I've got to convert a character concept from 2nd edition to 3.5 edition. He was a Fighter, but through role-playing and creative 'application' of some proficiencies, I turned him into an effective policeman and bounty hunter. He had a quirk, that he "Always" brought his quarry back alive. Looking at the options for a conversion of a Fighter from 2e to 3.5, neither me or my DM was satisfied with what the character would become, so he gave me carte-blanche to create a new character at 10th level. I'm a bit at a loss with all the options availiable, and my friends say that this is the best place to come for this sort of advice. So I submit to you gentlemen a challenge, to build the most effective level 10 bounty hunter possible.

My limitations are the use of core 3.5 edition books, Forgotten Realms, race human, alignment lawful non-evil, 28 point stat buy.

If any more information is needed, please let me know.

Thanks!

Deffinately Justicar from Complete Warrior. I mean, heck, they have an ability called Bring 'Em Back Alive. :P

Ranger 2/Fighter 4/Justicar 4 . Simple, effective, and to the point.

feats:
1 Jotunbrud (races of faerun), Skill Focus (Gather Info), Track
2 Combat Style feat
3 Fighter Bonus feat, feat
4 Fighter Bonus feat
6 Fighter bonus feat, feat
9 feat

And you'll end up with good saves. Plenty of feats to chose from, you didnt say what type of weaposn you wanted him using, etc. Personally, I'd be inclined to go Spiked Chain and take the Mage Slayer chain of feats from Complete Arcane, allowing you easier time to bring back wizards and clerics alive, 'cause otherwise it'd just be a pain in the rear.

You'll have enough skill points to buy crossclass skills in Gather Information. And, if need be, Spellcraft.

I agree with the above, though I'd drop 2 fighter levels for 2 more ranger levels, or 3 rogue levels and get justicar one level later. Just my preference though.

If you'd notice, he doesn't have access to the compltete books, so those builds don't work.

I'm sorry, I do have access to the "complete" series of books, through my GM and other players. Sorry I forgot to mention it (they weren't on my shelf, hehe).

If I go ranger for the combat style, won't I be restricted to light armor? Should I go weapon/shield to counteract that? I haven't seen any weapon/shield builds I'd be able to make good in 4 levels of Fighter. Any ideas?

The Justicar seems to be a grappling type (the hogtie ability requires grappling, right?) Jotunbrud looks like it's a big help with grappling... Would a level or two of Monk be worthwhile? What's the best way to work that in?

Some great ideas so far, I've got a stack of papers working through builds now :)

Justicar gets Improved Grapple as a bonus feat. Monk synergizes okay with him, but if I were sacrificing BAB and stunting my entry into Justicar a level I think I'd lean more towards Rogue instead of Monk. Rogue 3/Fighter 4/Justicar 3. This will allow much easier entry into the PrC with skills and allow for plenty left over.

You shouldn't have a problem grappling Medium sized foes with +17+str on your grapple checks.

As for weapons, I'd still suggest Spiked Chain. With one of your other floating free feats, check out Imp. Buckler Defense from CW. Or there's a feat that lets sneak attack be subdual, but I forget where it's from... :thinks:

Does the Rogue sneak attack stack with the Justicar subdual bonus damage?

I would say yes. Though it doesn't specifically say in the description it would only make sense. Afterall, it is known that you can use sneak attack damage with subdual strikes (IE, the Sap). The Sap will be your friend...you may want to grab the BoED and look at the Truncheon. It's like a sap but, it's the size of a sack of potatos.

I disagree. I believe that u should keep it the way that it is, because when u are at 4th lvl in Fighter u can get Weapon Specialization (which is good). On the other hand, lvl 4 Ranger gets Animal Campanion, which would just get in ur way. I say 2 Ranger/ 4 fighter/ 10 Justicar

OK, here's a question (sorry to partially derail this thread...)

What's better?

Justicar, Bloodhound, or Thayan Slaver? All of them can be good at subdueing their enemies... A Note by the way, Bloodhound is one of the few PrC's that you can enter after level 4, so I consider it a plus. Good skill points, too.

I'd say it purely depends on flavor. Bloodhound seems more of the Ranger (the most obvious entry is Ranger 4) type who follows you halfway through a forest and comes out of the darkness to silently beat you into a pulp, while Justicar is more urban and upfront (and lawful). The Thayan slaver is... uhm... evil. And from Thay.

I'd say a mix of Justicar and Bloodhound would be best.

Ranger 3rd / Fighter 1st / Bloodhound 8th / Justicar 8th

Edit: I just noticed that you can't get into Bloodhound at 5th level, as it takes 4 ranks of Gather Information which is a cross-class skill for Rangers.

It would be really nice if you can finagle a way to do it tho because the 8th level abilities of both classes are very nice.

If you can't, then Ranger 3rd / Rogue 2nd / Bloodhound 10th / Justicar 5th would be the way to go. For 10 levels use Ranger 3rd / Rogue 2nd / Bloodhound 2nd / Justicar 3rd

Justicar is fricken' awesome. Get in as fast as possible, raid it for Hogtie, and get on with your character.

Isn't there a feat in Races of Destiny that allows a human to take one skill as a permanent class skill?

Just a thought...

That feat is in Unearthed Arcana not RoD.

Justiciar all the way. Bloodhound has a severe drawback...the whole 'mark' system. This only allows you to truly hunt a few people at a time while the Justiciar just trots up to whomever he pleases, slaps some manacles on them (which he wields as a FLAIL!!! haha) and hauls their criminal asses to prison...I much prefer the Justiciar.
