"Dark Speech" Feat for BoVD Artificer? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-15-05, 09:08 PM Just an idea that I'd like to get some feedback on.

The Dark Speech feat, when used to aid the creation of an evil magic item, bumps the CL of the item up by one for free. And... since any magic item created with the aid of Dark Craft rewards is evil, that pretty much means any item you create.

When crafting, you get the +2 CL bonus from the artificer and the +1 from Dark Speech to determine level of stuff you can make.

After you've created the items, they still get the +1 CL from the feat.
This in conjunction with Wand Mastery gives your wands a +3 CL.
All your other magic items get the +1 CL.

So, is it worth it? It would seem like it to me.

A good character, however, cannot engineer the death of a small city as a sacrifice to the dark powers in return for a big bag of Dark Craft Points. Well, not really.

03-16-05, 03:21 AM Every Vile Artificer should totally take Education. Knowledge: Religion never paid off so well. Get yourself a nice skill boosting item (and add an infusion on top of that, and Divine insight) and you'll be sacrificing better than your cleric. Ur Priest has nothing on you. Darkcraft XP + Artificer scares me, alot. You can either launder the XP out (retain essence, and make new stuff, which isn't tainted by evil) or just have a shotload of wands, to run through like a madman. And you can make your own holy avenger, and carry it around everywhere you go. Just for spite.

03-16-05, 09:21 PM Yup, I see the power of Dark Craft, I'm just trying to see what the consensus is regarding Dark Speech.

Since it boosts everything you craft by 1 CL, that's a bit of extra 'oomph' in your scrolls, potions and wands. It should also mean that you can craft items one level earlier, since you're able to meet the CL requirement one level earlier.

So... is it worth it?

03-17-05, 12:27 AM Actually, I don't think it bumps up how soon you can make a Scroll of Fireball. It would add a caster level, sure. Which is all good. Especially when it's free. Discount wands! Whee!

But the Artificer ability to make items is pretty specifically worded. All the +CL in the world won't help you out there. As you don't /have/ a CL. You just fake one.
