| Gallameed08-31-05, 07:52 PM | Hello, I have a new player joining our group soon, she is new to roleplaying and has never played D&D before! She reads loads of fantasy, likes fantasy movies and has always wondered if D&D would be fun. After sitting at our table to see if she liked the game, she decided to give it a go and will start a new campaign with us next month. We are going to be playing a pretty straight forward dungeoneering adventure (in the realms) to kick things off and get her head around rolling dice and combat. She took a look through the players handbook and the complete books then decided to play a young naive fighter, who happens to be a Scythe swinging combat monster. Because she's new to the game she wants to play a character that is as rules-light as possible at first, that way she can learn the basics as we go along. She is interested in taking her mastery of the scythe to 20th level (if she lives that long) and wants to be a big damage dealer, but lightly armoured and I would love to see a couple of builds posted here so she could follow them as she progresses. race: human tethyrian alignment: neutral stats: 28 point buy class: fighter weapon: scythe or even an exotic scythe of some sort if it seems cool. deity: not chosen yet Books: any wizards. |
| PhaedrusXY08-31-05, 08:55 PM | Sounds like you can use 3.0 stuff. If so, the Weapon Master PrC from Sword and Fist is one of the best things to do with a Scythe fighter. With it, you can wind up with a 17-20 crit range and x5 on crit damage a few times per day. It is nasty. I'd also stick Improved Trip in there, since you have to take Combat Expertise anyway, you can trip with a scythe, and it is a nice combat tactic in 3.5. Make sure she has some way of becoming Large sized (Enlarge Person potions, or spells from a friendly wizard, and later Polymorph). It goes well with tripping. If it's an Evil game, the Disciple of Dispater (Book of Vile Darkness) is nice, also. |
| Dark Kyosuke08-31-05, 09:03 PM | Okay... Being a Scythe fan, I can offer some insights. First off, remind her that Fighters get LOTS of feats and can afford to complete many feat chains. Also let her know, GOOD STRENGTH IS A MUST. You can easily fit in a 16 into 28 point buy. It should go into Strength. That said, I reccomend getting Improved Trip as soon as possible. Yes, Scythe already allows trips without AoO, but the +4 to your trip roll is nothing to sneeze at, and you get a free attack on a sucessful trip action. I also suggest Improved Disarm, since we're going this way. Power Attack is a good choice, since this is a two-hander. Cleave is a possible (a free attack is never a bad thing). Since you'll have room, consider Whirlwind Attack, but don't rely on it. If you've access to lots of non-core books, then you CAN go straight Fighter. At the same time, if you have access to Complete Divine, and the Realms has a Neutral or Good diety with Scythe as a favored weapon, I reccomend Pious Templar. Mettle alone makes the class worth taking (All saves that allow partial effects on a sucessful save instead IGNORE those effects on a sucessful save), the bonus feats and limited spellcasting (Paladin spell list) are no small thing either. Absurdly easy entry too. Not as easy to enter, but just as worthwhile, is Dervish from Complete Warrior. This dancing machine can be ugly (or so I'm told, I can never figure out how it works. I'd need to see it in action first...), and since Scythe is a slasher, you can qualify. As far as I'm concerned, it's hard to go wrong with the Scythe. Hopefully, someone else can give more solid advice, and advice on Realms PrCs and feats, but most of the good stuff as far as most two-handed melee battlers go is in the core. (Except Leap Attack! So good, it's kind of scary. Find it in Complete Adventurer, but be careful. It has teeth...) Have fun. |
