| darktaro02-02-07, 06:11 PM | Hi everyone, I'm currently gearing up for a 10th level campaign in the Forgotten Realms universe. I'd say I'm a rookie when it comes to D&D and I was toying with the idea of making a class who's main focus is to work outside of battle with skills like disable device, tracking, climbing, etc. and I wasn't quite sure how to approach it. At the same time, not being totally useless in battle. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to where to start, the books aside from the core PHB and DM guide are, Player's Guide to Faerun, Forgotten Realms campaign setting, Complete Adventurer, Complete Divine and Complete Scoundrel. Our campaign is taking place mainly underground and has to do with the Drow. Should I make a prestige class from any of these books? Or should I stick with say a level 10 Ranger. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! |

Sneak Attack makes you decent in combat more often than not, and 8+INT skill points plus the skill tricks in CScound should be great for most skill use. If you want to go completely focused on skills, I might recommend Exemplar from Complete Adventurer. |

I have to second Phoenix's opinion though. Scout is a lot easier to play, and all you have to do is move to get your extra dice of damage. You may also want to ask your party mates if they're more experienced for some help with building your character, or getting started. I also like this thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=482636) as a good place to read up for ideas on, well, just about anything. |

Scouts requires space to move though and underground, it always isn't possible. However, a human rogue 3/ranger2 is also a good start for a character like you're describing. Ranger gives you twfing and track. Rogue gives you sneak attack and evasion. Both give you tons of skills. Oh...and since it is mostly drow you will be fighting, you can get them as your favorite enemy through ranger. |
