| parkse02-13-06, 01:03 PM | Alright, I was reading through my DMG last night, and I think I found something....but I was a bit tired, so I want to pass it by you guys to see if I'm correct. In the back of the DMG, there's a table on how to create Magic Items, and how to calculate their cost and such. There's an entry for +Skill(competence bonus) and the cost is bonus squared times 100gp. Looking at that (unless I'm missing something) I could make a ring that gives +15 to UMD, and it would only cost me like 12k to make, and of course some xp....is this right? What are the RAW about creating something like that? Caster prereq's and such? What's the highest bonus you can get, without it becoming an epic item? Some enlightenment would be appreciated....(think I'm gonna go get more coffee) |
| Disciple02-13-06, 01:09 PM | I think you need to have 15 ranks in UMD (or get help from a character with UMD 15) to create an item with +15 to UMD. Same goes for other skills... |
| parkse02-13-06, 01:14 PM | So you're saying that you have to have the number of ranks in a skill, before you create an item that boosts said skill? Is that conjecture, as in RAI, or RAW? My DM uses RAW only (for the most part) and only if there's nothing RAW, which seems to happen quite a bit, THEN we start looking at RAI and how we see it....thx. |
| Mist of Shadows02-13-06, 01:41 PM | By raw there is nothing that says you have to have the ranks in something it just sort of makes sense. |
| xanadu02-13-06, 01:47 PM | You need the ranks. Boots of striding and springing require 5 ranks in jump. A +15 UMD item seems to be to be in a similar category as a ring of true strike. Possible by the rules but not reflective of the power which comes from the cost. |

There is no written requirement to have ranks in the skill. In fact, there are many counterexamples (Gloves of Swimming and Climbing, Eyes of the Eagle, Cloak of Elvenkind, Elixir of Vision/Sneaking/Hiding etc.). The only thing it says is "Typically, a list of prerequisities includes one feat and one or more spells (or some other requirement in addition to the feat)." However, I think any sensible DM would require powerful prerequisites for a powerful item. |
| Pinky's brain02-13-06, 01:55 PM | By raw there is nothing that says you have to have the ranks in something it just sort of makes sense.Custom magic items are a variant rule, and the table is merely a guideline. By RAW there is nothing which says anything specific about custom magic items period ... allowing players to use table 7-33 is a houserule. It's not a very good houserule either, the table is broken when you use it as is. |
| Elderich02-13-06, 02:00 PM | 15^2*100=22500 You get a 10% discount on item price if the uses has to actualy have a rank in the skill to use it. And the item can only be created up to the skill of a person present for the crafting. So you need to hire someone with +15 to jump and have them present for your creation, IF you do not have a 15 in jump. |
| hogarth02-13-06, 02:01 PM | I would recommend the "Rules of the Game" series from the Wizards web site on making magic items. Especially: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20050118a |
| Mist of Shadows02-13-06, 02:04 PM | The boots mention you needing 5 ranks. But just because you need A for B and c is similiar to B doesn't mean that you need A for C. For example while boots of striding may require 5 ranks(and it's competence bonus just happens to be 5), a cloak of the elvenkind gives a +5 competence bonus to hide checks doesn't require any skill ranks. So just because it's a sensible restriction doesn't mean it's Raw. (I mean there are so many things that work by Raw that are as broken as Humpty Dumpty) Unless you can give me a page number xanadu. As for the epic non epic thing, I believe that is buried some where in the epic book? I want to think it's around 15 to 20 but I can't remember exactly. |