| tiercel08-31-05, 09:59 PM | Well, the completely generic, fairly effective, easy-to-play, starting-from-level-1 build would start with some fighter levels I'd assume: Fighter 1: Power Attack, Cleave, Weapon Focus: Scythe Fighter 2: Improved Initiative Fighter 3: Iron Will Fighter 4: Weapon Specialization: Scythe Fighter 6: Combat Expertise, Improved Trip (You could switch Expertise/Trip for Power/Cleave, but if she's really feeling her way into things you might want to stay simpler at first.) An additional possibility would be dumping Fighter 5-6 and either Power/Cleave or Expertise/Trip for two levels of barbarian (getting fast movement, rage, and uncanny dodge, and taking Extra Rage). Depends how your player would feel about multiclassing, or multiclassing early. From there, if your player is starting to get comfortable, you might want to think about PrCs... and one that might fit well, if your new player would like to play out a distrust of "all this fancy magic business, " is Occult Slayer. (You'd just have to plan ahead with the cross-class skill ranks.) At 28 points you could go: STR 16 DEX 14 CON 12 INT 14 WIS 10 CHA 8 (if you wanted to go with tripping) or STR 16 DEX 14 CON 14 INT 10 WIS 12 CHA 8 (if you wanted to dump tripping and go barbarian) Either way, Fighter 6/Occult Slayer 10 or Fighter 4/Barb 2/OS 10 would give you a nearly full build fairly simply with a twist. Of course, if you don't mind going full tactical you could probably almost make a Fighter 20 build using Complete Warrior... say something like F8: Improved Critical: Scythe F9: Improved Bull Rush F10: Shock Trooper F12: Improved Sunder, Combat Brute F14: Improved Toughness etc. |
| slade_caizer08-31-05, 10:00 PM | Gotta get used to the numbers and combat, eh? Fighter's great for that, especially for a first-timer. Maybe something like this would be balanced for her. It'll have Dex like she wanted and still be good to go for Scythe use in the Str department. Con will give a lot room for error, and Int will free up some nice feat options. Str 14 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 14 Wis 10 Cha 10 Fighter2/Swashbuckler3/Rogue3/Hexblade3/??????9 is an old stand-by of mine for a decently well-rounded fighter-type. I could be wrong, but I don't think it'll be complicated. It'll have an almost perfect BAB to start with, decent HP, Evasion and Mettle for lasting power, and a few skill points to toss about. Also, adding an extra stat to damage doesn't hurt. A scythe is wonderful for so many things. It's two-handed, making it nice for Power Attack. As mentioned in other posts, tripping with it is wicked. A scythe will rarely threaten without some work, but having Power Critical for that +4 on confirmations wouldn't be a bad thing. Whatever you do, don't forget Combat Reflexes. |
| Vanderom08-31-05, 10:29 PM | Fighter can be a pain for a new player - too many feat choices to think about, and then use effectively. Straight Barbarian can be much easier, as most of the stuff will be written right there in the PH. Then your only tactical choice is when to rage. |
| ninjarabbit08-31-05, 10:47 PM | I'd make here a barbarian2/fighterx since scythes really benefit from high str. To start out I'd do this Str 15 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 14 Wis 10 Cha 8 1-barbarian1-power attack, combat experitse 2-fighter1-improved trip 3-barbarian2-iron will 4-fighter2-weapon focus scythe 5-fighter3 6-fighter4-weapon specialization scythe, combat reflexes 7-fighter5 8-fighter6-improved sunder 9-fighter7-improved critical scythe 10-fighter8-greater weapon focus scythe 11-fighter9 12-fighter10- extra rage, dodge 13-fighter11 14-fighter12-greater weapon specialization scythe 15-fighter13- karmic strike 16-fighter14-improved initaitve 17-fighter15 18-fighter16-improved toughness, extra rage 19-fighter17 20-fighter18-cleave Simple and effective but gives her enough combat choices so she doesn't get too bored once she gets the hang of it. |
| Gallameed09-01-05, 10:08 AM | Thanks for taking the time out to give your answers guys, much appreciated! :) After looking over this thread she has become all excited and now wants to become a Weaponmaster at some point, taking ideas mostly from tiercel, her new questions are: 1. Is there a better scythe than the standard one in the players handbook (like an exotic one) in any other book. 2. Is there any way a character can gain the ability to spend/channel hit points as extra damage through her weapon, so the scythe becomes an extension of her soul/inner power? 3.What are the best enhancments that she should look to put into her scythe, once she can afford them? 4. What does the leap attack feat do? 5. She also wants to be very intimidating. (Can anyone suggest any ways for a low cha character to become scary as she has put a 11 into cha, and dosent have many skill points as a fighter? I tried to suggest barbarian but she sees her character as "civilised" and "posh" and was totally turned off by all the depictions of barbarians.) |
