I'm thinking a do'gooder cleric or a scolarly wizard. Any advice on character creation is appreciated.

Wizard 1 or Cleric 1 - I mean, seriously, what the heck else do you want from us?

If you want a wizard, then I'd go with Spell Focus or an item creation feat. You DEFINITELY need to put points into Spellcraft and Concentration, and might want to put in some Knowledge skills as well. As for stat distribution, put a 16 in Int, a 14 in Constitution and Dexterity, and the last stat point in either wisdom or strength. I'd recommend a grey elf or a human.
I can't advise well on Clerics (I've never really played one), but there are many threads that can help you out. Try the CO Board FAQ.

By character creation i assume you meant character build...

For cleric:

STATs
1. WIS
2. CON
3. Everything else. Just note the following:
a) INT 13 qualifies you for combat expertise
b) CHA 12 and 5 ranks of knowledge religion ensures that the lowest undead you can turn is your level -3 (instead of -4) on a roll of 1. Add in improved turning allows you to turn undead with your level -2 HD on a roll of 1.
c) If planning to wear full plate (50 lbs), you need at the very least STR 14.

Feats
Clerics usually just come off the short end of the stick when it comes to feats as there are not a lot to choose from. I would advise you to take any of the following:

1. Skill Focus: Concentration - there will be times you need to dish out healing in unfavorable situations. Every bit of concentration helps when that happens.

2. Improved turning - Lets face it, undead are very nasty and when you hear bumps in the night, you're the only one who can "bump" back. Thus helping out this ability would be a good boost. Only exception to this is if you're absolutely sure that the DM won't be doing any bumping during your career.

3. Scribe scroll

4. Extra turning - if you have low CHA or your campaign is undead-heavy. Although if you have crappy CHA and need to do turning i would prioritize on Improved turning, then extra turning.

5. Combat Expertise - if you expect to be in the thick of the battle. Only problem to this is you need to put at least 13 to your INT. Something that not all clerics can afford.

Skills
1. Concentration - There will be times where you need to minister healing to a dying comrade while in the thick of the battle. Casting sanctuary first before doing your healing is fine but one round later might be one round too late. In short, Max this out.

2. Knowledge: Religion - Helps out your turn undead once you have 5 ranks, helps identify undead abilities...

3. Spellcraft - Identify incoming spells. Nuff said...
