| Mywurld02-02-04, 02:49 PM | Looking for some advice. I am some what new to the game and have a limited knowledge of making characters. I need to create a 15th level character and I don't know what to do. Since my character can't be evil I wanted to use the BoED. I tried to convince my DM to let me start off as a Saint but he won't let me, I can eventually achieve sainthood, but is it worth it? Here are the requirements: (3.5e) I have to be a material planes creature, humanoid or monster humanoid, I can't be evil, my base stats are 17, 16, 15, 13, 13, 10 (can be assigned in any order). I can pick basic equipment (non-magical) DM to assign magic items. There is already a Ranger, multi-classed Fighter(4)/Cleric(11) and Arcane Trickster in the campaign. With that said, what kind of character should I play? |
| Funny Slaughter02-02-04, 03:17 PM | your party has most aspects covered up, so its really up to you what you want to play. i would suggest that you play a mundane character (means: non-caster) or a secondary caster at most. i am currently enjoying this build (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118232), its easy to play and has great combat abilities as well as some good versatility. trip is a special combat action used to put enemies on the ground, i digged into the mechanics here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=110451) beside of looking cool your enemy gets -4 to hit while you get +4, if you flank him (means another friendly guy on the other side of him) this is a total of +6. tell me if you like this build, its not really needed to include all the stuff like feral-template, but if you are allowed to its sure fun. you can also take a look at the 3.5-threads for the corresponding classes if you favor one, the 3.5-rogue-thread, barbarian, ranger etc. for many more build-ideas. as said you can mainly go where you want, feel free to post any ideas you have about a build and we can help you with it. gs Funny |
| Mywurld02-02-04, 04:18 PM | Thanks for the build I may use it, I like the idea of combining the classes. I'll let you know if I decide to play it. I have a question what is the WF(GS) feat? |
| MirMo02-02-04, 04:22 PM | Perhaps you should try a nice Arcane Knight type character as mentioned in the gish thread by JosephKell (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150451). Then you can fill the primary Tank roll and don't die of boredom if there are no fights about, because of your nice magic tricks ;) HTH |
| Sisyfos02-02-04, 05:07 PM | Originally posted by Mywurld Thanks for the build I may use it, I like the idea of combining the classes. I'll let you know if I decide to play it. I have a question what is the WF(GS) feat? Weapon Focus (GreatSword) So you are taking weapon focus feat for your greatsword. Funny's build seems effective and pretty fun to play. Are you playing a planescape campaign by any chance? (Just referring to that prime material phrase of yours). Anyhow. There is a huge difference on whether you want to be a spellcaster or not. There are zillions of builds linked to my signature. You can pick the general archetype of what you want and go to that from my signature and see if you find anything which matches your desires. | paradoxmage02-02-04, 05:27 PM | you got just about everything covered, play something more about fun than makeing the party have every class play a 1/2 troll gnome that has all barbarian levels who foams at the mouth and eats everything he fights. |
| LordShade02-02-04, 09:00 PM | Got any cool concepts in your head that you'd like to play? Maybe something you saw in a movie, or read in a book? We can help you stat out things like that in a combat-effective way. |
| PhaedrusXY02-02-04, 09:14 PM | I posted some builds about a third of the way down in this http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118290&highlight=singh+AND+rager+AND+trip thread. I play another variation of it that I posted in a thread by Funny Slaughter over halfway down in this one: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=118232&highlight=singh+AND+rager+AND+trip The one I play is a grappler/trip/unarmed combat build. It is a tough monk that can rage, basically. Having some troubles getting the "insert hyperlink" function to work for some reason... |
| Mywurld02-03-04, 12:52 AM | My goal is for my character to become a saint, unless somebody other then my DM can convince me of a good reason not to do it. I would pretty much like to design a character that will eventually meet all of the criteria and can be played with this intent in mind some what easily, which in my opinion limits what type of character I can be and I don't really know what type of characters would be a good choice. So far the campaigns I have played have consisted of a guild of NE/CE assassins in which I played a rogue/illusionist and another that was inspired by the colonization of America were we played bugbears and knolls as characters and the normal PC races were considered enemies in which I played a bugbear barbarian. So my knowledge of playing an extremely good character is limited but I think I can manage not to kill in cold blood. I like the sound of the Arcane knight that MirMo suggested and honestly I think just about every build I've seen sounds like a great concept. But I don't quite understand the concept of multi-classing 4 or 5 times doesn't that defeat the purpose of obtaining high levels? |