| AramilWindwalker09-01-05, 10:20 AM | leap attack from complete adventurer says that if you jump and charge, and land next to the opponent you were charging at, you can double the damage from power attack, but we know that two doublings = a tripling, so she charges, jumps, and attacks, gaining +3 dmg for every -1 she takes on attacks with the scythe. for enhancements, i like wrathful healing, wraithstrike(if there are lots of incorporeal critters), plus any that add dmg(such as the elemental ones, or vicious, I like vicious with wrathful healing) |

I can feel my wallet holding its breath... :) |
| AramilWindwalker09-01-05, 10:32 AM | rules? if you mean stuff, leap attack is from complete adventurer the wraithstike is in enemies and allies on a sidebar, the others are in the DMG |
| Gallameed09-01-05, 10:38 AM | rules? if you mean stuff, leap attack is from complete adventurer the wraithstike is in enemies and allies on a sidebar, the others are in the DMG Enemies and Allies? Is that 3.0? I dont have that book and it could be hard to get hold of. I've got the DMG and found vicious in there but I cant see wrathful healing in there? |
| AramilWindwalker09-01-05, 11:03 AM | whoops, it's wrathful healing in enemies and allies it's a +3 enhancement, which gives the weilder 1/2 of the damage dealt as hp back, so it lowers the pressure on the cleric |
| Rim-Soulfang09-01-05, 11:35 AM | 1. Is there a better scythe than the standard one in the players handbook (like an exotic one) in any other book. 2. Is there any way a character can gain the ability to spend/channel hit points as extra damage through her weapon, so the scythe becomes an extension of her soul/inner power? 1. Talenta Sharrash is in the Eberron book. Exotic, scythe looking, reach and trip. 2. 1st level Paladin and Blackguard spell Divine Sacrifice (CD) does that. |
| PhaedrusXY09-01-05, 12:56 PM | 2. Is there any way a character can gain the ability to spend/channel hit points as extra damage through her weapon, so the scythe becomes an extension of her soul/inner power? She might consider being a Psychic Warrior instead of a fighter, or maybe just multiclassing into it for a few levels. Then she could take the Psionic Weapon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#psionicWeapon) and Greater Psionic Weapon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#greaterPsionicWeapon) feats. There is a combination of feats that allows you to get a psicrystal and have it regain focus for you every round, so you can use the Psionic Weapon feats every round instead of only once per encounter or something. There is also a Psychic Weapon Master (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827d) prestige class available online. It has many of the abilities of the normal Weapon Master, but also advances psionic manifestor levels somewhat. Psychic Warrior also has a power that heals half the damage they dish out (Vampiric Blade), like the Wrathful Healing enhancement, but you won't have to go buy a hard to get book to look at it. All the psionic stuff is available in the SRD, even if you don't have the Expanded Psionics book. 3.What are the best enhancments that she should look to put into her scythe, once she can afford them? There are long threads devoted to just this topic. :D Metalline seems to be one of the favorites, as it lets you change the type of metal your weapon is made of, saving you from having to carry around a golfbag to beat all the various damage reductions. I think it's from the Underdark book, but I'm not 100% sure. Holy (or Unholy) is one of the best ones from the DMG. 5. She also wants to be very intimidating. (Can anyone suggest any ways for a low cha character to become scary as she has put a 11 into cha, and dosent have many skill points as a fighter? I tried to suggest barbarian but she sees her character as "civilised" and "posh" and was totally turned off by all the depictions of barbarians.)There is a feat somewhere that lets you use Strength instead of Charisma for this I think, but I don't remember the feat name or what book it was from. Sorry... She could pick up a few levels of Exotic Weapon Master (Complete Warrior, good PrC otherwise too) if she goes with the Talenta Sharresh. One of their abilities is to be able to whirl their weapon around and intimidate everyone with their flourish, or something like that. The ability uses their base attack bonus plus some other stuff to set the DC, so she could be good at it even with a low charisma score. |
