DM likes to throw grapplers at you (mine does) Close Quarters is a necessary feat. |
| Abelard06-01-04, 05:03 PM | Well, I ended up with a human cleric of Oghma - it fit the campaign well (my bard is a devotee of Oghma). But thanks for all the dwarven suggestions. Now I'd like to get into a PrC - due to the release of Complete Divine, my DM has allowed me to re-select any feats in order to meet a prestige class, and I think he'd be willing to make it a blanket offer. Brother Z (the cleric) is a True Neutral seeker of knowledge. Think Indiana Jones ("This belongs in a museum!!"), but with a little more emphasis on beating up the people who get in his way, versus trying to sneak around them. I'm looking for a PrC that's a little martial, but without giving up too much on the casting side. Since he's the party's back-up front-liner (and we only have one to begin with!), he needs to swing true, but being two levels behind the party due to cohort rules, his spells are already a little behind the power curve, so losing many more caster levels would really harm that aspect of his character (and he's the only divine caster, too!). So, yeah, maybe it sounds like I want him to do everything (well, I am playing a bard, too, so maybe it's in the mentality already :) ), but I'll take any suggestion that somewhat meets these goals. If I have to focus him in one direction or the other, that may just be what I have to do. Thanks y'all for your help... |
