| Funny Slaughter10-29-03, 07:20 AM | human cleric of bane 7, destruction, tyrrany dreadmaster 10 contemplative1 mysticism warpriest2 this was my idea, leading some troops into combat, flanked by some powerful cohorts. any ideas to improve the build? and i am especially looking for cool cohorts that give some synergy, maybe some auras? (i hope this thread gets some attention even with me bumping all my old ones :) ) gs Funny |
| Morka10-29-03, 09:17 AM | Have your highest level follower be a Marshal (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20030906b). Your cohort should be a monk/blackguard bodyguard, or a buffing arcane spellcaster. For your lower level fighters or warrior, give them a light weapon, large shield and the feat phalanx fighting, so they can create a wall. Give spears to the second line and this line will pierce your ennemy lines. Another high level follower should be a cavalier (or a hasted footman) with a spiked chain, to cause havoc. Alternatively, your cohort might be a sorceror/Marshal/blackguard, to optimize the high charisma. |

This would give the trrops around you bonuses to fighting and such. |
| Funny Slaughter10-29-03, 12:30 PM | if i use DLCS i would go with knight of the skull, but i would say a FRCS-based follower of bane as a knight of neraka is a bit too much even for theory. i think i will add some cohorts, but since you can get special cohorts i was looking for monsters that can advance by class with ease, i am not that fit in this area. gs Funny |

| Jindl11-04-03, 01:15 PM | Cohort : Human Fighter 1 / Lycanthrope Template 2 (afflicted) / Were Direboar 7 / WarHulk 10. Feats - EWP: Spiked Chain, Wolf Lodge Beserker, Improved Trip, Power Attack, Cleave, Combat Reflexesetc... When in were form + drink potion of enlarge + buffed with str items, can easily have a trip +50 or more. Combine trip with mighty swing and then take AoO's when they try to get up! This guy terrorizes groups of weak opponents. (Like PC's). Ultimate thug. Pair him with a marshall follower who has a good cha + aura of Cha to wis skills (to help with spot/listen/control shape). -Jindl |

Or has your DM expanded it at all? If you're going for class levels, you can technically get the most added on to baneguards from that list, but I would probably be more inclined to go with imps or dopplegangers. |
| Funny Slaughter11-04-03, 07:42 PM | bah, lists are for losers :) i think any monster is cool if it somehow fits the borders of the ability (elc or something) i dont think i will play this char anytime soon, but maybe i have to bring him as an villain if i get to DM a but again soon. gs Funny |
| Grim Sage11-05-03, 05:53 AM | Imp Fiend of Possession6/something else x +4 profane bonus on all ability scores, or a +6 equivalent on your weapon, or... or... or... Doppelganger Assassin/whatever those other classes with death attack he is able to enter (nice for covert ops) As for marching into battle, the aforementioned War Hulk, Legendary Tactician and Marshal work nicely. |

| Battousai11-05-03, 07:43 AM | There's that PrC in sword and fist that was basically a war leader...warmaster maybe? Having one chracter with it as your cohort might be cool, especailly if combo-ed with Marshal... and of course since it's a FRCS character you hace access to the War mage of Cormyr. Take an elf so you already have the martial weapon proficiency in a weapon, which is required to enter the PrC. Oh and in Lords of Darkness there's a PrC for wizards that gives a free flying mount and other goodies, it's called the Skymage IIRC |
| Balthanon11-05-03, 09:01 AM | This would be pretty amusing actually. With a Dreadmaster you have 3 cohorts--1 regular, 2 special. That gives you enough characters just on your own to put together the traditional adventuring party to go out and do evil deeds. :) You, of course, will be the cleric of the party and pretty much clearly the strongest of the group. For your regular cohort, a wizard skymage with full caster levels would probably be best. That will maximize the wizard of your group as much as possible. Since the two special cohorts should have an ECL of at least 5 I think and be something that would be associated with Bane (i.e. nonchaotic/nongood and probably lawful/evil), they can then take the position of rogue and fighter. A doppleganger would probably be best as a rogue here, possibly shifting into a dark stalker for the sneak attack dice when fighting (not sure if this would work actually, since Change Shape doesn't say it acts like polymorph). For the fighter/tank position, I would actually consider either a harknin (lycanthropic hell hound) or if you want to be really out of the ordinary, a yak folk (maybe a blackguard) melded with a giant of some kind, possibly a firbolg or troll. The fun thing about this is that even though you can probably take on encounters of your level or a level lower, you gain experience as if you were taking them on alone and your cohorts automatically level with you. :) (You know, going over Body Meld...I think the next time I play an evil character of at least 7th level it's going to be a yak folk. Giants have pitiful will saves. :)) |
| RabidWeasel11-05-03, 09:36 AM | Have one of your cohorts a bard with Leadership  |
| Funny Slaughter11-05-03, 09:54 AM | i dont like the cohort-with-leadership abuse, the dread-pirate-thing or others. the yak-folk sounds really interesting though. and i think if i ever get the opportunity to play an evil character in a solo game this would be my choice. unfortunately most arena-games dont allow cohorts, otherwise this would be a real advantage :) i just wonder why i did never ever see something about the dreadmaster here before, seems like a really powerful class, even in comparison with the stuff in the BoVD :smirk: just too bad that we dont play evil PCs in my group, as a DM its rather pointless to build such a character beside of the roleplaying opportunities since you can just give him as many monsters as you want :) gs Funny |
| Balthanon11-05-03, 10:13 AM | Originally posted by Funny Slaughter human cleric of bane 7, destruction, tyrrany dreadmaster 10 contemplative1 mysticism warpriest2 Just realized something when I started to make my own Dreadmaster party, that if you're playing 3.5, Cleric of Bane 7 no longer qualifies you for Dreadmaster. Since cohorts are at least 2 levels lower than you at all times now, the minimum build for a Dreadmaster requires 8 character levels. Warpriest probably isn't a bad work around here, since it gains you the Domination Domain (and the Spell Focus you need) at first level, but losing a caster level hurts a bit that low. I think I would almost be more inclined to go with Divine Disciple actually. Rally and Inflame just don't seem like they're worth a level of spell casting to me if you can get it some other way. |
| Funny Slaughter11-05-03, 10:31 AM | thats right, too bad. i think its ok to alter the class, otherwise i have to think about a PrC that you can put between cleric5 and 8, the 8th is suboptimal otherwise. gs Funny |
| Battousai11-05-03, 10:55 AM | Disciple of Dispater is a great class for your fighting cohort , I think :D Otherwise Warrior of Darkness in fine too , or parhaps devoted denfender so he can act as your bodyguard |

Bane of Infidels has a lot of synergy with Dreadmaster as far as skills and feats go and it gets sacrifice, which is a nice little ability. You're entering Dreadmaster a level late, but this build can be done with a 10 intelligence and any race technically. If you were human or had a 12 intelligence you could drop a level of Bane of Infidels and enter Dreadmaster at the minimum level of 9, but you would be losing sacrifice. Since you're not getting your special cohorts until level 17 and 18 even with this, I think it's worth pushing back Dreadmaster a level. If you don't like multiclassing that much or for little dips, cleric 8 isn't really a bad break point though, since it's the last level of cleric you can take before you lose another point of base attack. In this build though, I wasn't really too concerned about that beyond meeting prerequisites. |