| tiercel09-01-05, 07:40 PM | Glad we could be of help! I personally don't know of an exotic scythe, but I imagine if you wanted to make one you could. It would be "cool" and you could consider Exotic Weapon Master PrC to do various weapon tricks.... As for spending hit points, while I don't know of a way to do that *directly*, you could certainly use the flavor text of "channel the fury of my soul" into put the Vicious quality onto the scythe (+2d6 damage, wielder takes 1d6 damage, DMG). In terms of other qualities... well, while elemental damage is popular (and cool), numerically it probably isn't that advantageous. Consider: If you just put a +1 hit/damage on the scythe, you can turn the +1 to hit into +2 damage with Power Attack, for a total of +3 damage. Compare this to, say, flaming, which does +1d6 damage (average 3.5), and has the disadvantage of needing to be "turned on" as a standard action, and is nerfed by anything with even fire resistance 5. Frankly you could do worse than to simply put as many straight "pluses" on the scythe as possible. If you want special effects, though, the Vicious quality is a good one (and cheap, at only +1). Wounding, to cause Con damage, is nasty -- and gets better as you get to higher level, but takes a bit of investment (+2 effective bonus). Especially if you think any Occult Slayer is a possibility, Magebane (Complete Arcane, +1 effective bonus) is strong -- in fact, at higher levels, it is so strong as to be completely broken. I wouldn't worry too much about DR. As soon as the scythe is +1, you don't have to worry about DR/magic, DR/alignment can be gotten around by align weapon, DR/silver can be gotten around by silversheen. If you're ready to make the investment, just make the scythe out of cold iron or adamantine and have a backup weapon made out of the other one. More to the point, you have a Power Attacking scythe wielder -- most DRs are 5, or occasionally 10 -- it's easier to just blast through the few enemies you can't break the DR of with raw damage. Frankly I'd probably recommend Vicious and then as many straight enhancement bonuses as you can. (As a side note, if your DM ever uses Sunder, actual enhancement bonuses make your weapon harder to break.) The straight up ways to be intimidating: Skill Focus (Intimidation) -- yes, it's really obvious, and you might laugh, but if she's going fighter she may have feats to burn depending on what progession. circlet of persuasion -- +3 to all Charisma based checks, and cheap. If intimidation is the only Charisma based skill she'll be using though, you might be better off with: a custom item giving a competence bonus to Intimidation -- by the standard guidelines, you'd be able to make a +5 item for 2500 and a +10 item for 10 000 gp. Presumably it would fit natively into the head slot, since there is the circlet of persuasion |
| Tony Vargas09-01-05, 09:06 PM | Because she's new to the game she wants to play a character that is as rules-light as possible at first, that way she can learn the basics as we go along. She is interested in taking her mastery of the scythe to 20th level (if she lives that long) and wants to be a big damage dealer, but lightly armoured If you want rules-light, the fighter ain't it. Every bonus feat the fighter takes might open up a whole new can of combat-rules worms. A barbarian would be a simpler and easier character to play, and it fits just fine. Light armor works, two-handed weapon works, big damage - no problem. A straightforward build that avoids any tricky rule questions: S: 16 D: 16 C: 14 In: 8 Wi: 10 Ch: 8 (yeah, it's a little extreme, but it works - enough AC, enough hps, plenty of melee