| chubbell05-04-05, 04:27 PM | Hi. This may not be the place to ask this question, but here goes. For the Guildmage of Waterdeep and the Mage of the Arcane Order prestige classes in the Magic of Faerun and Complete Arcane books respectively a mage gets access to a spellpool as a class ability. This allows the mage to have an "banking account" with the guild/order and use the concept of spell currency described in the Magic of Faerun and Complete Arcane books depending on if the mage takes spells from the spellpool (acquiring a debt) or puts spells into the spellpool (acquiring a credit). Every night before a mage renews his spells he could put his remaining spell levels into his guild's/order's spellpool and gain additional spell currency. My question is this. How would you use "spell currency" in a game; particularly assigning a gp value to it, so it makes it easier to buy items which have a gp value assigned to them in the PHB, DMG, etc?? Could you use the same gp value of a spell scroll of the same spell level put into the spellpool?? I am starting as a Wizard 5/Guildmage 3 in a FR campaign. A starting level 8 character gets 27,000 gp in equipment, magic items, etc and wanted to use spell currency to purchase additional equipment; either for the character or his teammates. |

For the Mage of the Arcane Order in 3.5 you can no longer build a positive balance that was only with the 3.0 MotAO from Tome and Blood. Complete Arcane, page 49, bottom most right hand corner, last sentence "A mage can't run a 'positive balance' with the Spellpool, paying off a debt before incurring it." |

| chubbell05-05-05, 01:56 PM | What about collaborating with your fellow guildmages to create magic items and using spell currency to pay the debt?? For example a Guildmage hires on as head wizard for a ship's crew. The ship's captain and crew(total of 50 people) will be hunting pirates as its main activity, so the head wizard wants to get each member of the crew a magic item which gives mage armor and shield spells 2/day who wants one since the crew will be in combat a lot. Now this will be very expensive and time consuming, so I wanted to use the concept of spell currency to cover this cost. Would this be allowed?? |
