| Sci12-14-05, 12:17 PM | Ok, my friend brought up a good idea of late, a drunken master/master thrower, and (I don't know if this has been done a hundred times over but bare with me here) I figure we could throw in a vow of poverty for some serious bonuses...essentially anything the guy picks up becomes a deadly weapon. Here's the idea, and it works with any build that has at least 13 dex, 13 con, and if you want to really benefit from the Vow of Poverty's bonus Exalted Feats, 15 cha. If you want an extra bonus feat, you can go for a human and have that Sacred Vow/Vow of Poverty combination for your first two levels, but it's not 100% necesasary. This is the Human Monk with those prerequisites build I came up with: 1 - Monk (Sacred Vow, Vow of Poverty) 2 - Monk (Nymph's Kiss) 3 - Monk (Dodge) 4 - Monk (Touch of Golden Ice) 5 - Monk 6 - Drunken Master (Great Fortitude, Gift of Faith) 7 - Drunken Master 8 - Drunken Master (Nimbus of Light) 9 - Drunken Master (Point Black Shot) 10 - Drunken Master (Holy Radiance) 11 - Drunken Master 12 - Drunken Master (Precise Shot, Stigmata) 13 - Drunken Master 14 - Drunken Master (Favored of the Companions) 15 - Drunken Master (Weapon Focus - Dagger) 16 - Master Thrower (Vow of Chastity) [Doubletoss Trick] 17 - Master Thrower 18 - Master Thrower (Throw Anything, Vow of Obedience) [Palm Throw Trick] 19 - Master Thrower 20 - Master Thrower (Vow of Purity) [Two With One Blow Trick] In addition to the various benefits of the Exalted Feats that come with VoP, and the various AC bonuses and stat stuff that comes with VoP, Monk Levels, and Drunken Master levels, this particular exatled drunk can pick up a handful of pebbles from the ground and effectively hit 8 seperate enemies in one round, as well as the other hits on a single target from extra BAB hits. Each blow does an approximate of 1d8 + 1d12 + StrMod + 5(exalted). Now, this doesn't even include the regeneration and other VoP stuff, the breath of flame and other Drunken Master stuff, and so on. Not bad, huh? You get a wizard on the team to cast True Strike on the guy, and the world cowers in his path. Any suggestions? |
| Dread Khan12-14-05, 12:26 PM | How on earth do you power your drunken master without booze? Aren't you impoverished? |
| jstorrie12-14-05, 12:44 PM | Yeah, bro, I see an inherent conflict here between wanting to get drunk and wanting to live an ascetic life. VoP is probably not the way to go here. Have you considered somehow mixing Hulking Hurler in instead of Drunken Master, for Really Throw Anything? |
| Dread Khan12-14-05, 01:19 PM | Hukling Hurler wouldn't really fit well with his plan it seems. I assume you'll be throwing Shuriken, or some other monk weapon? Note you need weapon focus with them if you want to use them with master thrower abilities... daggers are not as good, use your flurry and throw like the wind. :P Other comments: Double toss is a standard action, which is why I wouldn't take that trick. Others are better. Palm Throw, Weakspot and possibly Sneakey Shot are a nifty combo for a monk shuriken thrower. Possibly take EWM later and get Close-Quarter Ranged Combat, which is a useful ability for a master thrower using this strategy. |
| AviLazar12-14-05, 01:25 PM | Aww come on, this is easy....just call him a "whino bum" - homeless people have tons of booz and they could easily be called impovershed. My questions is, why touch of golden ice, if you are specializing in throwing stuff? |
| Dread Khan12-14-05, 01:35 PM | homeless bums beg for money or steal, and then buy said booze. :P Thus, they can't have the feat, and can't be good or lawful. |
| rilem12-14-05, 01:46 PM | I assume you'll be throwing Shuriken.... Note that shuriken are also illegal under Vow of Poverty. A dagger would be legal — you get one. Vow of Poverty just doesn't work for this character. At all. |
| AviLazar12-14-05, 01:54 PM | homeless bums beg for money or steal, and then buy said booze. :P Thus, they can't have the feat, and can't be good or lawful. Begging is not an unlawful (generally) or non-good act. Sides, I believe VoP says, somewhere, that VoP characters may have to beg for their food. So, this guys choice of food is alcohol. Alcohol provides carbs which is nourishment :P |
| Sci12-14-05, 02:27 PM | My questions is, why touch of golden ice, if you are specializing in throwing stuff? Because he has TONS of Exalted Feats to burn, and he has to pretty much melee his way with bare hands until he gets to around level 7 anyway, and even then, he only reaches his true throwing potential towards the end. Begging is not an unlawful (generally) or non-good act. Sides, I believe VoP says, somewhere, that VoP characters may have to beg for their food. So, this guys choice of food is alcohol. Alcohol provides carbs which is nourishment :P Couldn't have said it better myself...except for the nourishment thing, by fifth level or so he doesn't need to eat or drink thanks to VoP...but he still ENJOYS it. As for HOW he gets it, I'm not playing this character, my friend Sean is...I just helped him lay it out, it was all his idea as far as character concepts. MY character (a ranger3/fighter2 soon to be occultslayer5/vassalofbahamut10) happens to have a haversack with one pouch filled with various liquors. The plan is to throw him one before battle or if he's injured or whatnot...his reflex is high enough where he can catch it every time. It's a mundane, non-magical drink, so he can use it, just not own it. Hukling Hurler wouldn't really fit well with his plan it seems. Anyway, I did just note the whole "you can only use Master Thrower tricks with the weapon you have 'weapon focus' with" thing. So, here's the question...since Drunken Masters are proficient with ANYTHING they pick up, can you do "Weapon Focus - Improvised Weapons"? Or at least "Weapon Focus - Small Rocks" If so, this pretty much works. Otherwise, eh, 10 monk, 10 drunken master, it'll up the unarmed damage which ups the improvised weapons' damage anyway, even if it's not QUITE as nice. Hulking Hurler just won't work, 'cause he's medium sized, and we can't use level-adjusting characters. I like your weapon trick combos, though, it's nice. |
| MeleeMonster12-15-05, 03:06 PM | Think about using a halfing and going wiht the paragon - every great thrower (outside of hulking hurlers) can be improved by this choice. |
| Dread Khan12-15-05, 11:56 PM | Begging is not an unlawful (generally) or non-good act. Sides, I believe VoP says, somewhere, that VoP characters may have to beg for their food. Alcohol provides carbs which is nourishment :P Begging is illegal in many places (not strictly enforced but its there if someone is a nuisance), and begging for alcohol would not be very successful. :P True, shurken aren't simple weapons. I'm sorry, I can't see this build working out. :S |
| PhoenixInferno12-16-05, 01:08 AM | DRUNKENESS is not Exalted, people. :D Indulgence is a sin. |
