Let's say you have a level 17 Wizard who picks up, say, Wish as his first level 9 spell. He has all the requirements (Knowledge(Arcana) and Spellcraft 15 ranks, Skill Focus(Spellcraft), and Spell Focus in two schools of magic) to pick up the Archmage PrC at level 18. He chooses Arcane Thesis as his level 18 feat, and applies it to Wish. It's come to my understanding that there are at least 6 +0 Metamagic feats, which you can safely assume he's taken.

So he prepares Wish as a level 3 spell using his Arcane Thesis power. He then levels up and becomes an Archmage, and uses High Arcana to permanently lose a level 5 spell slot, and uses a spell slot six above the spell of choice (This would become level 9) and suddenly he gains the power to make a Wish six times a day as a spell-like ability, with whatever benefits the Metamagic gave him.

Now, I'm not sure what +0 Metamagic feats I'm talking about here, but if they can be applied to Wish, then... damn, just damn.

it does technically sound legit, but insanely, insanely wrong

Spell-Like Ability

An archmage who selects this type of high arcana can use one of her arcane spell slots (other than a slot expended to learn this or any other type of high arcana) to permanently prepare one of her arcane spells as a spell-like ability that can be used twice per day. The archmage does not use any components when casting the spell, although a spell that costs XP to cast still does so and a spell with a costly material component instead costs her 10 times that amount in XP. This ability costs one 5th-level spell slot.

Damn, that a lot of XP to pay per day, or am I missing something?

I think the only response to this is:

"Does Arcane Thesis allow you to drop the adjustment on your meta-magic feats to less then zero?"

And yes, I know it makes no stipulation that you can't, but the PHB human doesn't say he doesn't have 6 arms either.

So, it's either a sin of omission, or quite possiblely one of the most broken things in DnD.

I don't think a 100% satisfactory answer can be made until an errata goes up. :P

It wouldn't work because no DM in possesion of their sanity would alow it. You and I both know it will be errata'd. For what its worth CS has already said it doesn't work that way.

If your argument is that the rules don't say you can't do that, I'd respond with, well the rules don't say you CAN.

custserv, logic, and your dm all say that arcane thesis cannot be used to gain 'negative spell levels' and why arent you incantrix

Some DM's don't allow arcane thesis to reduce the level of spells, but merely allow it to reduce metamagic spells to +0.

Assuming you get permission from your DM, it would work. You would have to hope for a heck of a lot of XP, or have one of those feats that reduces the XP cost...

Yeah, actually now thinking about the experience... It'd probably be better to summon Elemental Monoliths six times a day as a spell like ability for 1k exp each. XD Surely not as effective as Wish, but it gets the job done battle-wise.

Some DMs don't? What DMs do? More importantly, what campaign could survive something like this?

My old DM's campaign. It took the feral AND mineral warrior templates to survive at any level.

That sounds like a campaign I'd like to play in! :D
