So my GM has this puzzle that we are solving. Its not easy...

Anyway, the reward is your choice of either 1 pt to a Stat, or an extra feat of your choice (must meet preq).

I have a 31pt buy character, currently a 1cleric/1Fighter, planning on Cleric4/Fighter4/Dwarf Defender 10.

Should i take a feat or add 1 to a (high) stat?

Current stats.

str 16
int 13
dex 13
wis 13
con 16
cha 6

If i take 1 to STR, then add 1 at level 4, that would +1 to hit and damage. Or, i could take one of my planned feats, then add weapon spec war axe (not planning to take it otherwise) when i hit Fighter lvl 4 - for +2 damage.

Im planning to bump WIS at lvl 8, for an extra lvl 2 spell.

Character is one of two main fighter types, and is mostly Axe and Sheild fighting.

We are playing 3.5 Core only, thats PHB and DMG, no mini's handbook cheese. We cannot buy magic items, have to make them ourselves, or find stuff the DM is happy for us to have.

Advice appreciated. Im tending to think 1 pt of str is better in the long term, as i dont see my character having any gloves or belts of str anytime soon.

with core only i would go for the stats. as a dwarfen defender i would go for con, it increases your stance as well as your hitpoints.

if you have more feats you would like to have and wont get in your build otherwise take the feats, but with these limited sources i would prolly go for the numbers.

If you were going for crowd control (for which Dwarven Defender has some nice synergies), a feat might work better...combat reflexes + spiked chain is a pretty good thing, and the dodge=>mobility=>spring attack chain is nice too but usually for more mobile types...

If you're never getting stat bonuses through magic etc it might help to even out some of your odd scores first...

A good thing when making choices is to build 2 versions and see which looks better to you...it's usually the right choice FOR YOU...

Take the feat. In fact, given the limits on magic items, take the Craft Arms and Armor feat or the Craft Wonderous Item feat.

Thanks for the feedback.

In not taking a 5th level of cleric anytime soon (loose another BAB increase), so i cant do the craft feats. I might look at that at level 12 or 16 - it will depend how things go in the campaign.

We already have a spiked chain fighter, so im staying axe/sheild, and thinking about using a tower sheild sometime soon for the extra ac (currently 19 or 20 with dodge).

I realise that i should boost CON to get the most from the DD class - i was planning to do that later - lvl 12, 16 increase. I think the STR boost will help in the lower levels more than the CON boost. I do intend to start trading BAB for AC (mobility feat?) as soon as I can qualify, so some extra + to hit from str will be quite useful.

The more i think about it, the more im leaning towards the str boost now and at lvl 4.