power, why worry about other stuff) Skills: Listen, Survival, Intimidate (maxxed), 2 points into buying off illiteracy if you don't want it, another 2 into a second language, if desired at first, after that, you have a free point to 'play with' - put it into cross-class skills or whatever. Feats: L1: Power Attack, Cleave L3: WF: Scythe L6: Great Cleave L9: Improved Crit: Scythe That's about as nasty with a scythe as you need to be. For the remaining 3 feats you could go with Blindfight, Track, and Improved Sunder (if you ever want an option in combat besides slashing enemies to bits, you can slash thier weapons to bits) in whatever order apeals. Playing this character should be simple. You always prefer melee, enemies that are easy to hit or have DR you power attack. The only tactical decision is whether and when to Rage. If you want a little more to do outside of combat, you can take the Track feat earlier. Or, if the barbarian schtick starts to get boring, and you want to explore more combat options, you can jump over to fighter (same feats as above, regardless of when you switch, plus): F1: Combat Expertise F2: Improved Trip F4: WS: Scythe F6: Improved Initiative F8: GWF: Scythe F10: Improved Bull Rush or Sunder F12: GWS: Scythe For the remaining feats take Improved Sunder/Bull-Rush/Overrun, Dodge/Mobility/Spring-Attack, or whatever else strikes your fancy... OTOH, if you find you like feats, and getting 'goodies' every level, you can try a multiclass build, like this: F1: Feat, human feat, bonus feat F2: bonus feat F3: feat F4: bonus feat B1: Rage, Fast Movement F5: feat (L6) F6: bonus feat B2: Uncanny Dodge F7: feat (L9) etc... just take Barb as every 3rd level. Your odd-numbered fighter levels fall on the levels you get a feat (12, 15, etc,) so you always get /something/ each level. |
| Tony Vargas09-01-05, 09:25 PM | 3.What are the best enhancments that she should look to put into her scythe, once she can afford them? With it's high crit-multiplier, the Scythe does very well with straight enhancement bonuses. Otherwise, Bane vs a crit-immune class of creatures can be a plus, as can 'Burst' enchantments. 5. She also wants to be very intimidating. (Can anyone suggest any ways for a low cha character to become scary as she has put a 11 into cha, and dosent have many skill points as a fighter? I tried to suggest barbarian but she sees her character as "civilised" and "posh" and was totally turned off by all the depictions of barbarians.) Oops, missed that. You can still afford to max Intimidate (it's 1/3rd your skill points as a human fighter). With plenty of feats, you can afford to spend one on Skill Focus, Intimidate (+3), and even Persuasive (+2 intimidate & bluff) . 5 ranks of cross-class Bluff (another 1/3rd of your skill points from 1st through 7th) will give you a +2 synergy bonus with Intimidate (and a bunch of other skills you'll likely never use). Anyway, by 7th you can have a +17 intimidate check. That should make folks take notice. |
| lavafoxx09-01-05, 09:55 PM | 3.What are the best enhancments that she should look to put into her scythe, once she can afford them? Just for a coolness factor, you can never go wrong with a +5 Vorpal Scythe. :D |
| HiQKid09-01-05, 11:19 PM | Now, I'm not sure how optimized this is, but I like the flavor of a scythe wielding Ghost Faced Killer (PrC, from Complete Adventurer). Plus, being able to literally scare your opponent to death with an attack fits with the whole "intimidating thing". I'll think on it some more, and maybe post a build. |
| Rollinrice09-01-05, 11:31 PM | I cannot remember what source it is from but try the Reaper's Child PrC. |