| paradoxmage02-03-04, 02:04 AM | Play a Paladin2nd/wizard5th/eldrith knight8th after getting 10knight take archmage +12 base attack cast 6th level spells and not to mention all the paladin abilities 8 feats(9 if human) |
| Virgil02-03-04, 02:21 AM | In terms of Multi Classing several times, its all about customizing (empowering) the character you want to make...often times a High-Level, Multi Classed, is more powerful than a straight 20 Core Build, that's why people tend to do it. Don't worry about it defeating the purpose of obtaining high levels. Unfortunately I dont have BoED, so all I can do at the moment is wish you the best of luck. -Virgil- |
| Borin02-03-04, 06:46 AM | Originally posted by paradoxmage Play a Paladin2nd/wizard5th/eldrith knight8th I'd take sorcerer instead of wizard. Slows your casting down a bit, but having your spellcasting stat on saves is just great. |
| Endarire02-03-04, 07:06 AM | I was thinkin' going Druid and being a Lion of Talsid from BoED; this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81385) has more info. You could also be this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=174583), but it'd require a custom deity or house rules. -EE |
| paradoxmage02-03-04, 08:41 AM | I'd take sorcerer instead of wizard. Slows your casting down a bit, but having your spellcasting stat on saves is just great ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are right that this is a great thing, but past that there is all negative to useing sorcerer. Takeing wizard you get scribe scrolls free you get an extra feat at 5th an array of spells to choose from metamagic dosent take full round action you get higher spells quicker |
| SmiloDan02-03-04, 09:27 AM | Is the ranger in your campaign the archer type or two weapon type? If the two weapon type, may I suggest an elf druid archer? You'd be very versatile. Another cool build is the Vow of Poverty Monk. Lots of bonus exalted feats, which can't hurt your ambition for sainthood. And you don't have to worry about equipment, since you're not allowed any! What's your favorite aspect of role playing? Combat, spellchucking, skill checks, interacting with NPCs, etc.? |
| Mywurld02-03-04, 10:39 AM | I have decided on the Eldrith knight build. Paladin2nd/Wizard5th/Eldrith Knight8th To qualify for Sainthood I will need to meet the following qualifiactions(I have already met some of them): :) Must be of good alignment :confused:Must have at least three exalted feats :)Must never have lost the benefit of exalted feats or class abilities because of committing an evil act, even if the character properly atoned. :)Must at all times behave in a way the DM considers to be exemplary of the exalted path described in this book. :) Must be at least 6th level  Must take an extrodinary sacrifice (not neccessarly his or her life) for the good of another |
| Mywurld02-03-04, 11:54 AM | Choosing Exalted Feats: Celestial Familiar Feat, how do I get a new familiar at Arcane spellcaster level 3 or 7? Doesn't loosing my first familiar make me loose XP or can I choose not to take a familiar until a higher level without penalty? What would be a good Celestial Familiar? |
| Arivil02-03-04, 12:41 PM | If you are really going for Sainthood i'd suggest confirming this with your DM. Only he can give you the opportunities to really proof yourself. If he's against your plan and doesnt support you, it's going to be very very hard and frustrating. I'd also try to talk to him after your gaming sessions to discuss your behavior and your intentions, it's very easy for him to misunterstand you because he will have another picture in mind about your char. |
| Mywurld02-03-04, 01:31 PM | Thanks for the pointers Arivil, my DM has already agreed to let me try and become a Saint, since we are starting at such a high level he does not want me to just start out as a saint, I actually have to earn it. He is actually working on what my extrodinary sacrifice will be and he is going to incorporate it into the campaign some how, I think I'm gonna die:eek: The talk after each session is a good idea and I will bring it up so that we can keep my character on the path to sainthood without any complications. Once I get my character build done I will post it for critiquing. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP!:D |
| paradoxmage02-03-04, 07:48 PM | Celestial Familiar Feat, how do I get a new familiar at Arcane spellcaster level 3 or 7? Doesn't loosing my first familiar make me loose XP or can I choose not to take a familiar until a higher level without penalty? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well since you are starting at 15th level you are basically just now getting a familiar for the first time, so you dont have to worry about xp loss and waiting a year and a day. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What would be a good Celestial Familiar? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It all depends on what you think is useful(bird can fly), If i was playing the eldritch knight I would pick an animal that dosent add to saves(since they will be great because of paladin), I would then look at my skills and pick an animal that would help one of those(like bluff or even spot) |
| paradoxmage02-03-04, 07:56 PM | 3 exalted feats: Touch of golden ice celestial familiar knight of stars or purify spell |
