Howdy all,

This maybe a post best for the BOED page but I thought it had great min/max potential. Unless there is errata this feat does not seem to require the normal caster level or spell requirements to produce an item. In addition any good character can acquire the feat and it does not reguire the expenditure of xp. Now where I think this has the most potential is charged based items, specifically tomes and manuals of stat gains. The description for these books state that they become normal books once read, effectively dropping their gp value to that of a master work book. So what does everyone think about enchanting the book, reading, and again enchanting with a different state bonus? The book's value will never excede your level max and the usualy xp component of making these items are prohibitory. Now of course the usual time constrants with making magic items is in place, but it would give the rest of the party something to do while the wizard or cleric was at work. Plus as stated right in the text of the feat, you can sac items you cannot use and get full value. If you every get maxed out on inherent bonuses you can always enchant as a non-slotted item. Even a luck dagger for a rogue would be a neat use of this feat.

So what do you think of using the feat in this way, does it seem within the rules?

Thanks for reading my long winded ideas.

Uh-huh, only you have to sacrifice items of a gp value equal to the market price of the item anyway (you could just buy the thing, if you have that much), and it requires a consecrated or hallowed location. Additionally, it's the value of what the relic will become, not the value of what it already is- you couldn't make a Manual or Tome +5 until 17th level, its normal caster level anyway.

It is an interesting idea, though. To be honest, I'd never really thought about slot-variant wondrous items. Technically, you could have a masterwork belt that used to belong to your grandfather and start putting enhancement bonuses on it for every stat, then maybe including a monk's belt-type effect, etc.

You can't use it to make Wonderous Items anyway, can you? I think it is more restricted to ONE weapon or armor.

Nope, pulled out my BoED to check. One 'magic item.'

It does not say in the description that it has to be a weapon or armor.

I understand that you will have to be level 17 to make a +5, but you could still make lesser books starting at level 11. You would not have that much money anyway until then. The main thing is that you can sac equipment valued at that price. That can be a big plus in campaigns where you dont get 200k gp in coinage, but get items (not too many campaigns i played in that got full resale). If you figure you get double value from saced equipment compared to selling it, it is just like crafting without the xp price (which for tomes is alot). Also it indirectly gives you the ability to destroy magic items.

Although I agree with you that it is not the best if you are in a campaign that can just go out and buy anything. As usual it is campaign dependent. Hey in my campaign inheret stat books stack up to a max of +5 so those +1 books look good.

A question, what item could you make that is 380,000k at level 20 that would not be epic? I guess if you tacked on enough intellegent item properties.

Edit

It says "No character may have more than one ancestral relic." You never have more than one, and it is always the same item (heirloom). Also the items value never goes over the max listed for character level because once you read it, its just a normal book for price.

Perhaps combining some effects into one item. Say a tome the boosts both int and cha by +5 each?

Cool idea by the way.

Well... when I was done with all the magical booster books, I'd probably turn it into an intelligent book with an Ego score of "Dear Eris, it ate the Paladin!", a chaotic good alignment, floating (as per ioun stone), and, oh, I dunno, a permanent Radiant Shield, Mind Blank, and... eh, Substituted (electricity) Admixtured (sonic) Flame Strike 5/day (as a 20th-level Cleric).

Well, since we have Monk's Tatoos, and variouse other magical tatoo effects out there in the D&D world, could one target a tatoo with ancestral relic? It says it can be something bewtowed upon the character by a religous organization, if i remember correct. So if your church gives you some cool tatoo of, um, coolitivity, could you make it an uber tatoo of power?