| Gallameed09-02-05, 06:05 PM | Woah! All your answers have given my player and I a lot to think about. Looks like her character may become so much of a damage dealer I may have to clone it and use it against the party! Rim-Soulfang: We checked out the Talenta Sharrash, and she decided to just stick to the normal PHB scythe, thanks for the suggestion though. I think the whole reach weapon thing put her off. PhaedrusXY: The expanded psionic handbook is off limits to this player until she gets to grips with the basic rules first. But who knows, maybe after shes comfortable with things she might give something like that a try. If you could dig out the feat that lets you use str instead of cha when making an intimidate check that would be cool. tiercel: She decided after reading your post to go with the vicious ability as soon as she is able and loves the way it works. The feat: Skill Focus (Intimidation) is now on her wish list. Tony Vargas: I made her rethink the barbarian a little bit by telling her to disreguard the flavour and just go with the idea of her character being faster than average and prone to bursts of uncontrollable anger in combat, which she loved so now she may multiclass as barb at a higher level, thanks for the builds you gave us. lavafoxx: A +5 Vorpal Scythe!! I will NEVER let her have such a WMD! (if I can help it!) ;) HiQKid and Rollinrice: I dont have access to the Complete Adventuer right now but I will check that out as soon as my other player returns them to me next session. I dont know about the Reaper's Child PrC but it sounds cool, reaper as in scythe weilding reaper right? I dont have weapons of legacy yet, anyone know if or how I could make her scythe a legacy weapon, or explain the basic gist of legacy weapons to me? Thanks everyone, you people really took a weight off my shoulders... ...and added a few pounds more! ;) |

I don't remember the specs on it, but I think there's at least one in the Arms and Equipment Guide. I think it gave reach or something. 2. Try the Vicious enchantment. Target takes an extra 2d6 damage, wielder takes 1d6. I think it can be turned on/off like other enchantments (flaming for example). 3. If you want my favorite absurdity, you could use Throwing and Return. I have fun with that. Vorpal is...on the bottom of my list in 3.5. It only triggers on a natural 20 regardless of weapon threat range. Keen is virtually pointless for a common scythe, imo, but I must admit that it'd doubles your chance of threatening. I'd suggest using enchantments that tack on damage. Ghosttouch is a must! 4. I don't recall. Check Complete Warrior. 5. Hrmm...11 Cha and be intimidating... Well I'm going to say that it won't come down to the Intimidation checks. Just do what any good role-player does. Do things that are so well thought-out that there's no roll required. An example would be having your Half-Orc Druid begin eating a fallen Kobold foe. Granted this wouldn't fit her character image, but you get the idea. If she lets the blade of her scythe drop through the tabletop during a heated tavern discussion, things usually get quiet. That's the other thing...how many ways are there to sheath a scythe? For the most part I'd expect her to just have that thing shouldered all the time. Walking intimidation right there. ----- I've been working on an exotic scythe of my own. I'm not sure just how much it'd get laughed at around here, but since you're wanting one... Make one straight-hafted (the PHB depicts a curved or "s"-shaped one). On the bladeless end attach an iron (or other appropriate metal) sphere to counterweight the blade. You now have a Piercing/Slashing and Bludgeoning double weapon. There should probably be some penalties due to the overall weight. It'd be fun to see her be a TWFer with it. |
| Bonzai09-03-05, 11:45 AM | Heh, one of my missions as a dm is to one day do an epic campaign where the bad guy has a Vorpal Sythe with the throwing and returning enhancements. The imagery is just too cool for words. :D |
| Atanatotatos09-03-05, 12:22 PM | The COOLEST: a character named "the reaper",hooded in dark shadowy cloaks, with long pale hair and a sadistic grin, with the "wield oversized weapon" feat and a shyte in each hand... it would make the nazguls THRILL...! |
| obrysii09-03-05, 01:01 PM | There is a weapon enhancement in the Minatures handbook that changes the x4 crit into a x1d8 crit damage. It means that theres a chance it'll do between x1 to x3 damage, but then, there's an equal chance that it'll do x5 to x8 damage. And if you're a power-attacking barbarian with rage, it'll get nasty if it rolls on x8. At level 20: (2d4+(40 power attack+15 str bonus+5 enhancement))*8 =16d4+480 damage And that's hardly optimized. Edit: combine that with the weapon master ability, as pointed out by one of my friends, and you could get it up to x9 crits. That's 18d4+540 damage on a crit. |