| Kaigan02-03-04, 08:56 PM | Next time why not try the SkyLord PrC with either ranger or fighter feats prior. The Skylord is a pretty interesting class. You get a choice of celesital giant eagle, celestial giant owl or a celestial pegasus. All in all you can ride through anything, shoot arrows accurately through any wind, and can search, spot and listen perfectly fine. Coupled with mounted feats and if you can the windrider of Masters of the Wild and you will have an exalted mounted flying destroyer, either melee or ranged your choice. But as you have found a class already, maybe next time. |

| LordShade02-04-04, 03:34 AM | Always take 1 level of spellsword in any Eldritch Knight build. Always. Pal2/Wiz4/SS1/EK10/XXX would be a better choice. |
| Mywurld02-04-04, 03:27 PM | Stats: str 15, dex 13, con 13, int 20, wis 10, cha 16 Saves: Fort 11, Ref 4, Will 6 I was thinking about Getting a Weasel as my familiar to increase my Ref since it is so low. Would the Lantern Archon be a better pick? My DM has informed me that I may choose one magic item that is 20,000 or less. I was thinking the Ring of Wizardry I or a Head Band of intellact + 4 any suggestions on which is better or something that is better then both? Specialty school: Divination/Prohibited School: Necromancy These are the feats I choose before seeing paradoxmage's post. The feats that Paradoxmage suggested that I did not take are in Italics next to the feat I choose instead. What do you think? 1st:paladin-Nymph's Kiss (Skill Focus(spellcraft)), Power Attack(Combat Expertise) 2nd-paladin 3rd-wizard-Celestial Familiar 4th-wizard 5th-wizard 6th:wizard-Spell Focus(Evocation) 7th:wizard-(bonus)Spell Mastery(Purify Spell) 8th:eldritch knight-(bonus)Cleave(Improved Combat Expertise) 9th:eldritch knight-Extend Spell 10th:eldritch knight 11th:eldritch knight 12th:eldritch knight-Improved Initiative(Spell Focus) 13th:eldritch knight 14th:eldritch knight 15th: eldrich knight-Hands of a Healer(Touch of Golden Ice) |
| Qaetar02-04-04, 04:27 PM | Lantern Archon == Never need light again. Weasel == Very fun in your pants. Hard choice. I would suggest that you not make the sacrifice and fall from exaltedship. Seems like it'd be fun to me. Then again, maybe I just like screwing peoples' plans. (Qaetar) |
| PhaedrusXY02-04-04, 04:49 PM | Originally posted by LordShade Always take 1 level of spellsword in any Eldritch Knight build. Always. Pal2/Wiz4/SS1/EK10/XXX would be a better choice. LordShade is of course correct here. You lose absolutely nothing and gain -10% Arcane Spell Failure. Some of the feats you left out of Paradox Mage's build are the ones that are prereqs for the Archmage prestige class. If you don't plan on going into that, then no problem. Where do you plan on going after level 15, though? Also, are planning on playing this character as a spellcaster first and using your spells offensively? Or using his spells to buff himself, for battlefield control, and to summon allies? If you plan on playing as a spellcaster primarily, then I think wizard is the way to go. If you plan on mainly buffing and summoning stuff with your magic, and then fighting, I'd suggest going with Sorcerer (as someone else already said). Adding your Charisma mod to saves is an ok ability for a wizard. It is a tremendous ability for a Sorcerer, and only gets better as you go up in levels. I would forget Spell Mastery, Cleave, and Hands of the Healer. Spell Mastery is pretty much never useful. If you get stuck somewhere with no spellbook and no spells in your head, you did something very wrong. If it happens more than once, your DM hates you. Pick feats that will be useful all the time, not something that might come up once in your character's entire career. Cleave is decent if you are a monster of destruction, like a Frenzied Berzerker. I don't think it would be particularly good for a fighter/mage type of character. Hands of the Healer works by increasing your Lay on Hands ability. Your Lay on Hands ability is terribly weak because you only have two Palladin levels. Just give up on it, and try to use your feats to enhance what you are good at, not shore up something you stink at. |
| paradoxmage02-04-04, 07:08 PM | I agree with everything that PhaedrusXY(:smirk: except for sorcerer part, lol) wrote. I would still recomend going the archmage direction, being able to do mastery of spells would assis this type of character in many many ways(Antimagic field , mastery of shape your space clear of it so enemys are effected but you are not, or being able to throw a fireball or without effecting any party memebers(they will appriciate that) etc.) mastery of elements or arcane reach or spell like ability, these will be handy when you can cast 9th level spells at 20th llevel and you have a base attack of +15 to add to your armor class(if you take improved combat expertise) Hope you have fun with it, can you do a full write up(name, backstory, etc.) when you are done |
| Mywurld02-04-04, 11:43 PM | Thanks for the advice on the SS class and the preqs for AM. I actualy went out and bought the Complete Warrior and I took 3 levels of SS which gave me a 10th feat and a -15% ASF, I only went back 1 casting level not a big deal for what I get in retrun. I will definitly take Archmage next. It may be a few days but I would be happy to do a full write up. |
| Endarire02-05-04, 01:30 AM | I recommend taking Spellsword1 and wearing a mithril chain shirt and mithril buckler. For feats, get improved initiative! Going first is important and I can't stress that enough. Ahem. Get Nymph's Kiss at L1 if your DM allows it as the extra skill points help. That's about my standard advice, but I advocate this because it's useful. -EE |
