| Used-As-A-Shield04-29-06, 02:04 PM | right now, i'm going with a Masterwork Scythe, +1 Full Plate, Amulet of Health +2, and a Ring of Protection +1. any advice? standard starting cash for 5th level. |
| Gavinfoxx04-29-06, 02:33 PM | Tell us... *your party makeup, in as much detail as possible *the stats for this cleric, and whether they can be changed or rearranged *the race for this cleric, and whether that can be changed *the feats for this cleric, and whether they can be changed or rearranged *the books you have easy access to *whether or not you can get stuff from more esoteric books *the amount of money this cleric has access to *the domains of this cleric *if any sorts of items have been significantly restricted *whether or not you can do custom items, or items from faerun or eberron or other campaign settings *what style of playing you would prefer for this cleric. healing, buffing, summoning, melee combat, archer, what? also, for the next few hours, you can IM me on msn... |
| FriendoftheDork04-29-06, 03:29 PM | I'd drop the +1 full plate and the ring of protection as you can just cast cleric vestment. Buy a rod of metamagic (lesser) extend spell (3000 gp I think), and it will last for 10 hours in the beginning and eventually more than 24! Use it on your shield as well to save you 1000gp more. A mw full plate is probably worth it, as your dex is probably low. I like shield of faith too much to use the rings, it does take an action to cast it but the bonus is better, it scales and it's free! With your extend spell rod you can get it for 10 minutes right away, so it should last a fight or two, depending on the time between. I see you want a Scythe. Although it has OK damage and excelent crit, your AC will suffer as a result. A club should do the trick, after you cast Spikes on it (+2 to hit, +5 damage for 5 hours). I'd go for a standard mw mace as well. If you want a Scythe anyway because it cooler for your character (Nerull cleric?), all the power to you. |
| Gavinfoxx04-29-06, 04:21 PM | The versions of brambles and spikes in Spell Compendium tend to last one round per level... Kinda sucky, I know... anyway, you need to look at spell compendium and player's handbook and start buying scrolls... some wands of lesser vigor would be useful, as would some scrolls of panacea, and some scrolls of restoration. a hat of disguise is useful, maybe a wand of alicorn lance (check the silver marches web enhancement for that spell), a wand of something that helps skill checks like wieldskill or the spell in complete adventurer that does something similar... looking into pearls of power is useful, as is a vest of resistance + 1, a heward's handy haversack, a ring of feather falling, a travel cloak (magic of faerun)... getting some masterwork full plate is a good idea. |

Hmm, don't own the spell compendium and it's optional anyway. Then again so is complete divine ;) I second wand of lesser vigor, perhaps with fewer than max charges. Hat of disguise is always nice in campaigns that's not just mindless dungeon crawls. Vest of resistance is always nice. |
| Used-As-A-Shield04-29-06, 04:58 PM | alright, i realize that i probably should have given more informationi. first things first: the +1 plate was stupid when i could have gotten Masterwork. my bad. second, the scythe is there for the exact reason you mentioned (though, i'm actually a FORMER Cleric of Nerull-turned-Cleric of Wee-Jas). Statwise, i'm a human with the following stats: Str: 16 Dex: 13 Con: 18 (+6 modifier with the amulet) Int: 12 Wis: 18 Cha: 15 suffice to say, i won't be doing much healing, so i'm looking for a more middle of the road cleric. the only party member i know we have is a dwarf fighter going for absurd amounts of armor. i've selected no feats thus far, no skills, and would like to keep it mostly core (though i do have access to Complete Divine, Libris Mortis, and Heroes of Horror, but would like to keep use of them to a minimum as i don't own them). the stats are available to change. and this will be a horror setting, so it would be safe to expect undead aplenty. Starting gold is standard (9000 i believe) |
| Gavinfoxx04-29-06, 05:54 PM | If you are going to be in a Heroes of Horror setting, it is generally a really really really REALLY good idea to not do an evil or neutral cleric, but something that is decidedly good and has, say, the glory and sun domains... is there any particular reason you are going for the evil turned neutral rather than the completely good archetype for a horror campaign? After all, a very divine, good, and sun-type cleric has further to fall in a horror campaign... |
| Used-As-A-Shield04-29-06, 06:04 PM | eh, the DM never specified an alignment (just not evil) and this is a concept that i've been playing around with for awhile. |
| FriendoftheDork04-29-06, 08:15 PM | The weapon of Wee Jas is a dagger, I think, which is alot less costly in terms of feats. If you're making this character now, I wouldn't take proficiency with scythe. Remember that Nerull clerics are usually banned thus the more secretly dagger should be favoted among his clerics while the scythe would be relegated to ceremonies. And really -4 to attack is no problem when you perform CDGs ;) Additionally you will want a mace - even a nerull cleric needs to stomp on unruly undead from time to time, and nothing crushes a skull like a mace. |
| Used-As-A-Shield04-29-06, 08:23 PM | wouldnt a disrupting scythe be just as effective as a mace, if not more so? [Edit]: in retrospect, i lost my mind for a sec. ignore the previous statement. |

Sorry no can do :P Yeah a magical disrupting scythe is alot better against undead in general that a mw mace ;) |
| Used-As-A-Shield04-29-06, 09:22 PM | but i can't have Disrupting on something that isnt bludgeoning. thats why i asked you to ignore the previous statement, cause i was out of my mind. |
| Gavinfoxx04-30-06, 03:17 AM | Just focus on a cleric who fights with a mace most of the time... that will work fine... |
