AEG Magic means the ultimate Gish [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-21-04, 11:20 AM At the behest of a friend I started playing around with the Arcane Monk, from AEG's Magic. Its ridiculous and I eventually found out that minmaxing it wasn't even difficult.

I suppose I'm sharing this more out of powergaming than minmax. An accomplished minmaxer that looked at the class would quickly realize its insanely overpowered traits.

In short, its a Monk that casts spells like a Bard, with the following differences from a core Monk:

No bonus feats
Poor FORT save
No immunities or mystical stuff
Casts arcane spells
Spellcasting based on STR
Access to Polymorph, Righteous Might, Harm
Can cast and deliver touch spells as an attack that does not provoke an AoO

Please note what stays and does not change: Flurry and Unarmed damage progression.

First, Arcane Strike is a must-have feat. Its ability to boost to-hit and damage for an entire round obviously are better than delivering any quantity of most low-level touch spells.

Second, at level 15 you can cast Polymorph, turn into a Sun Giant (Huge), cast Righteous Might (+1 size), and use a Fanged Ring (+1 size for unarmed damage) to do 12d8 on a Punch with a Monk's Belt.

Third, you can at level 16 cast Harm as a free action while punching for this 12d8 damage.

I mean, the actual build I came up with is ArcaneMonk16/Fighter1/EldritchKnight3, and you can just fall into PerfectedOne if you make it to Epic.

What's bad is that this was done for a campaign where the DM asked for characters drawing from any source at all. So I've actually got this build that gets an AoO against opponents who miss him by 5 or more, enjoys an unnamed bonus to AC equal to his character level while unarmored, and can cast spells as a free action for d4 subdual damage. The rest is pretty much gravy.

What's even worse is that the character I'm playing is a spellcaster I actually think will be able to keep up with this monstrosity.

04-21-04, 12:28 PM That is why i try to stay away from all that is not WoTC. Which is often already unbalanced (Initiate of Mystra?).
