| Wizu04-15-04, 12:08 PM | That was the shout of partys rogue as he scouted the area and found this... thing, that was to be their next partymember, born from the minds of various minmaxers and illustrated by a cute japanese girl. Ohkay. The campaing uses UA LA buyoff thingy. Im thinking half ogre (savage species one) feral (I convinced that half-ogre is a monstrous humanoid who has "giant blood" because of his ancerstry, not because his type is giant) mineral warrior (dont-even-ask) shadow dragonspawn (same as the white spawny, tho breat weapon and immunities are different)! This is to be the main tank in 3.5 campaing, using elite array for stats (my group loves elite array) and pretty much anything official (no magazines tho) is good to go, as long as it is 3.5 compatible (subject to dms approval) Starting level is 8. From there I'm going to start bying the LA off straight away, I know it will hurt me for a while but 3.5 experience system is magnificient, I wont lose nothing compared to the raw power I get in few levels. Abilities are tricky part, seems that spellcasting isnt possible afterall without magical items. Pity in a way. I was thinking to allocate them like 15 13 14 12 10 8, but im taking suggestions, I really am. Okay, now imagine you have 20 levels to toy with a character like this without any LA whatsoever. I am here asking for the most "oomph" I can get from this little beast of mine. It is almost impossible to make him anything else than a reach specialist, with trippin capabilities. Possibly even fitting in the wolf berserker and then adding knowckdown, along with a chain he could really keep them down. Well... dexterity will be low, perhaps not even worth the trouble if I seek for AOOs. Spinning halberd type? Nah, dexterity requirements for two weapon fighting... Yep, Im taking those little fruity suggestions, things that tell me how to make my DM cry and regret the day wizards published anything in their website. |

| Lamebraise04-15-04, 01:39 PM | I don't have the books necessary to determine the total LA of this but, by the looks of it, it is around 4 or 5, which means you won't be able to start buying it off until level 12 (assuming LA+4). And that will be the only time you'll be able to do that until epic level ! This is how i understood the way it worked, since UA doesn't say much wether you should buy off each of multiple templates seperately or take the sum of their LA at once. As the book speaks of "the character's level adjustment" and not the template's, this is how i interpret the rule, but i might have missed something. |
| Wizu04-15-04, 02:02 PM | Or then I have misunderstood it and my grand plan gets thwarted by puny optional rules. I curse you Unearthed Arcana! Well... Okay... Let me see... if they count as a +4 LA when determining how I can buy them off, I should ditch the plan altogether. If they count as separate sources, thus being only +1 LA each, I remember thinking that it would work. Tho that was early in the morning and our group hadnt had sleep, and I was :banghead: because my previous character just died. I really liked the picture. |
| Lamebraise04-15-04, 02:34 PM | The dm woulda killed it soon anyway. With 4 HD at level 8, he won't give you enough time to catch up to the other player's level. Plus your sig says you don't powergame. Might as well not, then ;). |
| Stoned Golem04-15-04, 04:09 PM | That would've been quite a sight with the -8 Int penalty though. It would have been worth it just to see the picture of a hulking, devolved, stony, shadowy beast...in diapers. :D |
| Myric04-15-04, 04:13 PM | You're goin about it all wrong ... I think that the LA buyoff system is completely broken (but thats a rant for another day, another thread), but here's how to take maximum advantage. Start off as a Feral Halfogre (LA+2), then at ECL 8, buyoff, then again at ECL10. Now you're LA+0 with 9 Class levels; now take the aquired template, Mineral Warrior, now your eligable for another buyoff at ECL 13 (12 Class levels). Now get the aquired template (Dragonspawn) and buy off again at ECL 16. w00t! w00t! Depending on interpretation, you may not have to wait at all. "Once the total of a character's class levels ..." (UA, pg 18;Reducing Level Adjustments, paragraph 2) seems to imply that with 9 class levels, the aquired LA+1 template can be bought off immediately. The paragraph about "gaining additional class levels" begins with "IF the level adjustment is greater than +1" doesn't apply to you at that point. |

| catharz04-16-04, 04:01 AM | Or you could just play a Feral Half-minotaur Dwarf instead. |
